ABOUT THE NORTH CAROLINA AZALEA FESTIVAL
The North Carolina Azalea Festival is held every Spring in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Azalea Festivalâs roots go back to 1934 with Dr. Houston Moore who had the vision of transforming un-kept, swampy Greenfield Lake into a beautifully landscaped park. He enlisted the support of a coalition of local clubs, headed by the Wilmington Rotary Club, to bring the vision to life. It took nearly ten years of financial ups and down before the park finally blossomed, but once it did, its splendor inspired Dr. Moore to conceive the idea of a Festival to be held annually âwhen the flowers burst into bloomâ. The first North Carolina Azalea Festival was held in 1948 and despite modest projections, drew over 60,000 spectators â including one invited guest that came all the way from Hollywood: movie queen Jacqueline White, who was named the first Queen Azalea.
Here is a quick snapshot of who we are:
-
We're locally-grown; in 1948 Wilmington citizens and various community groups came together to create the first Azalea Festival.
-
Our mission is to stimulate the economy and promote volunteerism.
-
We help create an estimated $51 million dollars annually in economic stimulus.
-
We have over 1,000 volunteers who help plan, manage, and orchestrate around 50 Azalea Festival events each year.
-
Many big names have joined us at the Azalea Festival: President Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Carrie Underwood, Duran Duran, Snoop Dogg, Kelly Ripa, Phylicia Rashad, Michael Jordan...just to name a few!

HOW YOUR REGISTRATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE
All proceeds from this race benefit Cape Fear Children supported by Childrenâs Cancer Partners of the Carolinas (CCP), a nonprofit focused on serving children battling cancer across North Carolina and South Carolina. For 14 years, the race was known as The Cardinal Strut benefitting Strut for Kids, a nonprofit serving Wilmington area children and youth on their cancer journey. CCP and Strut for Kids merged in 2023 to provide more comprehensive support to over 100 Cape Fear children more efficiently and effectively.
Children Cancer Partners of the Carolinas will, in the coming year, support more than 2,800 children battling cancer with help that is immediate, comprehensive, and continuous. CCP helps families overcome distance and cost disparities so their childâs care is timely and complete. There is NO cancer treatment in Cape Fear, so families must travel great distances for pediatric oncology care. CCP is committed to supporting these kids and their families from the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and beyond. Through your generous support of this race, families facing childhood cancer can focus on whatâs most important: their childâs health.

Be part of one of the oldest and most iconic races in Wilmington, NC & join us for the annual Tri-Span 5K, 10K & Livestrong Mile.
Both 5K and 10K courses wind through historic downtown Wilmington and along the picturesque Cape Fear Riverwalk which hugs the bank of the Cape Fear River. The 5K is an out and back course through downtown Wilmington. The 10K course is what makes Tri Span such a unique race. Runners will have the opportunity to run the three downtown bridges. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will take runners across the Cape Fear River. The Thomas Rhodes Bridge will give runners a birds eye view of the USS North Carolina and the downtown Wilmington riverfront. Last, the Isabell Holmes bridge will cross back over the Cape Fear River and bring runners back into downtown Wilmington and to the finish line.
Back by popular demand - the LIVESTRONG MILE. Join us as we honor friends and family whose lives have been impacted by cancer. This is a non-timed 1-mile walk or run and we invite everyone to participate.

NOT A RACE - A RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
Zombie Run
The doomed participants will run a non-timed 5k course with zombies stationed and hidden throughout the course. The zombies will attempt to pull flags from the runnersâ flag belts. The first 50 participants who complete the course with at least one flag intact will receive an additional prize. Whether you are eaten by the zombies or you escape to tell the tale, all participants will receive a t-shirt. Must be 12 or older to participate. Zombies LOVE middle school kids so we recommend for their survival they are accompanied by a parent.
Monster Mile
A family-friendly run/walk where kids can bring their Halloween baskets to trick or treat and take pictures with our zombies. Families are encouraged to run the monster mile together. Zombies will be along the course, cheering the runners on as they run the mile.
This race is a spooky fundraiser used to support educational trips and program opportunities for Lyceum Academy. Lyceum Academy is an Honors program at New Hanover High School. The program is founded on project-based learning and collaboration across curriculums often outside the classroom. Over the junior and senior year, we will take several trips to enrich student understanding and perspective. Help us continue to meet our goal of never leaving a student behind on a trip due to financial issues. This event is run through the Lyceum Academy Boosters and is not affiliated with New Hanover County Schools.

EVENT
Parkway Subaru Battleship NC Half Marathon presented by Heineken & GFL 10K | 5K presented by Fleet Feet
Runners, get ready for the trek through downtown Historic Wilmington, North Carolina with a Half Marathon, 10K or 5K! The Battleship Half Marathon started in 1998 and is one of the oldest Half Marathons in the South. We are excited for you to join us.
Moored in quiet dignity and majesty the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons visitors to walk her decks. Envision the daily life and fierce combat her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. From all across our Nation they came, young men who had grown up in the crucible of the Great Depression and now determined to serve their Country in its time of need. These are the men whose stories you will encounter through their oral histories, photographs, and mementos as you experience the Ship and the exhibits. Step back in time and let history come alive through the crewsâ stories. Imagine yourself steering the ship, starting her engines or even firing the guns. JOIN THE CREW and be a part of Battleship history at the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA! www.battleshipnc.com
