This is an old school, classic single loop backcountry race. The name is from an on course incident with a rattlesnake. You have to be tough for this 24 mile back country loop in the heart of
Dankness…Canaan. This is a fundraiser for Blackwater Bicycle Association. It starts in Davis on River Road Trail to Yellow Birch and then climbs up a virtual creek bed, The Davis Trail (Allegheny Trail) to Plantation Trail . You'll make a right onto Plantation Trail and then a left onto Fire Trail #6 Trail. Make a left onto Canaan Loop Road (Forest Road 13) and enjoy several miles on the gravel to Fire Trail 3. A water station will be there. Descend Fire Trail 3 to Plantation. Take a left onto Plantation back to Davis Trail (Allegheny Trail). Make a right on Davis to descend what you climbed earlier to Blackwater Falls State Park and do Yellow Birch(again) and the River Road Trail back into Davis to the full aid station. If you are a DUO Team, this is where you will tag your partner for the next
leg. After fueling up, you'll tackle the rock tech of Splashdam Trail and will start to feel the hard, slow miles. No rest for the weary as you then climb Hoodoo and descend the Moon Rocks searching for that sweet locals line. Hammer back on Trials Trail. Wet lube and extra chamois cream are recommended! Registration opens at 8:30 at Davis City Park Pavillion. Racers meeting is at 9:45 at Start. The Start of the race is at 10am at the beginning of the River Road Trail(South side of Rt 32 Bridge/Also Aid Station) Finish is at Camp 70 Trailhead. Post race meal by the fabulous SIRIANNI'S Pizza and FREE t-shirt are included in the race entry at the DAVIS CITY PARK

In the spirit of historic advances and competition between ever-evolving modes of transportation, the 3M Challenge (Muscle vs. Machine vs. Mountain) will be held on September 26, 2026. It will
feature a timed challenge between two of Mountain Maryland's oldest mechanized modes of transportation, the WMSR 1309 Steam locomotive, the largest operating steam locomotive of its type in the world, and the legs of cyclists. The event will highlight the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR), the towns of Cumberland, MD, and Frostburg, MD, the scenic beauty of Allegany County, and the healthy outdoor lifestyle.
The Route
The Great Allegheny Passage between Cumberland and Frostburg is the only location in the country with 15.6 miles of side-by-side bike trails and scenic trains. The 3M Challenge will be a timed ride from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) Station in Cumberland, MD, to the western end of the train platform at the Frostburg, MD, Depot.
• Individuals and teams (up to 6 riders) will depart Cumberland every 5 minutes, beginning as early as 9:00 AM, from the water spout on the Scenic Railway train platform at the train station at Canal Place.
The route is on Ride with GPS. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38734043
• Ebikes - are NOT included in this event
Rider Information
• A team can have 2 to 6 riders. In the spirit of historic advances and competition between ever-evolving modes of transportation, the 3M Challenge (Muscle vs. Machine vs. Mountain) will take place on September 26, 2026.
• All competitive challenger bicycles must be 100% human (rider) powered. There are no "e-bikes" in the competitive "Individual Rider" and "Team" categories.
• Each team must donate a minimum of $250 to MMT. The donation per individual rider is $60.
About the Challenge
The challenge is to have a better climb time than the WMSR 1309 Steam Engine. Over 40 % of the riders beat the train in 2025
Individuals who beat the locomotive's climb time will receive recognition.
All participants will receive a participation Great Allegheny Passage 3M Race Shirt. Please ensure that you fill out the form to specify your shirt size requirements. We will try accommodating all who enter, but shirt availability is not guaranteed.
Purpose of the Event
Mountain Maryland Trails is a volunteer organization that collaborates with the Allegany County Government, the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy, partner organizations, and community volunteers to manage the Maryland section of the Great Allegheny Passage trail. The efforts of the board and volunteers focus on maintaining a network of trails that promotes wellness, sustainable economic development, environmental stewardship, and connection to cultural heritage.
For over 30 years, the organization has played a vital role in developing the Great Allegheny Passage trail and implementing various trail improvement and safety projects, including the recently completed Borden Tunnel Lighting Project. What began as a project to reclaim a defunct rail line between Cumberland, MD, and Pittsburgh, PA, has evolved into a trail that welcomes 1.5 million visitors annually, generates approximately $800,000 in economic impact per mile of trail each year, and supports 1,393 jobs with a total labor income of $52.6 million.
Furthermore, the event promotes the Great Allegheny Passage Trail, which attracts tourists from around the world while also being a beloved spot for the local community.

It’s no secret that we adore Rocky Gap State Park and it absolutely has a special place in our hearts and the hearts of thousands of EX2 racers. We’ve been hosting races in the park since 2004, and
three years we introduced this brand new ultra distance trail running event. We are thrilled to bring back the Rocky Gap 25K, 50K, and Relay Trail Running Race for year four! We hope you join us for an awesome adventure in the mountains of western Maryland.
Race Date: Sunday October 11, 2026
Start Time: 8:30am (50K), 9:00am (25K)
Location: Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, MD
Course Length: 25K (~16ish miles) and 50K (~32ish miles)
Course Format: 3 different loops. 25K does each loop once, while the 50K does each loop twice
Entry types: Solo runners and relay teams of 2 or 3 in both the 25K and 50K
The race highlights three different beautiful loops in the park that vary in length between 4.4 miles and 6.5 miles. We are calling these loops simply Loop A, Loop B, and Loop C. The 25K race does each loop once in order (A, B, C) with a total elevation change of about 1,300 feet. The 50K race does each loop twice in order (A, B, C…then A, B, C again) with a total elevation change of about 2,600 feet.
Loop A – Rocky Trail
Loop A is 6.5 miles with 500+ feet of elevation change and some moderate singletrack sections. The route follows the Lakeside Loop Trail for approximately 1.4 miles until it takes a left turn up a trail that we affectionately call Evitt’s Revenge (it’s steep). After a really fantastic .2 mile climb, the route takes a right onto Rocky Trail where it continues to climb until about mile 2.7. After topping out, the route heads downhill via the Setters Path trail and the Hickory Loop in the campground to the Lakeside Loop Trail. The route then follows the Lakeside Loop around the lake back to the staging area.
Loop B – Canyon Overlook
Loop B is 4.4 miles with about 500 feet of elevation change and highlights some lesser known singletrack in the park. The route follows the Lakeside Loop Trail for approximately 1 mile until it reaches the dam road and then continues straight across the road and up a steep (but short) section of trail to the ridge above the gorge. The route then traverses above the gorge to the left to the Canyon Overlook Trail and then returns back to the dam road to Old Hancock Road. The route then takes a right on Old Hancock Road (doubletrack) and then a left on an awesome 1.5 mile trail that leads back to Lake View Drive. The route then follows the Lake View Drive back to the staging area.
Loop C – Lakeside Loop
Loop C is 5.2 with about 250 feet of elevation change and follows the complete Lakeside Loop Trail. The route is amazingly beautiful with water views most of the way around.
In terms of anticipated difficultly, Loop A is the hardest followed by Loop B. Loop C is the easiest of the three loops since it is generally flat around the lake.
Course maps, elevation profiles, etc. are on the race website.
