The Triple Scoop has a single goal—to bring road, gravel, and mountain biking together into one race. It's a format unlike anything else in the Midwest, challenging riders to tackle all three disciplines in a single day... for FREE.

In its 5th year, the course covers (in order) approximately 30 miles of road, 25 miles of gravel, and 12–15 miles of singletrack (depending on course conditions).

In collaboration with the folks at Griffin Bike Park and the Vigo County Parks Department, this year's road and gravel routes have been refreshed, bringing new roads, new scenery, and a few new challenges. The mountain bike portion will once again feature a multi-lap format, showcasing Griffin Bike Park's unbelievable, hidden-gem trail system.

Solo racers will find the day to be a true test of endurance, versatility, and technical skill. While the distances may not look overwhelming on paper, putting all three disciplines together has proven to be a surprisingly difficult challenge, with many riders discovering that simply finishing the Triple Scoop is an accomplishment in itself. Some racers choose to ride a single bike all day (less advised), while others swap bikes in the transition area (more advised, with property kept under the watchful eye of the race directors and volunteers).

Relay teams experience the event from an entirely different perspective. Divide the disciplines among teammates, spend the day cheering each other on from the transition area, and enjoy one of the most unique team events on the cycling calendar. Whether you're racing for the podium or just sharing a memorable day on bikes, the relay format has become a favorite for good reason.

How you decide to tackle the race is up to you. If you're looking for a late-season physical challenge, enter solo and see how you stack up. If you'd rather celebrate everything that makes cycling great, gather a team, bring a pop-up tent, and spend the day with us.

Carpool if at all possible. We will be using a large portion of the parking lot as our transition/finish line village (details below), so parking will be somewhat limited.

Transition Village:

The transition village is perhaps the most exciting non-racing element of the race. All racers, crew, and spectators will be stationed in a celebratory “tunnel” of team tents that mark the start and end of each leg of the race (see "Common FAQs #3 for the race start exception).

All racers will “pass” through the transition village/finish line between each leg. For solo riders, this is done to change bikes or for time checkpoints. For relay teams the finish line is the location for the “baton pass." This will also be the finish line for the entire race. Fingers crossed for a sprint finish!

We’d like to see as many teams and solo racers as possible bring out a pop up tent, umbrellas, chairs, coolers, etc. Whether you come bare bones or full-festival mode, you’ll be assigned a spot along the “transition village” to be your official transition zone.

I'll once again have Triple Scoop stickers available on race day for $5 each.

People occasionally ask what it costs to put on a free race. I'm always happy to talk about it—I actually think the numbers are encouraging, because they show that with enough resourcefulness, almost anyone could organize something like this.

After race expenses are covered, every remaining dollar from sticker sales will be split evenly between Griffin Bike Park and World Bicycle Relief. Full nonprofit race mode.

Camp the Night Before

The last two years, my family and I have camped at Fowler Park, directly across the road from Griffin Bike Park, and we've had a fantastic time. We'll be doing it again this year.

If you're interested in arriving Friday evening, we'd love to have a casual campfire hangout with anyone who wants to join us. Whether you're in a tent or camper, it's a great way to kick off the weekend before race day.

Common FAQs:

0. (So common it doesn't even get a number) Can I just ride my very capable gravel bike for the whole race?

• Yes. However, we assure you that the mountain bike route carefully curates the best trails in Griffin Bike Park that highlight PURE mountain biking. Trails incorporated into a gravel race course are awesome - but these trails are not the same as those. Saying all that - run what you brung, and if you have to walk a couple sections just be sure you aren't holding up your fellow racers.

1. Can I use aero bars/a TT bike for the road portion?

• Yes, do whatever it takes to be as fast as possible. Heck, you can use a TT bike for the trails if you want. It’s your body.

2. I’m signing up as a team. Can I do 2 of the legs but grab a teammate for the 3rd?

• Yes. Viable teams are 2-3 members. The 3 legs of the race must be completed in the correct order (road, gravel, mtb) and the same “pass” through the transition village is still required even for those who are completing two legs in a row on the same bike.

3. Do I have to ride my road bike from that gravel parking lot?!

• Nah. Road is the FIRST leg of the race with the start line at the park entrance to make for a more positive start for the road riders. The only downside to this is when you finish the road leg of the race, you’ll either be riding or running your road bike up to the official transition area. Gravel and MTB legs of the race will start and finish at the official transition village. So far, we have seen ZERO flats in 4 years from the roadies that opt to ride their bike up and all the way through the transition village.

4. I'm going to sign up as part of a relay team. Do my teammates need to fill out this form too?

• Yes. The primary purpose of the sign up form is to count how many total participants to expect and to take care of liabilities/rider safety details at a free race. Each team member needs to be submitted as a separate sign up and share the same team name - if there are errors, we will take care of combining you in the data sheet on the back end. 6. Will there be SAG/water/nutrition at the transition?

• As this is a free event, plan on this being self-supported in every way. Last year, we did position a support volunteer at the “wildest” point of the gravel course. However, the nature of the race coming back to the same parking lot lends to a normal distance between aid stations at any other race. We’ll be looking for support once we have a firm grasp on early participants, but plan to bring your own nutrition. We will have large jugs of water at the transition area.

7. Will there be a prize?

• No cash prizes of any kind. We've enjoyed a variety of trophies over the years; Epic laser-cut trophies and etched mini-growlers being the most recent. Trophies will be awarded for the podium in each category (open solo, women’s solo, open team, women’s team, nonbinary solo, nonbinary team).

8. Can I bring my friends and family to watch?

• Absolutely! Griffin Bike Park is the perfect venue for the whole family to enjoy bike-centric fun. Every year, there's a great, family-friendly energy of kids and adults riding the pump tracks and jump lines right next to the parking lot. Warm up by riding down the dual slalom course. Stay tuned for more things to do before, during, and after the race.

10. If I'm doing the whole Triple Scoop solo, how will my bikes be kept safe while I'm out riding?

• There will always be people present at the transition village. Race directors and racers waiting for their turn in the race will provide ample protection through “positive peer pressure”, and the parking lot is very shielded in view from any road traffic (very little) that might drive by.

11. If I'm on a team, what do I do while I'm waiting for my turn?

• Bring a lawn chair, some food, music, drinks, etc! Ride the pump tracks and jump lines right next to the parking lot. Race down the dual slalom course.

12. Can I be on multiple teams? Like, bro, just imagine, if I could blow up the field on the road leg, then switch teams and ride gravel, probably try to blow that up too… then my original team's mountain biker would be able to crush all the solo guys!
