What is with the name?
I thought it would be a cool name for a race in the heat and humidity of late July. It's also because Killens Pond, where the race is held, is part of the Murderkill River. Murderkill comes from the Dutch words of "Moeder" which means "Mother", and "Kille" which is "Creek".
Course
A 3.10-ish mile almost all dirt loop, totally within Killen's Pond State Park. Some roots, rocks (a seashell or so), rubble - but way gentler than most trails, no rainwater and low rise (maybe 80 feet of climb per loop total). Probably a 1/10 on the technical scale. The good news is it will be mostly shaded. Also, if you get too hot, plenty of opportunities to jump in the pond, esp near the boat ramp. Most wear light trail shoes, few wear road running shoes. No need for super technical trail shoes on this course. The only parts that are not trail are the loop around the parking lot that is .28 of a mile and the aluminum footbridge that is probably .2 miles. North portion of Pondside Trail is broad and mostly dirt (sand+organics). Southside portion is single track with some roots. A footbridge is used to cross pond at dam end. All races will start at 8am (ish) at the picnic tables. Loop around the parking lot and proceed on the Connector Trail (.2 miles) by the picnic tables towards the Pondside Nature Trail then turn right onto the Pondside Nature Trail returning on the connector trail to the turnaround at the parking lot. All races will use the “picnic area” There are bathrooms literally 50 yards from the picnic tables in the parking area. Porta-john MAYBE off south portion of trail near the boat ramp area (Sometimes there is one. Sometimes not).Races are self-supported with a community table for sharing any food/drink/aid. Water will be provided. It won’t be cold. But it will be wet.Timing will be manually. I’ll check off your loops and record your finish time. This race is held in "Fat Ass style". No aid guaranteed (except for water). No shirts (except if you paid for one). No medals. No chip timing. You show up, run the distance, and hang out. If you need to be coddled with fully stocked aid stations, plentiful volunteers to help you, etc, this is NOT the run for you. We are decidedly old school in our approach
Park Information
Killen's Pond is about 15 miles south of Dover, DE on U.S. highway 13. It is a beautiful, well maintained park. Every year, we have first timers comment about what a great and beautiful park and trail it is. Turn left (east) on Killen's Pond Road, indicated by brown park sign, to north entrance of park. Continue past water park to first parking lot and picnic tables at far end. Park should open at 0700 (7 am) for us and will close at sunset, around 2015 (8:15PM). The park has no garbage cans; you bring it in, you pack it out.Parking is ample. Unlike Angela Ivory races in January, the “summer season” at Delaware State Parks charges a fee. This fee is included in your entry fee. I will provide you with a ticket/pass when you arrive. We can't thank the park and their staff enough for their continued support of the race and the excellent job they do on the trails.
Entry
Each race is capped at 30 persons. This means 30 for the 50k and 30 the 12 hour option and 30 for the 50 miler. Why? Well, I'm essentially a one-person operation and any more would make it really hard to manage. There is no waitlist. Why? Because I don't feel like managing one.No deferrals or transfers for the same reason above.
Pricing
All races are capped at $40 (Plus Ultrasignup fees). Why $40? It covers your parking, the park permit fees, race insurance, water (yes I have to buy this). plus the cost of opening the park an hour earlier than their usual opening time for you to arrive.Note that any excess funds remaining after the above will be donated to the park, as well. I do not anticipate this amount being very much at all after looking at the numbers. This is a no refund race. No refunds will be given for ANY reason. If you cancel, your funds will be used to pay above and/or donated to the park.
Other
Weather: EXPECT IT TO BE HOT AND HUMID*It is late July, after all.Plenty of picnic tables. Plenty of parking that is literally right next to the course. You can back your car in and crew yourself easily. PLEASE be respectful that we are visitors of this park. The park is open to all and you will see others using the trail, including families and dogs. Unlike the January event, the park will get “crowded”. The waterpark is open, the campgrounds and cabins will be full, etc.Again, it is a "Pack it In, Pack it out" Park. Do NOT litter. If you see trash, pick it up. We will have trashbags at the picnic tables/pavilion.Not much around the park other than farmland, but:For closest hotels, look up either Holiday Inn Express in Harrington, SpringHill Suites in Frederica or hotels in Dover, DE. Harrington/Frederica are a lot closer (10 minute drive in), but Dover has more options (30 minute or so drive in). You could always rent a cabin at Killens Pond or use the campground. Check their website for details, although it might be slim pickings on the cabins in the summer time (Really nice cabins, btw..Bathrooms, heat, a/c, etc). There is a Royal Farms gas/convenience store probably 3 miles from the Park. Google "Royal Farms Felton, DE" for location. There is a BP gas station and convenience store literally 1 mile outside the park, as well This is a rain or shine event. The ONLY exception to this is thunderstorms. In the event of thunderstorms, I WILL pull ALL runners off the course, as you finish your loop. You will NOT be allowed to start another loop if inclement weather is approaching or we are in the midst of. NO EXCEPTIONS. DO NOT DEBATE ME OR ANY PARK OFFICIALS ON THIS. If you disobey this and start another loop, you are violating race rules and will be disqualified. I don’t mess around with runner safety.TIME LIMITS:All races have 12 hour time limits (8pm-ish)
Event's current local time: 4:13 AM ET
Join us on Saturday August 9thth for the Annual Running Hot Clayton Fire 5K.
Post race Fiesta back at the station!
Ride beautiful, scenic routes (35, 65 and 100 miles) taking you through flat to gently rolling farmland in central Delaware as the route follows lesser traveled roads from Middletown to Clayton, Hartly, points south, and back. All routes will be marked with route arrows and have Support & Gear (SAG) until 5:00 pm. There are rest stops along the routes at regular intervals, five on the Century route!
Because of the flat, gently rolling terrain that the route follows, this event has become a “right-of-passage” for many cyclists as they take on the challenge of their “First Century Ride“.

The Kenzie Rose Youth Triathlon is a multisport race geared toward the youngest competitors, ages 5-15 - the future of the sport. This is a USAT-sanctioned race, and will be timed. PLEASE NOTE THAT AS A USA TRIATHLON EVENT, YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE IN THE CATEGORY FOR THEIR AGE AS OF 12/31/2025!!!!!!
The swim will be held at St. Andrews Swim & Tennis Club in Severna Park, MD.
The bike and run courses will be held on the trails of Kinder Farm Park, directly adjacent to the swim. Please visit the Course Info page for detailed maps of all courses.
About Kenzie
When Mackenzie Rose Beach was born on July 10, 2015, no one knew that this tiny baby possessed the spirit of a warrior. She was a happy little girl, and brought joy to everyone around her, especially her parents, Kate and Andrew, and her big sister, Maddie. However, life as a typical baby came to a screeching halt when, on March 22, 2016, Mackenzie began vomiting and was taken to the Emergency Room, where a scan showed a buildup of fluid as a result of a mass at the base of her brain. Mackenzie underwent surgery to insert a drain for the excess fluid and remove a portion of the tumor for biopsy. The pathology results returned as a malignant cancer, known as Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). This is an extremely rare, aggressive cancer seen in only 3 children out of 1,000,000. Mackenzie endured many brain surgeries and flourished under a protocol by St. Jude, administered at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, involving an experimental drug and chemotherapy. In July
2016, a scan showed the result everyone was praying for – no evidence of disease! As Mackenzie and her family prepared for the next step in the treatment process – traveling to Boston in October 2016 for 6 weeks of radiation – an MRI confirmed the worst possible news. Despite being cancer-free just four months prior, the tumor had returned and spread to other areas in her tiny body. Mackenzie fought with all she had, but she passed away in the arms of her sister, and surrounded by her mother and father, on December 18, 2016.
Kenzie Rose, as she was affectionately known, showed us all what is important in life – family, spending time together, enjoying our blessings, and not taking a single moment for granted. We all hope to make her proud by continuing to live as she would want us to live. To honor her memory, we are organizing this triathlon to raise awareness for childhood cancer and as a fundraiser to support The Mackenzie Rose Foundation. The Foundation was incorporated at the beginning of the year to provide essential items to families experiencing unexpected admissions to the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s National Medical Center. With your generosity, we will be able to fill and deliver care packages containing everyday essentials directly to the hospital. These “Kenzie Kits” will allow parents to spend more time with their sick child instead of worrying about picking up a toothbrush, notebook, or snack - all things that are often forgotten with an unexpected hospital admission. All proceeds
from this event will fund the Foundation to help provide comfort and support to other families dealing with this devastating disease.

A Ten Sisters of Dewey Beach Road Race Series Event
Dave was a proud Dewey Beach homeowner who passed away suddenly of an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia just before his 29th birthday. His compassion for others and his desire to live life to the fullest made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His family and friends would like to create a means to spread awareness about the risks of irregular heartbeat, support the DE beach community by donating defibrillator machines and associated training, and hands only CPR education to community organizations and small businesses.
Past race proceeds have enabled us to donate 19 AED machines to local businesses, necessary to shock a stoped heart back to a normal rhythm. This includes an AED tower available 24/7 in Dewey on the bay side boardwalk area.
Please help us expand the number of hearts protected through your race participation and/or donation. Thanks in advance!

With August temperatures and humidity soaring, we are offering a great way to get a 5K run in! This indoor 5K takes place entirely inside the mall!
Perfectly timed with both Maryland tax-free week and back-to-school shopping, not only can you hit the halls of Arundel Mills, you can stop in for great specials at all of their retailer before or after your run!
Last race we had great specials from Hey Dude, Under Armour, Nike, Lindt Chocolate, Auntie Anne's, Medieval Times, Nandos, Merritt Athletics, and more! Stay tuned to hear who will be participating this summer.
Choose between completing multiple loops for the full 5K or opting for our family‑friendly fun run or walk, featuring a shorter distance perfect for kids and new runners. This race takes place before the mall opens! It won't be a great course for setting a personal best, but we can promise it will be a fun and unique one!
All finishers will receive a medal.
This race is hard capped. If you can still sign up, there is space! Once we hit our cap, we will have to welcome you next year! Strollers are only allowed during the Fun Run/Walk
Sunday Morning Check-In Time:
Elite Runners: 8:00 AM
5K: 8:40 AM
Fun Run/Walk: 9:45 AM
Post-Race Activities!
After you cross the finish line, stick around for post‑race activities, including fitness demos, recovery stretches, training tips, and workout ideas for all ages.
Packet Pick-Up
Bib, swag, and shirts will be handed out before the race! If you have not received it, please arrive by 7:30 AM for Elite Runners, 8:00 AM for the 5K, and 9:15 for the Fun Run/Walk.
Reminder- this is a cupless race! Waters will not be handed out. We have dozens of water fountains on site and want to ensure the floors stay as dry as possible. Please bring a container with a lid for your water.
Swag and Giveaways
All participants receive both a finisher's medal and a shirt! Check in for the swag bag our retailers and partners provide, including giveaways, raffles, promos, and discounts at Arundel Mills stores! Shirts are not guaranteed for runners who sign up after 8/1.
Hydration Station
In order to keep the floors as dry as possible, there will only be a water station at the start/finish line that racers will pass as they go around the mall. While water/drinks are allowed on the course, there will be no water cups while on the course except for water at the food court. The mall has several restrooms available throughout the course that have water fountains. Running with a cup without a lid is not permitted, but running with water or other fluids is permitted as long as it closes (water bottle, camelbak, sports bottle, etc.)
What to Bring
Your own water, bags, and gear are fine to bring! We will have waves starting/finishing in the food court that will provide plenty of tables and chairs to store your items. We cannot allow pets, selfie sticks, glass, or weapons. Note that neither Arundel Mills nor Peake Events is responsible for lost belongings.
Parking and Entrance Recommendation
The closest parking would be the Maryland Live Casino parking garage (free), and use the Food Court Entrance. Nando Peri Peri is located next to that Food Court entrance for reference.
Distance Disclaimer
Please note: Course distance and start times may adjust slightly based on registration numbers and logistics. Waved starts will help ensure plenty of space for running through the mall corridors. The 5k course will be four laps around the mall and is ~1/10th of a kilometer longer than an exact 5K.
Strollers and Children Note
The 5K race will have runners completing four laps around the mall, making for tight spots, especially in two sections that require a small ramp to go up/down. Runners can also opt to run up and down the three stairs as they see fit. Strollers will only be allowed during the Fun Run/walk and must start at the back. Any child participating in the 5K should be able to maintain a jogging pace and stick to the right-hand side of the course. We love kids, but know they like to take off and run around without always looking around their surroundings. Please ensure your child is both old enough for the 5K and can follow proper race etiquette. We invite everyone to join the Fun Run/Walk!
Sponsorships are available - Please contact [email protected]

JOIN US TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
We're back for another year!
Cyclocross season is just around the corner, and now is the time to start preparing!
We'll have programs for both beginner and experienced racers alike!
Just like on race day, the clinic will be held rain or shine.
Beginners Group
This is for the true CX beginner. Sign up here if one (or more) of these describe you:
You've been curious about giving cyclocross a try but didn't know where to start.
You've raced for three or fewer seasons and haven't upgraded past Cat 4 yet.
We'll cover everything you need to get started: equipment, race day prep, fundamental skills, training strategies, and more.
There is a nominal registration fee for this field. We've done our best to keep the price as low as possible for beginners - come give cyclocross a try!
If you don't have a USA Cycling racing license, you will need a one-day license ($15) for this event. You can purchase this at checkout.
Experienced Group
Already have experience on the course, but looking for a refresher on skills or want feedback on what you're already doing? We'll have experienced, pro-racer coaches working with you in small groups to get ready for the season. Sign up for this if you feel like you've got the basics down, have a few seasons under your belt, or don't otherwise fit into the Beginner category.
Not sure what to register for?
Reach out to us using the “Contact Us” link below and we'll figure it out with you!
FAQ
This is the perfect opportunity to give it a try! The Beginners group will cover everything you need to give racing a try, plus the fundamental skills you will use in all of your races. We'll also provide ongoing resources throughout the season to help you progress.
Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to host juniors at this clinic. All participants must be 18 years old on the date of the event (NOT racing age). Fortunately, there are some great resources in the DC-Baltimore area for junior racers. Check out Rock Creek Velo (RCV) and Baltimore Youth Cycling (BYC) for programs they are running.
While a cyclocross bike is great, don't worry if you don't have one. Gravel bikes are also great for cyclocross, as are mountain bikes. If you have a hybrid style bike, that can also be great. Road bikes don't generally have the greatest clearance for the bigger tires used in cyclocross. A lot of people race with clipless pedals (which are great), but flat pedal are also great. But if you're not sure what you have will work (or if you don't yet have the perfect bike), reach out to us and we'll figure something great out! Bikes are great!
One of the main goals of this clinic is to get new people into the sport, so we are subsidizing the beginner fee. (If you think you're being clever by registering for the beginner level to save a few bucks, don't worry - we'll be checking Cross Results.) ;)
Contact us using the link below and we'll figure it out. But in general, the beginner group is really just for those who are starting their journey in cyclocross - Cat 4/Novice and have raced 3 or fewer seasons. If you've already upgraded to Cat 3 (or beyond), or have more than 3 years of racing experience, that's probably not you, so go ahead and register for the experienced group. The main difference will be the subsidized registration fee - if you end up being a better fit for the beginner group, we'll shuffle things around day-of to make sure you get the most out of the experience!
The registration fee covers the insurance and permit fees for USAC. We'll also be providing lunch and some snacks. And we'll have a professional mechanic on hand to deal with any bike troubles. And we want to help cover our coaches’ travel and incidental expenses. Anything left over will go toward further encouraging the growth of the local cyclocross scene. As many have learned, there's no money to be made in local cyclocross - it's all for the love of the sport. (And as a wise woman has said, “If I end up paying someone $80 to force me to practice for 8 hours, that's money well spent.”)
Yes! All participants will need a current USA Cycling (USAC) license! If you've had one previously and it's expired, now is a great time to renew. And if you've never had one, you can get a novice one-day license during registration.
We'll have a mix of short lessons, followed by on-the-bike practice. Skills covered will include race starts, dismounts and remounts, cornering techniques, barriers, bike shouldering, and hand-ups. More advanced racers may cover additional skills, like bunny hopping, as time allows. We'll also spend some time during lunch talking about bikes/tires/tech, training, nutrition, and race-day prep.
The clinic is being put on by folks from Crosshairs Cycling Club and Bluemont Connection Cyclocross, as well as a choice selection of Mid-Atlantic cyclocross heavy hitters for coaching expertise.
Our coaches this year will be:
Rachel Rubino (Haute Factory Racing)
Cole Oberman (Haute Factory Racing)
Kelly Roberson (Haute Factory Racing)
Mike Birner (Sportif Coaching Group)
Taylor Jones (Crosshairs Cycling)
Craig Etheridge (C3 Wagner Roofing)
Hit the “Contact Us” button on the bottom of the page and we'll get you an answer!

With its first burial in 1807, Historic Congressional Cemetery is among the oldest institutions in Washington, DC, and is the final resting place of over 70,000 individuals.
Their stories are American history in microcosm, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Still an active burial ground, it is the only place in Washington where individuals can be buried at a site directly on Pierre L’Enfant’s 18th century city plan.
Historic Congressional Cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011 and continues to build upon the legacy of over 200 years of American history. The cemetery is administered by the nonprofit Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery and owned by Christ Church + Washington Parish. The association is constantly striving to maintain the historic, cultural, and aesthetic qualities of this natural landscape along the Anacostia River. Hundreds of volunteers each year help preserve the cemetery and further its nonprofit mission
