In February 2023, Lesiba Mashiane was running alone through Johannesburg when his coffee shop team from Abstract Coffee Club asked to join. What started as casual 5K runs among baristas became something larger: a wellness movement rooted in showing up. The group grew steadily, attracting runners seeking community over competition. Today, Abstract Running Club operates from its base in Braamfontein, welcoming all experience levels for moderate-paced runs through Johannesburg's vibrant streets and parks. Membership is free and open; no pressure, no gates. Lesiba's personal commitment to consistency became the foundation for a crew that treats running as a shared path to health and connection rather than a race to win. Small in size but deliberate in purpose, they embody a simple philosophy: steady progress builds stronger bodies and stronger communities.

Braamfie Runners started in March 2012 in Braamfontein, the beating heart of Johannesburg's inner city, evolving from an invite-only Nike-supported crew into one of South Africa's most enduring run communities. Built on the spirit of Ubuntu, no one gets left behind and every pace is welcome, with the crew's strength measured by who shows up, not who finishes first. Around 50 members strong, they are a cross-section of Johannesburg itself: diverse, gritty, and tight-knit, united by a shared love for the city's raw, unfiltered streets. Three weekly runs from Prefontaine in Braamfontein, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm and Saturday mornings at 7am, offer routes from 8km to 32km with sweepers ensuring nobody runs the last stretch alone.
