The Great Train Race has been a tradition in Fredericksburg Virginia for over 30 years! The event is one of the largest timed kid’s races on the east coast. Young runners get the rare opportunity to compete in a race just for them.
The race starts near the Fredericksburg Train Station and runs through historic downtown. Runners cross the Crown Trophy Finish Line at the City Docks. Runners and families are invited to the Race Festival located in the commuter lot behind the Train Station for awards, music, vendors, and treats.
The race consists of 3 events for kids under 18:
The 1-mile Express for ages 6 to 17
The 1/2-mile George Dashington for ages 10 and under
The 1/4-mile Caboose Run for ages 5 and under
The Express and George Dashington will be chip timed races. The Caboose Run is a fun run and will not be timed.
All runners receive a finishers medal and race shirt (shirts are only guaranteed when registered before April 1st).

Race bibs and t-shirts* will be available for pick up on September 10 and 11 and race morning. If the in-person portion is cancelled for any reason, all registrations will move to virtual.
*Registrations must be received by August 30 to guarantee a race t-shirt. There is no guarantee that participants will receive a t-shirt after August 30, 2026. Selection of size during registration does not guarantee a t-shirt.

In October 2025, a group of women in Fredericksburg saw a gap in their city's running scene: a space where fitness and genuine friendship could coexist. Social Stride FXBG was born from that observation, and within its first month, over 250 women joined. Founded by women in their 20s and 30s navigating careers, transitions, and personal growth, the crew operates on a simple premise: running builds community. Members span every level, from first-time mile runners to marathon trainees. The signature teal color marks the group's identity across Fredericksburg's historic streets and Rappahannock River routes. Women-only runs, themed events, and multiple pace groups (tempo, moderate, easy) mean there's always a way to show up. No membership fee, flexible scheduling, and casual post-run meetups turn miles into lasting friendships. Social Stride FXBG isn't just growing in numbers, it's become a visible fixture in how Fredericksburg's young women move through their city together.
