The Scorchin’ Squirrel is a trail race through Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center’s 1200 acres located just 10 miles west of Little Rock. There are 4 distance options: a 10kish (1 loop), 11.5 mile (2 loops), 15.5 mile (3 loops) or 19.5 mile (4 loops). All distances are approximate. Each loop passes through 1 full aid station and one water drop. There will be refreshments at the end with a cook out at the pool. Please bring stuff to share although Fleet Feet Little Rock and Ferncliff will provide burgers and hot dogs. We will begin serving food at 10 AM. No glass containers please. No pets.
This is a great race for heat training and for trying out trail running with the shorter distances. There is quite a bit of incline (heheh) throughout the course and a few water crossings in wet weather.
All the distances end back at the start of the race, which is at the Ferncliff pool pavilion. The pool will be open after the race. It has a large covered pavilion and runners can cool off and enjoy some food and refreshments. There are lots of changing stalls.
Any proceeds from the event will support Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center. If you’d like to reserve lodging the evening before the event call 501-821-3063 to reserve a room or cabin.
It takes about 25 volunteers to do this event right. Would you like to volunteer and have a great time supporting runners? If so please fill out this very brief volunteer application: https://forms.gle/s2kSoHaT8Ygvm58x8

History of the Broken Sword:
As the legend goes, the sword was broken in battle along a swift creek over the forbidden love between a lost explorer and the chief's daughter of the native Quapaw tribe. Years later, DeSoto and his Spanish explorers were passing through this area when they came upon the same swift creek. As they crossed the stream, DeSoto stumbled upon the broken sword and cried "Spadra!" (espada is Spanish for sword), and so was named Spadra Creek, "Stream of the Broken Sword."
Today, the beautiful Spadra Creek still flows swiftly through the heart of Clarksville and features prominently along the racecourse.

If you plan to ride the Full Tour route, you have the option to bring two different bikes. Many riders will ride the road route with a road bike (or gravel bike) and then switch to their mountain bike (MTB). Or you can complete the entire ride on your MTB! If you plan to switch bikes, remember to bring the shoes you need for each bike! You will need to "check in" your mountain bike and MTB shoes by 6:45 am on the day of the event. Your MTB will be shuttled to the switch point. Once you switch bikes at the trail, you will leave your road bike at the switch point and it will be shuttled back to the start point. After completing the mountain bike trail ride at the Pullman Trailhead, you will simply ride your MTB on the road for 2.5 miles back through downtown (bathhouse row) to the Farmer's Market. If you are not riding the Full Tour, you will complete your routes on one bike.
Typically riders will complete a road route on a road bike.
Likewise, riders will complete a MTB route on a mountain bike.
This is a charity event benefiting the Salvation Army Pathway of Hope. In the event there is inclement (lightening/unsafe) weather or an unforeseen reason the ride is canceled, (as well as participant cancellation) there will be no refunds of entry fee or carry over for next year. We appreciate you showing your support for this benefit!
