The Spring Backyard Burn (SBYB) is a series of 5 and 10 mile trail running races held on some of the best trail networks in the Northern Virginia Area. All the courses include a mixture of forested fire roads, twisty hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement.

All race information can be found on the race website.

Located just south of the Capital Beltway in Lorton, this beautiful race course includes a mixture of forested and open meadow singletrack meandering through 1600 acres of the former prison grounds. The race starts and ends under the old guard towers at the Workhouse Arts Center, which is the site of the former Lorton Reformatory. The course is one of our least technical and most of it is on singletrack that is a mix of dirt and crushed stone. The only short pavement sections are at the beginning and end of the race. There are no extended climbs, but lots of short ups and downs.

Situated on Gunston Cove and adjacent to Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and Gunston Hall, home of Founding Father George Mason, Pohick Bay is steeped in beauty and history. The trails are excellent, the water views are amazing, and bald eagle sightings are common. The moderately technical course includes tight single-track, wide open double-track, challenging climbs, and flowy descents. Don’t miss this awesome Backyard Burn course!

Come join us for the fifth annual Try or Fail Spring Forward races! The 1-mile course will be run on the Workhouse Arts Center property starting and ending at the baseball fields going out and back. The 5K and the 10K races will both start from the Workhouse Arts Center as well, beginning on road and transitioning into the Cross Country Trail towards Giles Run before turning around to return to the Workhouse Arts Center. The grounds of the previous Lorton Reformatory have been repurposed by the Cultural Arts Center and houses famous pieces of art by local and renown artists which truly is a site to see during the year.

Giving Back - Part of the proceeds for this event are going towards donating to the American Heart Association.

Runners Receive - A Performance Event T-Shirt and a Race Medal if you're registered by March 28th. Runners will also be receiving a chip timed event. We will have some extra T-shirts for individuals who register after that date, but it will be as a first-come basis while supplies last.

Allowed - Strollers and walkers are more than welcome to participate and join the event. Our goal here is to get everybody moving and to come together for a good cause while adding a fun atmosphere.

Race Day Registration - There will be race day registration for individuals, but we ask you to arrive early enough before the race if you plan on using this option. This will allow us enough time to get you registered and ready to go, but T-shirts and Medals can't be guaranteed here as we are ordering prior to the event.
