This Earth Day weekend, Humboldt Park becomes a place of action, not just awareness.
Rooted in collaboration with the Humboldt Park Advisory Council, the Humboldt Park Earth Day Committee, and NVIRO, the weekend brings together residents from across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs for a shared celebration of community, sustainability, and movement.
The 5K for Earth Day is the culmination of a two day, Earth Day focused weekend centered on care for the land and forward momentum.
Day one is about restoration.
Plant a tree. Clean the park. Give back to the land.
Day two is about momentum.
Cross the finish line together.
After a 13 year hiatus, the 5K for Earth Day returns not out of tradition, but out of responsibility. A responsibility to bring people together around the environment, movement, and community, and to remind us that local action still matters.
Set within one of Chicago’s most iconic green spaces, the race welcomes runners, joggers, walkers, families, and first timers alike. Participation matters more than pace.
The weekend begins Saturday, April 18, with park wide cleanup and restoration at the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse and concludes Sunday, April 19, at the boathouse as participants cross the finish line together for the return of the annual 5K for Earth Day.
This is more than a race.
It’s a shared moment to reconnect with the city, the planet, and each other.
What to expect:
• A clearly marked 5K course through Humboldt Park
• An inclusive atmosphere for all ages and abilities
• A weekend centered on environmental action
Come show up for the planet.
Come move your body.
Come be part of an Earth Day weekend that ends with momentum.
Register today and help turn intention into action.

Four beers. One mile.
The Chicago Beer Mile will take place on Friday June 5th.
Drink, Run, Drink, Repeat! This is a one-mile fun run for runners who enjoy beers. Drink a beer, run/walk/jog (or skip, crawl, whatever you want) your way a quarter mile around the track, and repeat three more times.
There will be opportunities for those who do not wish to consume beer. We will have a Chocolate Milk Mile followed by a Non Alcoholic Beer Mile.
Volunteers are also needed.
Races will begin at 6:00 pm. A final schedule of events will be posted on June 5th. Each race will have 4-14 entries. The event will conclude with two sections of elite Beer Milers. The event will be capped at 200 entries.
There will be prize money for the top three men and women. $500 for 1st place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place. In order to be eligible for the prize money, you must compete in the elite section of the beer mile. To request entry into the elite heat, email [email protected]. You must be in the elite heat to win prize money.
Schedule(subject to change)
6:00 PM- Women's Beer Mile
6:30 PM- Men's Beer Mile Section 1
6:55 PM- Men's Beer Mile Section 2
7:20 PM- Co-Ed Non Alcoholic Beer Mile
7:45 PM- Elite Women Beer Mile
8:10 PM- Elite Men Beer Mile
Beer Mile Official Rules
1.Each competitor drinks four cans or bottles of beer and runs four laps around a standard 400m running track (start with chugging a beer, then run a lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap, then beer, then lap - finish).
- Beer must be consumed before the lap begins within the transition area. The transition area is the 9-meter zone between the waterfall starting line for a mile race and the finish line of a 400m track.
3.The race begins with competitors lined up on the mile starting line, drinking the first beer in the transition zone described in the step above. This ensures competitors cover a complete mile. Competitors can walk/move in the transition area while drinking, but all beer must be consumed in the transition area before setting off to run a lap.
-
Women also drink four beers and run four laps (some past rule lists only required ladies to drink three beers).
-
Competitors must drink canned or bottled beer that is no less than 355mL (12 Oz) in volume, which is the standard can/bottle size in the USA and some other countries.
-
No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate (e.g. wide mouth bottles/cans).
Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner. (e.g. no shotgunning, puncturing the can, squeezing the can, etc.). The same applies for bottles - no straws or other aids allowed that speed up the pouring process. The only action allowed is opening the can with the tab at the top or twisting off the bottle cap of a bottle.
-
Beer must be a minimum of 5% alcohol by volume. Hard ciders, hard sodas, and other alcoholic sugary drinks will not suffice. The beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage brewed from malted cereal grains and flavored with hops.
-
Each beer can/bottle must not be opened until the competitor enters the transition zone on each lap.
-
Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). Vomiting more than once during the race still only requires one penalty lap at the end.
-
When attempting a performance for the official records, it is recommended to provide video evidence of the race and prove that all beer was sufficiently drank. This can be achieved by tipping the empty beer over your head after each chug to verify an empty vessel or by collecting the containers and pouring the contents into a measuring cup to prove there is less than 4oz of liquid/foam remaining total across all four beers. We recommend picking up a pack of disposable measuring cups for your next beer mile event.
Every competitor MUST be over 21 years of age. Designated drivers or use of public transportation is highly encouraged. Identification will be checked at packet pickup.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY FOR 14 YEARS
Open Water Swim CHICAGO was launched in 2012 to help new triathletes and novice swimmers experience open water swimming in a safe, non-intimidating environment. Since inception, more than 20,000 participants have directly enhanced their swim abilities from our clinics and special events!
These community-focused sessions provide participants with expert coaching, gear check, wetsuit rental opportunities, life guard support and post-event socials with fellow participants and coaches.
While we're best known for developing aspiring adults, OWS Chicago also serves experienced triathletes looking to refresh their skills and/or push themselves with fellow enthusiasts. Veterans often enroll in the Swim-On-Your-Own or the competitive Aquathlon options to stay focused on their performance goals.
EVENT OPTIONS
The Open Water Swim CHICAGO series features three ways to participate:
-
Open Water Swim Clinics: Small group swim instruction for beginner, intermediate or advanced-level swimmers looking for open water tips and techniques.
-
Swim-On-Your-Own: This option is for those participants who prefer to utilize the event services (gear check, wetsuit rental, etc) but swim independently.
-
Competitive Aquathlon: Swimmers complete a 750m or 1500m swim followed by a 3.1 mile (5k) run along the lakefront.
OUR COACHES
The historic success of this entire swim operation revolves around support from our dedicated coaching community. Dozens of incredible local event professionals and coaches support each of our sessions. OWS Chicago is constantly incorporating new, qualified triathlon and swim-savvy coaches into the clinic curriculum. These sessions are a great way to give back to the sport, as well as meet potential new personal training clients. Please email us should you be interested in lending a hand.
SERIES PARTICIPATION
This may be a series, but the four sessions operate independently. Participants may enroll in one, two, three or all sessions -- relative to their goals and preference for learning in the small group environment. Participants should use these sessions to grow familiar with swimming in Lake Michigan, eventually gaining confidence to return with others and train on their own.
EVENT LOCATION
All OWS Chicago sessions are hosted at Ohio Street Beach located at 600 N. Lake Shore Drive in downtown Chicago. Parking can be tricky in the area, so we strongly recommend reserving a nearby garage using SpotHero.
ENTRY DETAILS
Registration rates open at a nominal $22 plus typical service fees for all swim clinic or swim-on-own sessions. Prices will increase to $30 within two weeks of each session. The Aquathlon fee is $30, rising to $40 within the same two week window (see schedule below):
-
Session #1 (May 27): Price increase (from $22 to $30, or $30 to $40 for Aquathlon) on Tuesday, May 13
-
Session #2 (June 24): Price increase (from $22 to $30, or $30 to $40 for Aquathlon) on Tuesday, June 10
-
Session #3 (July 22): Price increase (from $22 to $30, or $30 to $40 for Aquathlon) on Tuesday, July 8
-
Session #4 (Aug 19): Price Increase (from $22 to $30, or $30 to $40 for Aquathlon) on Tuesday, August 5
Event capacity is limited to 150 participants per timeblock, many of which will sell-out in advance. Each Aquathlon will be limited to 75 participants. Participants must be 18 years or older by the event day. Participants must be able to tread water on their own, comfortably place their face under the surface, and maintain some level of forward propulsion to enroll.
WETSUIT RENTALS
Wetsuits are very common for open water swimming and triathlon. Not only do swim-specific wetsuits provide a bit of warmth against cold water temperatures (Lake Michigan water temperatures range between 55-75°F through the season), but they're constructed of neoprene -- providing an incredible amount of buoyancy to keep swimmers afloat and more hydrodynamic. It's estimated that 70% of athletes utilize a wetsuit for triathlon swimming.
If you don't own a wetsuit, you're in good hands. Our friends from Urban Tri Gear provide a small inventory of demo wetsuits for use during the sessions (excluding the final event on August 19). A $25 rental fee applies, which can be used as credit towards purchase of a new wetsuit. Urban Tri Gear also offers 5-day wetsuit rentals ($55 sleeveless, $65 full-sleeve) as part of these sessions. The walk-up rental opportunity is great for last-minute needs, but we strongly recommend you contact them in advance to secure your rental suit that's guaranteed to fit you. They will coordinate all logistics.
If you're able, we encourage you to try-out multiple wetsuits (long sleeve, sleeveless, swim skins, etc.) before you purchase one for yourself. It's a good idea to know what makes you most comfortable in the water, and to continually use the same wetsuit for the majority of your training and racing.
REFUND POLICY
These events have a strict no-refund and no-transfer policy, especially due to the limited capacity. If you are unable to attend for any reason, you are not eligible for reimbursement. Should the session be cancelled, management will do its best to offer a make-good relevant to the situation but refunds will not be issued. Thank you for understanding.

The Miles for Manufacturing (M4M) 5K Run/Walk is a beloved tradition at IMTS, uniting the manufacturing community around two shared passions: staying active and giving back. Launched at IMTS 2014, the event has raised more than $250,000 to date-all of which goes directly to STEM programs around the country that prepare the next generation of innovators, makers and problem solvers; that 100% impact is possible because IMTS covers every production expense- from shirts, timing gear to permits and signage. Thanks to this support, every sponsorship dollar and every runner's registration fee is invested in manufacturing education.

Chances are that many of us know someone who has sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, or an abnormal hemoglobin trait.
Sickle Cell disease (anemia) is diagnosed at birth and caused by genetically inheriting two sickle genes, one from each parent. Individuals with Sickle Cell disease have sickle hemoglobin that makes the red blood cells rigid and causes some red blood cells to take on a sickle shape. Some symptoms associated with Sickle Cell disease are: anemia, infections, severe pain episodes, strokes, growth and puberty delay, and acute chest syndrome.
The average lifespan for persons with sickle disease isn’t known, but it has improved due to increased treatment therapies. Bone marrow transplants are a cure for Sickle Cell Anemia, but every individual with Sickle Cell Anemia is not a candidate for this procedure.

Check out fall’s most ‘spirited’ event! It’s the 13th annual 5K on the grounds of the north side’s historic Rosehill Cemetery. Run or walk on the sprawling 350-acre Victorian-era cemetery that opened in 1864. It’s by far the largest cemetery in the City of Chicago (and second largest in Illinois).
Monuments! Mausoleums! Scenic paths! And then there’s the eternal spirits who reside in Rosehill. Among them: more than 10 Chicago mayors, Oscar Mayer, John G. Shedd, Cubs’ announcer Jack Brickhouse, legendary adman Leo Burnett, Sears founder Julius Rosenwald and scores of Civil War vets are just a few of the souls who call Rosehill home.
In addition, there will also be a post run/walk party at the close-by Fireside Restaurant & Tavern.

Public & Free
Hear Ye Hear Ye By way of bipartisan act of Congress and signed by President Obama into federal law, National Bison Day will be henceforth observed the first Saturday of every November! To celebrate this momentous occasion of the newly-dubbed “National Mammal” join a glorious mixed road & light gravel ride to a bison herd / obstinacy at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.
“Bison or Bust! The Tertiary Trek”
This remix of our inaugural 2024 ride is on the preserve’s 30th anniversary, for which they domesticated their roughest gravel segment. Lunch orders will be delivered to the bison preserve’s welcome center. Rendezvous include Metric Coffee (All), Blackberry Market (A & B), Jitters Cafe (All), Midewin Welcome Center (All), and The Junction vintage shop (All) for the after party. Everyone returns same-day to LaSalle St. Station by a specially-reserved Metra car. Before Joliet, anyone starting with “A” group can switch to “B” by just waiting. Everyone can switch to any other group at Jitters in Joliet, as well as the Midewin Welcome Center. Join our Strava club for updates!
“What are the ride rules?”
- DO NOT PET THE FLUFFY COWS!
-
All participants read, understand, and agree to the release / disclaimer / waiver at the bottom of the site before joining the ride
-
Helmets required strapped onto your noggin’
-
Bring a front and rear taillight as well as the tools, supplies, and know-how to change their own flats and address any mechanicals they may experience. From the 15th to 30th of October Comrade Cycles is offering free bike safety checks for our ride participants so get a checkup before the ride to cruise worry-free
-
Observe best ride etiquette at all times: call out all slowing, stopping, speed bumps, holes, doors, cars, riders, runners, walkers, kids, turns, mechanicals, flats, gaps, and especially any pursuing buffaloes
-
Keep your hands on your handlebars at all times, so flap your wings for rough roads instead of pointing. No riding without hands, we are too close together, roads are too unpredictable, and we have too far to go!
-
Keep your eyes on the shoulders of the rider in front of you. They’ll call out and relay hazards as well as take the best line between them.
-
That means if the rider ahead of you hits that minor road hole or whatever you do too, because it’s better than erratic unpredictable riding. No twitchy, racey, or unsafe group riding. There are plenty of other opportunities in other groups for that.
-
No zooming in-between riders in peloton to make it three riders wide. Two wide? Stay that way. Single file? stay that way. It’s not a race, no need to jockey for position, and we will ask people to leave if they risk other riders’ safety
-
Good vibes only! All with good vibes are welcome no matter their color shade, class, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, profession, abilities, biking expertise, and strength.
-
Good vibes only! That means no threatening or chauvinistic behavior of any kind is allowed be it racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ethnic supremacism, or other forms of prejudice, threats, cruelty, or hatred nor are members of such ideologies permitted.
-
No dangerous behavior is allowed and participants must follow all safety instructions of their ride leaders
-
No unsolicited ‘coaching’ is allowed, especially any ‘helpful pushes’
-
No triathlon aero handlebars are allowed they’re too unstable for the peloton
-
No headphones
-
Rides A and B require drop bars or something convincingly equivalent, like bullhorns. Point being that hybrid, flat, swoop, bull moose, albatross, wet noodle, whatever supercool other handlebars are only allowed for C group. This is just for safety in a peloton.
-
No darting between riders. Is the peloton two riders wide? Keep it that way. Is it single-file? Keep it that way. Stay in your lane and ride with predictable behavior. This is not a race and anyone riding in ways that endanger others will be asked to find another ride.
-
Join The ride Group appropriate for your abilities based on both practice and distance. Generally speaking, if you’ve been riding that distance in a week you’re ready to ride it in a day.
-
Veteran brakeless fixed gear riders welcome but behind the peloton so pedal strikes don’t wipe others out.
-
XXAndrew MichalskiXX or any other saboteurs
“What group should I join?”
For both Nachusa and Midewin routes the chillest group rolls at party pace, approximately 14mph, for around 40 miles. Both Midewin and Nachusa have a "B" group rolling for about 87 miles at 16-20mph once rolling. Both Midewin and Nachusa have an “A” group rolling at 18-24mph for about 130 miles. Whatever pace and distance you ride in a week you should able to do it in a day if you prepare well. Please practice riding in groups, calling out obstacles and "slowing" or "stopping" (see ride rules).
No groups are true drop rides. However, on “A” group we have a lot of miles to cover before dusk so if you have a really bad mechanical more involved than a flat, we must ask that you either link up with the next group riding by (when possible) or catch up at the next rendezvous by taking a shorter break to depart with us again. Study the routes and tabs atop the Ride With GPS event page carefully to make your choice. Keep in mind the ride is planned to be very adjustable:
- Midewin Routes
-
Until Joliet, you can downgrade from "A" group by just waiting for "B" group.
-
You can change to any group at Jitters cafe in Joliet, and at the Midewin visitor's center.
-
Midewin Routes
o Until Joliet we ride decently close to the train lines for the Heritage Corridor Metra train, but please keep in mind it does not run on weekends, and National Bison Day is always on the first Saturday of November. If you find yourself bonking your ejection seat lies on the Lincoln Service train home from Summit or Joliet, Carl Sandberg or Illinois Zephyr train home from La Grange, or in a ride share to the nearest Rock Island line Metra station, a line which begins at Joliet Gateway Station.
“What’s the timetable?”
TBA
“Do you have a waiver?”
Riding in groups and on roadways is extremely dangerous. Serious bodily injury and death can occur even when you and those around you are exercising extraordinary care. You must ride at your own risk. Thank you for being careful! By joining any of our rides all cyclists hereby release ride organizers, agents, sponsors, advertisers, partners, volunteers, affiliates and all other persons and entities from all liability. (Thanks Breakfast Club ATX!)
