Every Friday at 07:30 outside Brooklyn Running Company, a small group gathers without pace groups, GPS watches, or pressure to keep up. This is Backyard, founded in January 2026 by artist and designer Ella, who asked a question most run clubs never consider: what if showing up to run was also a way of caring for where you live? The crew operates on a simple logic. Every run ends at a locally owned business, deliberately chosen from Black-owned, POC-owned, immigrant-owned, women-owned, queer-owned, or family-owned spots. Around a dozen runners currently gather, kept intentionally small so people learn names and notice when someone misses a week. The point is not pace or output, but presence, participation, and the slow accumulation of shared Friday mornings that eventually transforms a neighborhood into something closer to home.
