The Fall Backyard Burn (SBYB) is a series of 5 and 10 mile trail running races held on some of the best trail networks in the Northern Virginia Area. All the courses include a mixture of forested fire roads, twisty hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement.
Hemlock Overlook, located along the banks of the historic Bull Run, feels surprisingly remote for being so close to Washington D.C. Sightings of deer, beaver, turkey, osprey and great blue heron are not uncommon in this 425 acre park. This beautiful race course consists mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), old dirt roads, and open fields. Competitors will run over rocks and roots and along bull run. The course is designed to be spectator friendly with several areas designated for family and friends to cheer on their racers.
For course maps and additional information, please visit the race website.
Our charity partner for this event is Homestretch. If you are able, please consider making a donation to this amazing organization during registration.
The Horace Mann PTA is hosting its 6th annual Great Turkey Chase 5K & Fun Run, and we are so excited! This is one of the few opportunities we have during the school year where we can come together as a community - families, teachers, and neighbors - to celebrate our amazing school and faculty, as well as have a great time!
Why are we running? Over 75% of the PTA’s fundraising dollars go towards the salaries of many of our partner teachers and specialists – funds that are not provided by DCPS. The PTA also supports a myriad of initiatives, including educational programs like gardening and language, professional development opportunities, classroom enrichment, facility enhancements, and more! Each registered runner and donor makes a huge difference as we strive to further enhance our school. Help us make this year our biggest event yet!
And what's a race without a little competition? Our students are getting in on the fundraiser action by seeking donations from friends and extended family for ultimate bragging rights and a chance to win a Pajama Day and Pizza Party. During registration sign-up, runners will have an option to add a donation for the grade competition! Be sure to mention the name and grade of the students you're donating on behalf of, so they get credit.
Starting time is November 15th at 9:30AM (5K) and 9:40AM (1 Mile) from the Mann parking lot. Note: These runs will not be on a closed course so please keep to the sidewalks and practice caution while running through the neighborhood.

A prediction run is entirely different from other races that you’ve run in the past. Rather than finishing first or running the fastest, the object of a prediction run is to finish as close to a certain time as possible. In the case of the Howard County Striders prediction runs, the goal is to finish as close to 11:00am as possible. One way the Striders prediction runs differ from many other runs is that you get to start whenever you want – whoever finishes closest to 11:00am wins. Oh, and one important thing, you CANNOT use any sort of timing device. Also, no baby strollers, iPods, headphones or animals.
All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Tripp Scholar Athlete Fund.
The run is located at the Jeffers Hill Neighborhood Center, 6031 Tamar Drive, Columbia, MD 21045
