Hey Everyone!!!
It's me again... Jeff Willson, A.K.A. "The Rhino!"
I am one of the Junior coaches for the NEYC "New England Youth Cycling" kids team the “WOMPY WARRIORS”. Trail Builder, Recreational Trail Committee, Friends of Wompatuck Member and on the BOD for SE NEMBA as Event Coordinator.
I am very excited to invite you to ride my local trail system The Carolina Hills! The past few years and still building some Awesome NEW Trails. I worked with the Town Officials to get these trails approved.
This will be the 6th official Mountain Bike race at Carolina Hill Marshfield, Massachusetts.
Trail System is in wonderful shape!
Volunteers and myself have been out clipping and clearing the trails all season because it is my private training area, but I am now ready to share it with you.
Some of you know about the "Hills", you can't go down if you don't go up!
This race will have fun laps mixed with dirt roads and flowy single track with a little bit of "WOMPY TECH" you all will enjoy.

Each lap will be about 6-7 miles. It sounds short but you will enjoy the climbs with some fast flowy, double track descents. Sand based dries out quickly like the Cape.
I want to show more people my primo riding spots right here in Marshfield.

A little about Recreational Trail Committee of Marshfield
Who We Are and What We Do:
Established by the Select Board in October 2014, the Recreation Trails Committee is a working committee comprised of Five (5) members and Two (2) alternate members, all Marshfield residents, appointed by the Select Board for overlapping three (3) year terms. The RTC strives to improve town trails and walking opportunities through: Trail Maintenance, Organized Community Walks, Improved Signage, Kiosks and Maps. The RTC seeks to partner with town departments, boards, individuals, local businesses and community groups who are interested in improving our community trail system.
In addition to our appointed members, the RTC is fortunate to have both the Town Planner and the Conservation Agent as Committee Advisors.
The Recreation Trails Committee welcomes additional volunteers who are interested in promoting, improving and maintaining town trails for all Marshfield residents and neighbors to enjoy.
The Trail Ambassadors are a subset of the Trails Committee. Trail Ambassadors perform routine and regular maintenance on the town trails. Trail Ambassadors cut, rake, trim, clean up rubbish, mark, and monitoring trails on a weekly basis. Trail Ambassadors work on a different trail each week for a two (2) hour time period. Trail Ambassadors partner with other volunteers to cut new trails, repair footbridges and install new trail benches. If you have a Trail Ambassador question you may contact us through the Marshfield website.
So, what does this mean? The RTC typically meets the second Wednesday of the month at the Town Hall, Planning Department Conference room. The meetings are open to the public and are scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. The goal is to complete all business by or before 9:00 pm. At times we may meet more often, such as if we attend a board meeting or Town Meeting.
We have an active and varied board, we are always looking for a few new friends, stop by one of our meetings and meet RTC members and advisors.
Thank You for reading all of the notes!

The MoCo Epic is a festival celebrating mountain biking, trails, and the community that makes this region a great place to ride! 2026 marks the 16th anniversary of the MoCo Epic. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with you!
GIVING BACK TO TRAILS
The MoCo Epic is MORE’s biggest community event and fundraiser. The event is made possible by the hard work and generosity of sponsors, partners, and over a hundred individual volunteers.
For the past five years, half of the event’s net proceeds have been placed in a fund dedicated to improving MoCo Epic trails. Projects include:
-
Creation of a true novice loop at Schaeffer through the complete rebuild of ¾ mile of the Orange Trail.
-
Professional and volunteer refurbishment of the Schaeffer White Loop to make it both accessible and challenging for adaptive riders.
-
Purchase of brush mowers, string mowers and multiple gas and battery powered hedge trimmers to keep all the MoCo trails open in the summer.
-
Opening 10 miles of the Seneca Greenway previously hiking only. The project includes replacing rotting bridges, constructing safe passage under Clopper Road, and upgrading multiple sections of trail to make them more sustainable.
An equal amount of net proceeds went into MORE’s general funds. Of this amount, $50,000 has helped finance new trails in Bacon Ridge, Frederick Watershed, James Long, Lake Fairfax, Locust Shade, Patapsco, River’s Edge, Windy Ridge, and a paved pump track in the City of Frederick.
CAMPING
We’re bringing back camping for the MoCo Epic weekend, from Saturday (10/10) to Monday (10/12)! Space is limited to 20 tents and 10 RVs/camper vans. Sunday, October 11
The MoCo Epic is a ride, not a race. This is YOUR adventure. Enjoy it at your own pace and experience some of the best aid stations which have historically featured hula dancers, fog machines, inflatable flamingos, and jambalaya.
Sunday rides will start and end at the mothership in the South Germantown Bike Park. All routes will have aid stations stocked with a selection of sweet and savory snacks, water, electrolytes, first aid supplies, a course map, and a portapotty. Sample GPS routes can be found here. We’re expecting new trail to be added to some of the courses, and final routes will be shared with registered riders.
Adaptive Rides
Adaptive routes are back for the MoCo Epic! This year, we’re offering 5- and 20-mile options. More info coming soon.
Infiniti HR 10-miler
Don't be fooled by the distance, this 10-mile course through Diabase Schaeffer Farm has a good amount of roots and climbing. Experience OG MoCo singletrack. You'll have the option to stop about halfway through your ride and refuel at an aid station before heading back to the mothership for the post-ride party.
Rodgers Consulting 20-miler*
Enjoy some of the flowiest, most fun northern MoCo trails! Your adventure will take you through Hoyles Mill Trail, up through Ten Mile Creek, and into Black Hill Regional Park for your first pit stop. Do a loop around Cabin Branch before heading back on the Diabase Trail and to the mothership for post-ride festivities.
Erik Scudder CFP 30-miler*
Enjoy some of the flowiest, most fun northern MoCo trails! Your adventure will take you through Hoyles Mill Trail, up through Ten Mile Creek, and into Black Hill Regional Park for your first pit stop. Do a loop around Cabin Branch before heading back on the Diabase Trail. Continue into Schaeffer Farm and back to the South Germantown Bike Park to finish. Choose your own adventure
*You have the option to skip 3 miles of Hamilton, Hard Rock, and Cabin Branch trails for a shorter ride.
Fine Earth 40-miler**
Also known as the MoCo south loop, this route offers the highest percentage of dirt trails of all the Epic rides. Starting off on the Diabase Trail, you'll dip into Schaeffer and continue to the fast flow of Seneca Ridge Trail. Traveling south on Muddy Branch, you'll drop down into the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, then turn to climb Seneca Bluffs, and pop out at Black Rock Mill. The final leg of your journey has you climbing back into Schaeffer Farm and onto the post-ride festivities.
Cobalt Bikes 55-miler
The full tour of MoCo north trails! This route strings together Hoyles Mill, Ten Mile Creek, and Black Hill Regional Park trails. Then you'll begin climbing on road to the flowy trails of Little Bennett and Damascus Regional Parks. From there, head south on the Seneca Greenway Trail toward Seneca Creek State Park and connect with the Seneca Ridge Trail for the long, fun run to Black Rock Mill. Then it's the final climb through Schaeffer Farm and back to the mothership for some post-ride refueling. This route is about 85% singletrack with occasional paved roads.
First Citizens Bank 70-miler**
The longest of our marked courses, the 70-miler combines the north and south loops for an epic day on the bike. Start on Hoyles Mill and head north to Ten Mile Creek and Black Hill Regional Park. Climb the road and be rewarded with flowy trails in Little Bennett and Damascus Regional Parks. From there, head south on the Greenway Trail toward Seneca Creek State Park for a tour on the Powerline Trail, Muddy Branch, and finally the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The final portion of your Epic loop takes you through Seneca Bluffs, Black Rock Mill, and Schaeffer Farm, then it's time for that well-earned party. Riders must depart the Seneca Greenway/Riffle Ford Rd aid station (mile 45) by 2:15 p.m. to continue on the course. 70-mile riders who don’t reach the cut-off will be asked to follow the 55-mile route.
Team XXL 100-miler**
This 100-mile self-guided course is not for the faint of heart. While it doesn’t have the long, sustained climbs and downhills of other 100-mile MTB routes, you’ll need to bring your A-game to deal with the shorter, sometimes punchier climbs. Your body and mind will be engaged more often than not, as the course is predominantly singletrack.
This Epic adventure hits all the parks of the 70-miler and squeezes more mileage out of the various trail systems. There will be no course markings for the Hundo, and riders are required to download the GPS route. Riders will be allowed one drop bag (gallon-sized clear bag provided by the event) which they can access about 60% of the way through at the Seneca Greenway/Riffle Ford Road aid station. Sunset on October 12 is 6:30 p.m. and it is required that you carry lights or pack them in your drop bag if you think you will finish after dark. Please note that our aid station partners at Muddy Branch/Turkey Foot Rd, C&O/Riley’s Lock, and Black Rock Mill may be packed up by the time you get there. We will have volunteers hanging out at the last three aid stations with water, snacks, and basic tools until the last rider comes through.
Riders will be asked to check in at each aid station for safety and tracking purposes. Packet pickup on Saturday is strongly suggested to make getting on the trails early in the morning as easy as possible.
**Blockhouse Point Conservation Park and the southern portion of Muddy Branch between River Road and Pennyfield Lock Road are closed for WSSC repairs. The project is set to wrap up in September, but we are working on an alternate route in case the trail is not reopened by the MoCo Epic.

Course Markers and Course De-markers/Sweeps
Course Marking/De-marking is an important part of MoCo Epic preparations, and we welcome first-timers who are willing to learn the ropes. We will be assigning shifts and pairing experienced course volunteers with first timers.
Course Markers are responsible for placing directional arrows along MoCo Epic routes. The arrows will be stapled on trees or staked to the ground. Course marking volunteers must be comfortable riding relatively long distances carrying supplies (signs, wooden stakes, stapler, personal nutrition) and must have their own GPS device. Course Markers are required to carry a cell phone during their volunteer shift and provide their contact number to the MoCo Epic planning team.
Course De-markers/Sweeps are responsible for taking down directional arrows and stakes along MoCo Epic routes and making sure the last riders make it safely to the finish line. Epic riders are usually tired by the time sweeps come across them on the trail. It’s imperative that sweeps encourage riders and can recognize if a rider needs nutritional, mechanical, or medical assistance. If the volunteer can’t provide aid, they must call the MoCo Command Center for SAG pick-up. Course de-markers/sweeps must be comfortable riding relatively long distances carrying supplies (signs, wooden stakes, stapler, personal nutrition) and must have their own GPS device.
Course De-Markers are also required to carry a cell phone during their volunteer shift and provide their contact number to the MoCo Epic planning team.
Sweeper/ Course De-Marking volunteers will be selected on a merit-based system. Not all volunteers registering for Sweeper/ Course De-Marking will be assigned Sweeper Slots. Georgetown Trails Foundation and EnduraRace Trails present the annual DragonSlayer! DS2026
What started as 3 laps for a 78 mile event in 2017 still occurs on the gnarly rock gardens of Goodwater Trail around Lake Georgetown but now, as of 2019, utilizes the 30 mile loop option for more mileage per lap.
This event has achieved mythic status over the years as one of the hardest mountain-bike single day events in the country with up to 15 hours needed to complete the 100 miles, but with bail-out distances of 30, 60, and 90 miles available.
In addition to the classic format, we've upped the ante further and created the hands-down most wicked ride ever with a 200 mile, 36-hour category called The DragonSlayer Legendary. Can anyone even finish this monster? It may only happen once or once every few years, so don't miss out!
THE ROUTE:
The DragonSlayer uses all of the 26 mile traditional Goodwater loop with the addition of four extra miles to add up to the 30 mile distance. See the 2019 route below. It's the same for 2026.
[2026 Dragon Slayer Geo PDF.jpg]
In the past, all laps were in one direction for the given year. This time around, you will ride in “washing-machine” style. That is, your first lap will be clockwise, second lap counter-clockwise, third lap clockwise, and so on. This should add a social element to the event as you can watch each other slowly degrade into base elements over the course of the weekend. The 10 mile kickers for the 100 and 200 distances are always counter-clockwise from the start finish to a sign that tells you to “turn around”. Yes, just like the Bonnie Tyler song.
Where it says “ranger station” on the map: what that means is there is a hut with no one inside to hear your complaint. There is however a water spigot on the back of these you can use to wash the blood and dirt off with or refill water too. They also make a good landmark for someone to find you if you phoned a friend for a rescue.
RULES:
-
180 spots for the Classic and 20 spots for the Legendary. I may change this around based on demand.
-
No e-bikes allowed on USACE parkland and thus no e-bikes allowed in this event.
-
Riders of the 200 mile Legendary MUST start at 8pm on Friday 12/18/2026 and MUST finish before 8am Sunday 12/20/2026 to be considered a finisher. Additionally, they must finish 90 miles (3 laps) by noon Saturday 12/19/2026 (16 hours) or be disqualified and dropped down to the Classic. If they make the noon cut off, they will then have 20 hours to finish the remaining 110 miles which includes two 10 mile out-and-back kickers. They may ride their kickers anytime they wish, including in the opening three laps, but must have a full three laps completed by noon, kickers not withstanding, on Saturday to continue, so they should plan their time carefully. Riders of the 200 can bail at any completed lap distance and will qualify for the appropriate distance reward listed below.
-
Riders of the 90 and 100 mile Classic distances MUST start at 8am on Saturday 12/19/2026 and finish by 11pm 12/19/2026 to be considered a finisher (15 hours). They must also start their final lap BEFORE 6pm Saturday 12/19/2026. Riders of the 100 in addition to three 30 mile laps, must also complete their 10 mile out-and-back kicker before time expires at 11pm Saturday 12/19/2026. They can ride their kicker at any point during the event, but MUST start their final full lap before 6pm.
-
Riders seeking the 30 or 60 mile lesser distances may start at 8am, but must start before 1pm on Saturday 12/19/2026 and be off-course by 11pm Saturday 12/19/2026. They must also start their final lap BEFORE 6pm Saturday 12/19/2026. There is a 10 hour cut-off for 30 and 60 mile distance credit.
-
Anyone starting a lap after 2pm must have a helmet light and a bar light. It is recommended they have a set of backup lights too for safety whether its 2pm or not. Plan for needing up to six hours of lights for a lap.
-
There will be a sweep rider for the Classic which will hit the trail after the last person has started their final lap. There may be a sweep rider for the Legendary as well if anyone lasts long enough to even start a final lap.
-
Riders are allowed to pre-stage food, water, and supply caches along the route, but are wholly responsible for cleaning them up after their event within 12 hours of their finish. Likewise, there is no protection or guarantee that such caches will not be raided by other park users, animals, or participants, so consider how to label, lock and/or conceal them if that is a concern.
-
Riders can accept outside aid as long as they, their supplies, and their bike progress along the prescribed route 100% under their own power. Thus first aid, food, water, mechanical assistance, etc. may all be delivered by a support person along the route, but that aid cannot in any way physically advance the rider, their supplies, or their bike forward.
-
Riders can leave the course and return, by the shortest available route and by any means available, to the start/finish for first aid, mechanical/break-down repair, etc. reasons BUT must return to the exact point where they left the course to continue their event if they wish to do so. Time cut offs are still in effect. They must have GPS tracking verification available after the event to prove they picked up where they left off.
-
Riders can switch bikes during the event as well as Frankenstein together anything that they can pedal under their own power and can borrow parts or even full bikes from others.
-
Riders can help other riders on course apart from physically moving them, their bikes, or supplies forward. So mechanical help is fine, pushing someone's bike or carrying them or their pack for them is not. That is a disqualifier (perhaps they are too injured or drained to continue anyway) for the person accepting the help. You can loan out certain things you are carrying though such as water, food, backup lighting, tubes, sealant, or other spare parts however without it being a disqualifier even though the person being helped are technically now carrying such for you.
-
All riders MUST ride with a GPS tracker AND with a charged cell-phone. Riders must be prepared upon request to show the GPS record of their ride in order to receive credit. Riders will be asked to send a link of their GPS tracker link to the organizer so he may keep track of where you are during your ride both for your safety, schedule planning, and for accountability. Backup battery chargers are encouraged.
-
All riders MUST CHECK IN before starting each new lap or kicker so we know to keep track of you if you go missing.
-
All riders abandoning their ride MUST notify the organizer by email, text, or in person before they leave the event.
-
All participants, riders or spectators, must sign a waiver online through bike-reg or in person at check-in.
-
Absolutely no sales for products or services of any kind at allowed by the USACE on parkland other than offering donations for camping to help defray the rental fee for the two group shelters.
-
All pets must be on a leash at all times and all pet waste must be collected and properly disposed of by owner.
-
Pack it in and pack it out. Leave no trash behind please.
-
No drinking from glass containers in the park. You can pour into a tumbler and then carefully dispose of the glass bottle.
THE SCHEDULE:
Friday 12/18/2026 3pm set-up.
Friday 12/18/26 6pm-7:30pm check-in for all distances.
Friday 12/18/2026 Riders meeting at 7:45pm and planned 8pm DragonSlayer Legendary 200 starts.
Saturday 12/19/2026 6am-7:30am check-in for DragonSlayer Classic
Saturday 12/19/2026 Riders meeting at 7:45am and planned 8am DragonSlayer Classic starts for all distances (if only planning to do one or two laps, start before noon).
SATURDAY 12/19/2026 11pm DragonSlayer Class cut-off time (or at 15 hours). Finish late by even 1 second and it does not count!
SUNDAY 12/20/2026 8am DragonSlayer Legendary cut-off time (or at 36 hours). Finish 1 second late? No credit.
Pack up and leave a trash free park by 10am Sunday.
The organizer reserves the right to actually sleep on occasion during what for them is a 40+ hour event, so please try to self-manage off hours.
AWARDS:
The 2026 DragonSlayer is not a race (though time is kept and published). The goal is to finish. That's it…just finish. Trust me, that's enough. Once you are out there for multiple laps you will realize that is not very easy especially for the longer distances. The DragonSlayer is about you versus the trail, you versus the weather, you versus your mind telling you to quit, sometimes you versus your bicycle that refuses to cooperate, and often times all of the above. Finishing is quite the award in and of itself. But we have some DragonSlayer traditional awards to provide as well:
30 mile (1 lap) - BabyDragon distance. We will encourage you to train for next year to do 60+ miles.
60 miles (2 lap) - DragonMaster rock trophy
90 miles (3 laps) - DragonSlayer rock trophy
100 miles (3 laps plus kicker) - DragonSlayer rock trophy plus 100 mile buckle until they run out.
200 miles (6 laps plus 2 kickers) - DragonSlayer Legendary rock trophy, 100 mile buckle until they run out, plus a dragon-themed commemorative sword (it's a real sword).
A note on the rocks…Tradition is that on your last lap, you choose your rock though sometimes your rock chooses you. It should be at least the size of a large baking potato and the more gnarly it is as Swiss-cheese limestone, the better. Haul your rock with you on your last lap and bring it to the organizer to get marked up. That is your trophy, and you will treasure it for the rest of your life. Your rock does not necessarily have to be from the Georgetown area, but if it is not, it should have some special significance for you and at least be potato-sized.

We will also be getting jersey designs together for finishers to order on their own nickel as in years past. The jerseys are designed according to the distance you achieved. Yes the Legendary jersey will be…well…Legendary.
Jerseys from 2018 and on:
[image0 (1).jpeg] [image1.jpeg]
NUMBER PLATES AND CHIP TIMING:
We use a Race-Result timing system which has a antenna mat you ride over to record time events. There is no promise, warranty, or guarantee that timing will work perfectly as this is not a race, but we are pretty good at timing, so that would be unforeseen. Chip timing can do funny things after the clock strikes midnight, so for the Legendary, it is more of an automated check-in device than anything else.
DragonSlayer Legendary riders get a specific number plate that lets everyone know what they signed up for and may imply that they are completely insane for doing so.
DragonSlayer Classic riders get their own version of the number plate which will still be hard-core as they have all been in the past.
Register by November 16th and you will get a number plate with your name on it. I will even let you choose your 3-digit or less number first come first serve. Use the event contact form to request your number.
[8b3100be-e078-4bad-ba1b-a28849cad1db.JPG]
All plates will include a single RF chip attached with 3m adhesive on the back. I would encourage you throw an additional level of packing tape over this as the race is so brutal, we have had chips dislodge before.
If you show up wanting to ride using your TMBRA plate or anything else other than the DS2026 plate, you will be criminally trespassed and banished from the event for a period of no less than 99 years with no refunds.
PARKING:
Park along Park Road 8 which is the left turn after entering the park. There will be some traffic cones and signs and perhaps an eager volunteer (6am to 8am) to direct you there. PARK ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE in the grass as you enter as close as you can to the Cul-de-Sac without parking in the Cul-de-Sac unless you are a volunteer or event staff. You will ride past your car twice a lap along Park Road 8 making it easy to re-supply.
The main parking lot as you enter the park gate is available as overflow though we've never needed it in the past. Park Road 8 is a half mile long.
We will hold vehicle traffic on Park Road 8 five minutes before and after the mass starts for the Legendary and for the Classic or until the entire peloton is onto the trails.
START/FINISH AND AID STATION:
The start/finish line is at the end of Park Road 8 in the Cul-de-Sac along with basic bathrooms, water jugs, packet pick-up, first-aid (very minimal), and bike wash.
There are more water jugs on the other side of the lake at the Westlake Parkway trail-head.
Water is also available via spigots at Camp Tejas, Hogg, Overlook, and Cedar Breaks parks.
There are additional trail-side bathrooms at Camp Tejas and Overlook. Cedar Breaks as well, but they are well off-course.
CAMPING/LODGING:
Primitive tent/car camping is available at the start/finish area first come first serve. There are water spigots for drinking water and bike-wash, plugs for charging lights, and a couple of typical park-land restrooms available. 100 spots available for tents (parking your vehicle along park road 8 after dropping off your camping gear in the cul-de-sac area of the start/finish). It is greatly appreciated if campers can donate towards the shelter rental fees to offset costs for the organizer. A QR code will be available onsite for this or you can send directly to @Todd-Galbraith-6 on Venmo.
There are improved and shelter campsites a short ride distance away at Russell Park which are available through the Lake Georgetown website (https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234665)
There are RV slips available a couple of miles away at Jim Hogg park which can be booked through the Lake Georgetown website (https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232612), but they are a ½ mile off the route and a several mile ride from the start/finish.
There are also campsites at Camp Tejas (https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234643) and Cedar Breaks (https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232544?tab=campsites) but these are much much further away.
WEATHER:
The event will occur rain or shine, within reason. The event is insured for inclement weather that would create a significant hazard for riders and/or significant trail damage in the opinion of the organizer. This means you could still have to ride in some amount of rain, cold, heat, etc. If this is a concern, consider purchasing your own event insurance. A lot can happen in a 36 hour event window, so be prepared.
INSURANCE:
The event will be covered by the required amount of insurance provided by OBRA/NOBRA to satisfy the USACE. Participants will sign a waiver and be expected to handle all their own medical bills, or other costs associated with this event.
DISCLAIMER:
The Goodwater trail is an unforgivingly brutal test of bike handling skills, endurance, and strength. It is a 30 mile loop of which 20 is rock-garden to include about 2000 vertical feet of climbing per lap. It is a very difficult trail. Participants should not attempt unless they have pre-ridden the lap to first know what they are in for. They should likewise train for their distance goals. Sturdy bikes and strong tires are a requirement to finish and even the best will at times break.
Participants are expected to self-rescue. You can call the start/finish and we can assist with calling 911 to your location, but your ultimate survival whether in success or failure solely resides in your own hands.
ABOUT OUR SPONSORS:
The Georgetown Trail Foundation is dedicated to planning, building, maintaining, and advocacy of mountain bike and hiking trails in the Georgetown area. The famous Katy trail is their masterpiece and thanks to their hard work, more and more land is being set aside for additional trails in the future.
EnduraRace Trails, formerly just EnduraRace, is headed up by the race organizer known as Todd Eric who is also known for timing, race promotion and event management for mountain races across Texas and Arkansas. He is also an accomplished trail designer and builder whose current capstone work is the Forrest Creek Ranch trail which has been described as “sacred geometry” in terms of carefully built flow for maximum speed and fun. He plans to work some trail building in soon for both Lakeway and Georgetown as his day-job schedule allows.
More sponsors to come we hope!
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
Ride your own pace and do not race. Don't blow up lap 1 trying to stay up with the pro-level riders or anyone else faster than you for that matter. Even if you are the slowest out there, you may still turn more miles than the faster riders in the end and take home the rock trophy they wanted but their ego stole from them.
If you ride with a buddy, you need to ride to the lower common denominator and not push each other past the lessor's ability. Recognize though when it is time to tell your faster buddy to push on without you and let them take their best shot at their distance goal.
Plan your work and work your plan. Hydration and Nutrition coupled with realistic pacing goals are the key. Plan for 24oz of water with electrolyte mix (4-6oz sips at a time) and 300 calories (1 gel per 20 minutes) per hour max. Anymore than this and it blocks up your gut or washes out your electrolytes. Add protein to the mix after third hour and on to the end. Save the caffeine for the final lap. Go sparingly on thick solid foods without a lot of water (24 oz/hr max).
Keep a steady pace in the rocks with "light-hands" to keep the bike from bogging down. You need a solid 7mph average which means 5-6mph in the rocks and 10-12mph in the smooth. If a climb pushes you towards zone-4 heart rate, get off your bike and without a pause, walk the hill. At the top, get on and ride again immediately. Stay in zone 2 and 3 as much as you can.
Do not sleep unless you are SURE you can get going again after a short nap and keep your pit stops to 5 minutes or less barring repairs, etc. A 15 minute break can quickly become a 50 minute break and cost you your finish. Roll in, resupply, clean/oil chain and stanchions and leave for next lap. DO NOT SIT OR LAY DOWN if at all possible! Do not let your body think it is time to rest or that it is getting a rest. Remember when your body tells you it can do no more, you are only about 40% into it's full endurance capacity.
Hammer nutrition, pickle juice, Infinit, Tailwind, and other endurance racing products are fantastic for keeping you going but you have to TRAIN WITH THEM to know how your body responds to them. Do not try a new product the day of the DragonSlayer. Stick to the tried and true.
Pre-ride the course. Start now even if one lap is a struggle. Go out-and-back from each trailhead 5-10 miles each direction spread across several rides until you have the fitness to complete a full lap. Yes the trail needs some maintenance right now, but by the time of the event, it will be pristine if the weather cooperates.
Good Luck and keep the rubber side down!

Please note that due to the terrain, environmental conditions, and weather, the number of course signs we can place is limited. Participants should be prepared to navigate using the provided GPX files, maps, and course markings painted on the ground.
Course markings:
• Green arrows indicate the correct direction of travel.
• Red X's indicate a wrong way or "Do Not Enter" section.
It is essential that you ride your own ride and do not simply follow the wheels in front of you. Pay attention to the course markings and navigation at all times.
NYCMTB and Freshkills Park are volunteer-supported organizations, and all event proceeds go directly toward creating more cycling and outdoor recreation programs for the public.
Volunteers are needed on event day. As a thank you, volunteers will have their event entry fee waived. Please ask us for details if you are interested in helping.

Sat, Oct 10, 2026 at 10:00 AMSee full details
Date: October 10, 2026
Time: 10am, (race meeting at 9:40)
Location: Griffin Bike Park, 10700 Bono Rd, Terre Haute, IN 47802
Contact: Email, Instagram
The Triple Scoop has a single goal—to bring road, gravel, and mountain biking together into one race. It's a format unlike anything else in the Midwest, challenging riders to tackle all three disciplines in a single day... for FREE.
In its 5th year, the course covers (in order) approximately 30 miles of road, 25 miles of gravel, and 12–15 miles of singletrack (depending on course conditions).
In collaboration with the folks at Griffin Bike Park and the Vigo County Parks Department, this year's road and gravel routes have been refreshed, bringing new roads, new scenery, and a few new challenges. The mountain bike portion will once again feature a multi-lap format, showcasing Griffin Bike Park's unbelievable, hidden-gem trail system.
Solo racers will find the day to be a true test of endurance, versatility, and technical skill. While the distances may not look overwhelming on paper, putting all three disciplines together has proven to be a surprisingly difficult challenge, with many riders discovering that simply finishing the Triple Scoop is an accomplishment in itself. Some racers choose to ride a single bike all day (less advised), while others swap bikes in the transition area (more advised, with property kept under the watchful eye of the race directors and volunteers).
Relay teams experience the event from an entirely different perspective. Divide the disciplines among teammates, spend the day cheering each other on from the transition area, and enjoy one of the most unique team events on the cycling calendar. Whether you're racing for the podium or just sharing a memorable day on bikes, the relay format has become a favorite for good reason.
How you decide to tackle the race is up to you. If you're looking for a late-season physical challenge, enter solo and see how you stack up. If you'd rather celebrate everything that makes cycling great, gather a team, bring a pop-up tent, and spend the day with us.
Carpool if at all possible. We will be using a large portion of the parking lot as our transition/finish line village (details below), so parking will be somewhat limited.
Routes (in order):
-
Road route (~30 miles): TBD - updated by September 1, 2026
-
Gravel route (~25 miles): TBD - updated by September 1, 2026
-
MTB route: 2 laps of https://www.strava.com/routes/3255178681813258410
Transition Village:
The transition village is perhaps the most exciting non-racing element of the race. All racers, crew, and spectators will be stationed in a celebratory “tunnel” of team tents that mark the start and end of each leg of the race (see "Common FAQs #3 for the race start exception).
All racers will “pass” through the transition village/finish line between each leg. For solo riders, this is done to change bikes or for time checkpoints. For relay teams the finish line is the location for the “baton pass." This will also be the finish line for the entire race. Fingers crossed for a sprint finish!
We’d like to see as many teams and solo racers as possible bring out a pop up tent, umbrellas, chairs, coolers, etc. Whether you come bare bones or full-festival mode, you’ll be assigned a spot along the “transition village” to be your official transition zone.
Race Notes/Event Philosophy:
The Race Is Still Free
The Triple Scoop will once again be a free race. At this point, it's become part of who we are.
Several racers have asked what they could do with the race entry fee they would normally expect to pay. If that's you, we'd encourage you to consider supporting one (or both) of the organizations that help make this event possible.
Support Griffin Bike Park
Griffin Bike Park generously allows us to take over their trails and parking lot on race day at no cost. Beyond that, the Friends of Griffin Bike Park volunteer countless hours helping with course marking, timing, setup, and cleanup. If you'd like to give back to the people who make this race possible, consider making a donation here:
https://griffinbikepark.com/cash-donation/
Support World Bicycle Relief – Indiana
The Indiana chapter of World Bicycle Relief is another organization we're proud to support. Their work helps provide life-changing transportation through bicycles around the world.
You can donate here:
https://www.powerofbicycles.org/fundraisers/wbrindiana
Stickers = Race Support
I'll once again have Triple Scoop stickers available on race day for $5 each.
People occasionally ask what it costs to put on a free race. I'm always happy to talk about it—I actually think the numbers are encouraging, because they show that with enough resourcefulness, almost anyone could organize something like this.
After race expenses are covered, every remaining dollar from sticker sales will be split evenly between Griffin Bike Park and World Bicycle Relief. Full nonprofit race mode.
Camp the Night Before
The last two years, my family and I have camped at Fowler Park, directly across the road from Griffin Bike Park, and we've had a fantastic time. We'll be doing it again this year.
If you're interested in arriving Friday evening, we'd love to have a casual campfire hangout with anyone who wants to join us. Whether you're in a tent or camper, it's a great way to kick off the weekend before race day.
Camping reservations can be made here:

Common FAQs:
- (So common it doesn't even get a number) Can I just ride my very capable gravel bike for the whole race?
- Yes. However, we assure you that the mountain bike route carefully curates the best trails in Griffin Bike Park that highlight PURE mountain biking. Trails incorporated into a gravel race course are awesome - but these trails are not the same as those. Saying all that - run what you brung, and if you have to walk a couple sections just be sure you aren't holding up your fellow racers.
- Can I use aero bars/a TT bike for the road portion?
- Yes, do whatever it takes to be as fast as possible. Heck, you can use a TT bike for the trails if you want. It’s your body.
- I’m signing up as a team. Can I do 2 of the legs but grab a teammate for the 3rd?
- Yes. Viable teams are 2-3 members. The 3 legs of the race must be completed in the correct order (road, gravel, mtb) and the same “pass” through the transition village is still required even for those who are completing two legs in a row on the same bike.
- Do I have to ride my road bike from that gravel parking lot?!
- Nah. Road is the FIRST leg of the race with the start line at the park entrance to make for a more positive start for the road riders. The only downside to this is when you finish the road leg of the race, you’ll either be riding or running your road bike up to the official transition area. Gravel and MTB legs of the race will start and finish at the official transition village. So far, we have seen ZERO flats in 4 years from the roadies that opt to ride their bike up and all the way through the transition village.
- I'm going to sign up as part of a relay team. Do my teammates need to fill out this form too?
- Yes. The primary purpose of the sign up form is to count how many total participants to expect and to take care of liabilities/rider safety details at a free race. Each team member needs to be submitted as a separate sign up and share the same team name - if there are errors, we will take care of combining you in the data sheet on the back end. You can always email [email protected].
- Will there be SAG/water/nutrition at the transition?
- As this is a free event, plan on this being self-supported in every way. Last year, we did position a support volunteer at the “wildest” point of the gravel course. However, the nature of the race coming back to the same parking lot lends to a normal distance between aid stations at any other race. We’ll be looking for support once we have a firm grasp on early participants, but plan to bring your own nutrition. We will have large jugs of water at the transition area.
- Will there be a prize?
- No cash prizes of any kind. We've enjoyed a variety of trophies over the years; Epic laser-cut trophies and etched mini-growlers being the most recent. Trophies will be awarded for the podium in each category (open solo, women’s solo, open team, women’s team, nonbinary solo, nonbinary team).
- Can I bring my friends and family to watch?
- Absolutely! Griffin Bike Park is the perfect venue for the whole family to enjoy bike-centric fun. Every year, there's a great, family-friendly energy of kids and adults riding the pump tracks and jump lines right next to the parking lot. Warm up by riding down the dual slalom course. Stay tuned for more things to do before, during, and after the race.
- If I'm doing the whole Triple Scoop solo, how will my bikes be kept safe while I'm out riding?
- There will always be people present at the transition village. Race directors and racers waiting for their turn in the race will provide ample protection through “positive peer pressure”, and the parking lot is very shielded in view from any road traffic (very little) that might drive by.
- If I'm on a team, what do I do while I'm waiting for my turn?
- Bring a lawn chair, some food, music, drinks, etc! Ride the pump tracks and jump lines right next to the parking lot. Race down the dual slalom course.
- Can I be on multiple teams? Like, bro, just imagine, if I could blow up the field on the road leg, then switch teams and ride gravel, probably try to blow that up too… then my original team's mountain biker would be able to crush all the solo guys!
- You can only sign up for one team (Paul).

Race Info
The Black River Grand Prix returns! Join us on Saturday, June 19, 2027 for the Black River Grand Prix weekend, a celebration of fast racing, big loops, varied terrain, and fun in the woods. The format is simple: mass start on one big lap (or two). Want to race 15 miles (25k) of the best the Center has to offer? Enter the Grand Prix. Think it's so nice you want to do it twice? Then the 50k Grand Epic is for you. And if racing isn't your thing and you just want a signed ride and a good lunch, then the Grand Tour has your name on it.
Whatever your category, this ain’t XCO, this is VT mountain biking - flow, tech, jank, doubletrack, ski trail, and maybe even a dirt road or two - there’s something for everyone. There's even a bit of pavement at the start.
The 2026 Black River Grand Epic field will head off at 10:00am for the 25-mile Epic race featuring nearly all the riding the Center has to offer. Two loops (plus a parade lap!) of nearly all our trails in the most fun layout we can pull off. This is not sufferfest racing, this is the local's loop, routed the way the builders like to ride.
The Grand Prix will start 5 minutes later at 10:05am for those who just want one sweet race lap.
Five minutes later at 10:07AM the Grand Tour riders go off on a mellow cruise of the same loop. The lap never loops back into the stadium, so once you’re gone, you’re gone, though the Grand Epic racers will come back through the Upper Field after their first ~15-mile lap.
First folks back win. The courses will look nearly identical to the 2026 Grand Prix course, with a few changes and reroutes to keep y'all on your toes.
Check out the Race Guide! for more info about this year's event.
Pricing and Prize Purses
The Grand Prix will be $50 for open racers, $30 for U23 competitors, and $25 for juniors (ages 18 and under). The Grand Epic will be $75. The Grand Tour costs $35.
We're still in the process of figuring out prize money. But we will have cash prizes for the top three of each gender in both distances.
We will call up podiums for the top 3 overall men and women, and the top junior (U20) boy and girl. Door draw prizes will be distributed by random draw at bib pickup.
On-site Lodging
Did you know the Center has on-site lodging with meals available? Whether you want your own private cabin, a lakeside cottage, or just a room in our Cedar Lodge dorm, we can meet your needs. A room in Cedar lodge (with three meals included) starts at just $155.
