3 Rivers Outdoor Co. is humbled to bring adventure racing back to Western Pennsylvania.

The 3ROC Pay-What-You-Want Adventure Race is a semi-urban adventure race featuring two divisions—a 6-hour and a 12-hour option—where teams of up to four athletes will bike, trek, and paddle through Pittsburgh’s iconic neighborhoods, river corridors, staircases, and parklands, collecting as many checkpoints as possible before time runs out. Few cities are better suited for this challenge: Pittsburgh is home to more than 3,800 acres of public land across 176 city parks, stitched together by rivers, ridge lines, wooded ravines, and hidden corridors that reward smart navigation and bold route choices.

This race offers challenging navigation, rewarding checkpoints, meaningful strategy and route choice, and a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere. The course is designed to be competitive for experienced teams while remaining accessible to newer racers ready to push themselves and learn the sport.

The course is built with teams of all abilities in mind using a modified rogaine format. All teams must complete a designated mandatory route that requires less advanced navigation and is short enough that teams with solid baseline fitness should be able to finish within the time limit. More experienced teams can seek out additional, optional checkpoints designed to challenge the strongest competitors and sharpest navigators.

Because cost should never be a barrier to adventure, the 3ROC Adventure Race team has adopted a Pay-What-You-Want entry model. Aside from any platform processing fees, we are committed to covering the remaining costs of putting on the race—including permits, insurance, boats, and logistics—so that everyone who wants to race has the opportunity to do so. Use the Donation option to pay what you want, if you want.

    WHAT IS ADVENTURE RACING?

Adventure racing is a multi-sport, navigation-based team sport where teams race across varied terrain to visit checkpoints within a set time limit. Instead of a fixed course like a triathlon, the course isn’t revealed until race day, and teams choose their own routes between checkpoints on foot, by bike, and often by paddle.

Teams of up to 4 racers stay together throughout the race (it’s not a relay).

Navigation is central: teams use map and (sometimes) compass skills to find checkpoints, making strategy and teamwork as important as fitness.

In short, adventure racing is like a scavenger hunt with a clock—a test of endurance, teamwork, strategy, and navigation across changing terrain.

    ADVENTURE RACING FAQs

Is this like Tough Mudder or Spartan?

No. Adventure racing has no man-made obstacles. Teams navigate natural terrain using a map and compass, choosing their own routes between checkpoints.

Do I need to be in great shape?

No. While elite races can be very long, many adventure races are beginner-friendly and last just a few hours. They’re designed for a wide range of abilities.

    Do I need expensive gear?

No. Many races include boats or offer rentals, and some courses reduce gear requirements to make entry easier for first-timers.

Do I need to be an expert navigator?

No. Beginner courses use shorter legs and obvious checkpoints. Most racers learn navigation by doing.

    What should first-timers know?

Adventure racing is a team-based, navigation-focused outdoor challenge. If you like teamwork, problem-solving, and being outside, you’re ready to race.

Adventure belongs to everyone. We’ll see you at the start line.

    • Final race-day instructions will be emailed prior to the event

A few reasons our runners love Rise Up Hero:

🦸‍♂️ Be The Hero You Were Meant to Be Bracelet

Every participant receives a Be The Hero bracelet — a powerful reminder that we all have a hero version inside of us and the people that matter the most want us to find it. Your kids. Your partner. Your parents. Your coworkers. Your friends. You don’t just do hard things for yourself… you do hard things to show others what’s possible.

    💛 Rilyn’s Way

Along the course, you’ll pass Rilyn’s Way — a meaningful tribute and reminder to slow down, reflect, and remember what truly matters. It’s a space that represents love, courage, and living fully for the people who mean the most to us. Many runners say it becomes one of the most powerful moments of the entire race.

    👕 Runner-Favorite Shirts

Our shirts are the ones people actually wear — soft, athletic fit, and designed with purpose. Not the “bottom drawer” race tee. These become trail staples and everyday reminders of the hero you chose to be.

    🏅 Custom Finisher Medals

Earn it. Every distance. Every mile. Every climb. A medal that represents grit, growth, and the version of you that chose courage over comfort.

    🥇 Age Group Awards

We celebrate effort at every level. Top finishers in each age group will be recognized — because showing up and pushing your limits deserves to be honored, whether you’re chasing a podium or chasing personal growth. Age group awards are for the 8mile, 25K and 50K distances.

    📣 Great for Spectators

With our unique course design, family and friends have multiple easy viewing points — especially for the 25K and 50K distances. Your crew won’t just see you at the finish… they’ll be able to cheer you on throughout your journey. And trust us — hearing your name mid-race hits different.

    🌲 Well-Marked Trail Course

Confidence in the woods. Our course is clearly marked so you can focus on effort, not direction. Just run, climb, dig deep, and discover what you’re made of.

    🍌 Awesome Aid Stations

Fully stocked. High energy. Smiling volunteers who want to see you win. Fuel up, reset, and get back after it.

🔥 Established Ultra — With Options for Everyone

Chase the coveted Axe in the ultra distances… or step into your first big challenge with our 5K or 8 Mile (hikers welcome!). Same powerful atmosphere. Same meaningful experience. Different levels of hero.

    ⏳ Always Sells Out

This isn’t just another race on the calendar. It’s an experience people come back for year after year. When spots open, they go fast.

    ...our community lost ours.

In 2009, our connection to our park was exploded. And we've felt (and seen) this yawning chasm in our hearts ever since.

But after 16 years of hard work begging, complaining, and cajoling, in 2025 our li'l bridgey was reborn!

Come join us on a run (or walk) into Riverview Park via what many are calling the "Wonder of Brighton Heights" and "neat": the new Davis Avenue Bridge (LI'L BRIDGEY)! The event is May 30th, 2026 and begins at the Davis side of li'l bridgey, heads into Riverview park, around the Allegheny observatory and back down to finish where it started.

Dirty Dozen is a unique cycling challenge. What makes this unique, you ask? This is a multi hillclimb event of some of the steepest hills in the country with neutral disposition between hill segments, a rolling start into the hill, and a roadrace style finish for points.( if you are competing). Whether you are a newbie or a seasoned competitor, this ride can put you to the test. Some basic ride details and rules follow. Additional information can be found at the main event web page: http://www.dannychew.com/ddinfo.html

Route: Strava Route This link is good for training purposes in small groups. It may be updated at the last minute to account for road construction. It has all the hills, but it may not be the course followed by every ride leader. Competition heats in particular will follow different routes to Canton and Boustead.

Number Pickup: This year you can pick up your number and possibly some swag at Biketek in Squirrel Hill an Forbes Ave from 5 pm to 7pm on Friday October 23rd. It will be warm and dry. By doing this you can avoid the cold line at the park in the morning.

    Number Pickup link ( old)

If you elect to wait until Saturday morning the number pickup and Registration will open for 1 hour starting at 8am. Bikereg will be live until the start. No cash.

Start Location: This year’s start is located at the Rhododendron Pavilion in Highland Park. This is on Lake Dr near the lake.

Parking: There is plenty of parking on either side of the street along Lake and Reservoir Dr. Please be respectful of the Dog Park and leave space in front for other patrons.

Safety: Remember—safety first. You will be on open roads with vehicle traffic. Always be alert for road hazards and traffic. When riding in a pack remember that you are among cyclists of all different abilities. Follow instructions given by ride leaders and marshals in your group.

Weather: This is Pittsburgh. Although the October event should prevent a whole day of snow or freezing rain, it is still known to be wet and chilly at this time of year. Dress in layers with a waterproof layer on top if necessary. Remember to overlap the waterproof layers so that water does not flow into your clothes...think roof shingles.

You are responsible for determining when the weather has gotten the best of you. Have an escape plan if things get unsafe for you or others. I do not think there are 400 Ubers in Pittsburgh.

Your numbers: For non-competitors, a helmet sticker will be provided. Competitors also receive frame, bar numbers, or saddle numbers (TBD). The helmet number is to be mounted on the front, center of your helmet, just above the brim. The frame number is to be mounted towards the front of your bike’s top tube where it is clearly visible from either side. These will be needed for identification throughout the ride, and are essential for participation in the points competition.

Heats: This year there may be as many as 9 heats including a separate heat for the women's competition and a handcycle heat. Come to the Start line 5 minutes before your start time.

    Heat 1: Open Competition (9:00am)

    Handcycles. (9:00am)

    Heat 2: Licensed ( 9:10)

    Heat 3: Club Heat (9:15)

    Heat 4: Women's & Nonbinary Competitive (separate) (9:20)

Heat 5: DD Fan Club (9:25)

    Heat 6: Rouleur (9:30)

    Heat 7/8: Party Bus (9:40)

Food stops and restrooms: Food stops and portable restrooms are at Millvale Riverfront Park, on River Front Drive in Millvale, and at after Boustead at the Pauline St Park. The Cobden Street Block Watch and the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association will provide some refreshments at the top of Eleanor Street, the 12th hill.

Being an official finisher: You must successfully ride every hill in the event to be an official finisher. Successfully riding a hill means that you make continuous uphill progress to the top under your own power, and the only contact points with the ground are the two wheels; falling down, putting a foot down, grabbing poles or other stationary objects, jockeying in place, etc. are disqualifying, and the hill must be restarted from the bottom if any of these occur. “Finisher” ribbons will be awarded to riders certifying they successfully rode every hill. To receive one, ypu will need to follow the provided route to the Awards Ceremony location ( East End Brewery)

Points competition: To remain eligible for a placing in the points competition, riders must be official finishers as described above and finish the final hill within 20 minutes of the first finisher of that hill. The pace between the hills is neutral and riders must stay together. When approaching the start of a hill, riders must stay even with or behind the riding official who signals hill starts. This is a rolling start. We do not stop at thebottom, or time your results. The official blows a whistle at the beginning of each contested hill at their discretion as they approach the bottom of the hill. Only then may riders go as hard as they want to the top in an attempt to score points. The first ten competitors in each competative heat on each hill receive points in their respective competitions.

After Party and Awards Ceremony will (Likely) be held at East End Brewing Company on Julius St in Larimer.

The GPS route ,linked above Will directing you back to Highland Park will lead you past the awards ceremony location.

The Final letter sent the day before the event will have all the latest information such as route, rest stops, schedule, locations, in case they change.

🪑 The Empty Chair (Dads Chair) & 💙 Rilyn’s Way

The Empty Chair along the course symbolizes those we’ve lost — a reminder that they’re always with us on the trail.

    💙 Remembering Rilyn — “Rilyn’s Way”

Rilyn Nicole Hughes was a beautiful 7-year-old girl who lived just a few miles from the race course. After a courageous five-and-a-half-year battle with Neuroblastoma, Rilyn passed away surrounded by those who loved her dearly.

Before she passed, we committed to honoring her by naming the final half-mile of every race:

    “Rilyn’s Way”

You’ll see a sign at the ½-mile-to-go mark. Pause if you’d like. Take a photo. Draw strength from Rilyn’s spirit as you finish your race.

    🕊️ Special Dedication

The Harry J. Shipley Memorial Run

Last Trail Standing is dedicated to Harry J. Shipley, father of race director Chad Shipley, whose birthday is November 17.

Harry loved old country roads — always wondering where they led. That same curiosity guided the creation of this race: chasing every trail, connecting every path, and seeing where it all goes.

“The Last Trail Standing isn’t about speed — it’s about exploration. And the only way to conquer it is to show up and run.”

    — Chad Shipley

    🌲 One Last Note

The full course map will not be released in advance (same course as 2025). This is intentional. We want the experience to unfold as a true adventure.

    What we can promise:

    99% wooded trails

Every trail in Settlers Cabin Park

    An experience you won’t forget

Ready to conquer every trail at Settlers?

We’ll see you at the start line on November 14.

    Kids of STEEL

Kids of STEEL is P3R’s free training program that helps motivate kids and their families to get moving. The program is unique – an official race provides a tangible goal for kids to work toward – and is currently available in more than 350 schools and community organizations in western Pennsylvania.

As part of this award-winning program, kids complete at least 25 training miles with their team in preparation for a family-friendly P3R event. Then they get to celebrate their hard work and join Pittsburgh’s dynamic running community.

    • This Kids of STEEL Program registration is for participation at your site's practices. To register for the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, you must complete a separate registration here. (Registration opens in August)
