The Spring Backyard Burn (SBYB) is a series of 5 and 10 mile trail running races held on some of the best trail networks in the Northern Virginia Area. All the courses include a mixture of forested fire roads, twisty hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement.

All race information can be found on the race website.

Located just south of the Capital Beltway in Lorton, this beautiful race course includes a mixture of forested and open meadow singletrack meandering through 1600 acres of the former prison grounds. The race starts and ends under the old guard towers at the Workhouse Arts Center, which is the site of the former Lorton Reformatory. The course is one of our least technical and most of it is on singletrack that is a mix of dirt and crushed stone. The only short pavement sections are at the beginning and end of the race. There are no extended climbs, but lots of short ups and downs.

Situated on Gunston Cove and adjacent to Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and Gunston Hall, home of Founding Father George Mason, Pohick Bay is steeped in beauty and history. The trails are excellent, the water views are amazing, and bald eagle sightings are common. The moderately technical course includes tight single-track, wide open double-track, challenging climbs, and flowy descents. Don’t miss this awesome Backyard Burn course!

The 5K and the 10K races will both start from the Workhouse Arts Center as well, beginning on road and transitioning into the Cross Country Trail towards Giles Run before turning around to return to the Workhouse Arts Center. The grounds of the previous Lorton Reformatory have been repurposed by the Cultural Arts Center and houses famous pieces of art by local and renown artists which truly is a site to see during the year.

Giving Back - Part of the proceeds for this event are going towards donating to the American Heart Association.

Runners Receive - A Performance Event T-Shirt and a Race Medal if you're registered by March 28th. Runners will also be receiving a chip timed event. We will have some extra T-shirts for individuals who register after that date, but it will be as a first-come basis while supplies last.

Allowed - Strollers and walkers are more than welcome to participate and join the event. Our goal here is to get everybody moving and to come together for a good cause while adding a fun atmosphere.

Race Day Registration - There will be race day registration for individuals, but we ask you to arrive early enough before the race if you plan on using this option. This will allow us enough time to get you registered and ready to go, but T-shirts and Medals can't be guaranteed here as we are ordering prior to the event.

New this year: We are increasing the registration fee to $25 to help cover expenses for the race. Since we are charging a fee this year, note that you will not be expected to bring any food or beverages to share. We will be providing food, water / ice, and Gatorade at the start / finish area. Please bring any additional food or beverages that you anticipate needing during the race for your personal use.

The backyard format is based on Lazarus Lake’s Backyard runs. Runners have one hour to complete the 4.167-mile course. Runners must be in the corral at the top of the next hour ready to start the next loop, or they’re out.

In addition to being a challenging run, Furbutt's 24-hour Backyard is also a great way to experience the backyard format. This is an excellent opportunity to run your first marathon, 50k, 50-mile, 100k or 100-mile distance because the backyard format forces you to rest early and often, which can help you run a longer distance than you thought possible. Please note that to participate in this event, you will need to follow backyard rules:

Lap Distance: Each lap is 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers). A completed lap is denoted as 1 Yard. This distance ensures that running 24 laps in 24 hours equals 100 miles.

Time Limit per Lap: Runners must complete each lap within one hour. Any remaining time within the hour can be used to rest, eat, hydrate, or prepare for the next yard.

Start of Each Lap: Yards begin every hour on the hour. Runners who fail to start at the exact time are eliminated.

No Pacing or Assistance on Course: Runners must complete laps without personal aid (one common aid station will be at start / finish area).

Crew support will only be allowed between laps at the start/finish area.

Course Rules: Runners are responsible for monitoring their hydration and should carry a handheld or hydration vest as appropriate for weather conditions. Runners must wear a reflective/light vest and carry a light or headlamp after dark.

Elimination: Failing to finish a lap within the hour results in elimination OR runners who quit voluntarily or miss the start of a lap are also eliminated.

Winner: The last runner standing must complete their final lap solo to be declared the winner and in this race, there may be multiple runners who run all 24 yards. All others technically receive a DNF ("Did Not Finish") designation.

Safety: Runners are responsible for monitoring their physical condition, hydration level, and fueling. Organizers may intervene if a runner is deemed unfit to continue.

Note: This event is inspired by Lazarus Lake, for more information on backyard ultras check out his website https://backyardultra.com/.
