Be part of one of the oldest and most iconic races in Wilmington, NC & join us for the annual Tri-Span 5K, 10K & Livestrong Mile.
Both 5K and 10K courses wind through historic downtown Wilmington and along the picturesque Cape Fear Riverwalk which hugs the bank of the Cape Fear River. The 5K is an out and back course through downtown Wilmington. The 10K course is what makes Tri Span such a unique race. Runners will have the opportunity to run the three downtown bridges. The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will take runners across the Cape Fear River. The Thomas Rhodes Bridge will give runners a birds eye view of the USS North Carolina and the downtown Wilmington riverfront. Last, the Isabell Holmes bridge will cross back over the Cape Fear River and bring runners back into downtown Wilmington and to the finish line.
Back by popular demand - the LIVESTRONG MILE. Join us as we honor friends and family whose lives have been impacted by cancer. This is a non-timed 1-mile walk or run and we invite everyone to participate.
Presented by our friends at Maus, Warwick, Matthews, and Co

Drink- Run- Repeat. Got your attention?
Looking for a unique twist on your typical race experience? Look no further! Introducing our exciting event: Drink-Run-Repeat. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just looking for some fun with friends, this race promises an unforgettable experience.
Join us at the beautiful Briar Patch Hunting property, situated just north of Poplar Grove Plantation. Here's how it works: participants will tackle a 5K loop, but with a twist. Before each lap, you have the option to enjoy a refreshing 12-ounce beer or indulge in some chocolate milk, with a tempting offer of a 2-minute deduction off your lap time.
But wait, there's more! For those who want to kick off the excitement early, you can run the Beer Mile. Before the main event, participants can partake in the Beer Mile challenge, where you'll enjoy a beer and run a quarter-mile, setting the tone for an adrenaline-fueled adventure ahead.
Now, we know what you're thinking—running in the summer heat and through the woods may sound daunting, but fear not! Consider it an added thrill as you navigate through nature's obstacles. Keep an eye out for snakes slithering in the woods and be prepared to brave the elements as you conquer the course.
Whether you're flying solo, pairing up with your best buddy, or forming a team of 3 or 4, the goal remains the same: conquer the 20K course in style. Please note, the beer option is exclusively available for those 21 and older. However, fear not, as chocolate milk will also be on offer for those under 21 or simply looking for an alternative refreshment.
As if that weren't enough excitement, participants will be required to hold a relay baton during their leg of the race, adding an extra element of camaraderie and challenge.
So, grab your running shoes, rally your crew, and get ready for an adrenaline-fueled adventure like no other. Drink, run, repeat - the ultimate recipe for a race day to remember!

The Liam Strong Charity Beach Run was created to honor our son, Liam Fredric Batten, who we lost at 6 months of age to childhood cancer. In the short time he was here, Liam inspired every person he touched in more ways than we can put into words. We want to honor Liam and give back to all of the doctors and nurses at North Carolina Children’s Hospital that are so special to our family.

Founded in 1979, as the Pepsi Triathlon, the YMCA Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon is a favorite event among locals and triathletes near and far. This event creates a lot of excitement and enthusiasm within the race community because of its scenic location in beautiful Wrightsville Beach. The course is flat and the distances are short, making it a great first event for new triathletes, and a great time trial for more experienced racers.
In recent years, the YMCA has added a Youth Triathlon event in addition to the traditional Sprint Triathlon, increasing the participation in younger athletes. The Y has also added a Corporate Relay Division to encourage local businesses to come out and compete for a very large trophy to display in their business, not to mention bragging rights for the year!
Today the event is comprised of the traditional sprint triathlon and a youth triathlon, increasing the participation in younger athletes. We've also introduced a corporate relay division to encourage businesses to come out and compete for a very large trophy to display in their office, not to mention bragging rights for the year!
Race History
The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina's Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon first held in 1979, was the brainchild of Karl Sutter, a then resident of Wrightsville Beach. Karl was competitive by nature and had been college swimmer. A few years after college, Karl had taken up running to get back in shape, and one day sprained his ankle and then turned to cycling as an outlet for fitness while his injury healed. When reading Sports Illustrated in the spring of ‘79 he noticed a small article about the first Ironman triathlon with it’s 12 participants that was held in Hawaii the prior fall. Karl approached the local YMCA which was under the direction of Jack Morris at the time, and a new event for the area was born. This triathlon originally named the Pepsi YMCA Triathlon would become the first and longest running triathlon on the east coast of the US with its start of 99 participants that September, 1979.
RHOTI is a 501(c)3() non-profit organization which uses the money raised from an Island-wide bicycle ride to help local breast cancer patients & survivors. This 26-mile bike ride takes place every year.
Now in existence for over 10 years, Reel Housewives of Topsail Island continues to help our community and take pride in our cause. Last year we had over 500 bike riders and are eagerly anticipating even more this year.
This is a fantastic event, an amazing experience and most importantly, for a wonderful cause! Please join us in making a difference and thank you in advance for your support.
Movin' Mullet 5k Run presented by Marine Chevy
When you hear the word mullet, do you think of the fish or the rockin’ hairstyle? With our race, we hope your future answer will be both. To help Swansboro kick off their Mullet Festival, we will hold the Movin’ Mullet 5K the Saturday before the festival on October 3rd.
We hope that you will use this opportunity to show off your fun clothing and awesome mullet hairstyles. Whether it is the North Carolina Neck Warmer, the Kentucky Waterfall, the Camero Crash Helmet, the Tennessee Top Hat, the Beaver Paddle, the El Camino Headrest, or even the Mississippi Mudflap, all mullets are welcomed…and actually encouraged.
We know that you will be all business in the front at the start line but that it will be a party in the back when you receive your medal as you cross the finish line. So channel your inner Billy Ray Cyrus, Wayne and Garth, John Daly, Andrew Agassi, Mel Gibson, every '80's wrestler or Tina Turner and go ahead and register now and claim your spot.
This event is owned & operated by the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission. Learn more about us at www.playjosc.com
Swim The Loop starts and finishes at the Dockside Restaurant, which is located on Airlie Road (Wilmington side of the Intracoastal Waterway). The race will start at a high tide to ensure an even, but challenging tide pattern throughout the 3.5-mile swim. Don’t be fooled though; there will be times of incoming tide, falling tide and some slack tide.
Mott’s Channel Sprint starts at the Trailborn Surf & Sound, located on Wrightsville Beach, and finishes across the intracoastal at the Dockside Restaurant on Airlie Road. The course is approximately 1.3 miles long and is a point-to-point swim. The race will start at a high tide to try and ensure a slight incoming to slack tide throughout the 1.3-mile swim.

AdventureCORPS® – the organizers of the iconic worldwide series of Badwater® races – are pleased to host the Cape Fear Marathon & Half Marathon on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. This is the home of fabled and legendary Cape Fear, and the home to our annual Badwater Cape Fear ultramarathon - now in its 12th year - the "(B)east Coast" counterpart to our two California-based races, Badwater Salton Sea and Badwater 135. This third edition of the Cape Fear Marathon & Half will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
With 26.2 and 13.1-mile race options, Cape Fear Marathon and Half Marathon presented by Mount to Coast takes place entirely on Bald Head Island and its car-free, one-lane-wide roads, plus a short but spectacular stretch on the beach around Cape Fear herself. The start line is located at Old Baldy, the oldest lighthouse in North Carolina, with an aid station nearby. Another aid station will be located at the Bald Head Island Conservancy, our local charitable partner, and a third aid station is located where runners enter the beach to go around Cape Fear. The finish line is quite near the start line, and is located at the marina end of the wooden bridge which crosses the marsh creek. The finish line is also located behind Jules Salty Grub, our finish line party host.
Essentially, half-marathoners will do one and a half laps of the island, with one .75-mile sand stretch around Cape Fear, while full marathoners will do three laps of the island and three trips around Cape Fear for a total of 2.2 miles of beach running, along with 24 miles on the golf cart roads of Bald Head Island. There will be three aid station locations along the race route, which is more than adequate, BUT this is an adventure marathon in a remote location, so carrying a hand-held water bottle, waist pack, and/or hydration pack is a must. Additionally, this is a "cupless" race, so carrying the Badwater race cup is critical. The time limit for the half is 4 hours, and 7 hours for the full.
LOCATION and TRAVEL:
Bald Head Island and nearby Southport, NC (featured in the film “Safe Haven”) are ideal vacation get-away spots for the entire family, located less than one hour from Wilmington, NC and its major airport with American, United, and Delta service. (Flying into Myrtle Beach, SC is another convenient option.) Runners will enjoy the remarkable beauty and quaint southern charm of this area, as well as this impeccable and one of a kind race experience, no doubt making this race an annual pilgrimage! Participants are responsible for making their own travel and ferry arrangement to get to and from Bald Head Island. Visit BaldHeadIslandFerry.com and download the Bald Head Island Ferry app to book ferry tickets.

MORE ABOUT CAPE FEAR:
Cape Fear is a prominent headland jutting into the Atlantic Ocean from Bald Head Island on the coast of North Carolina in the southeastern United States. It is largely formed of barrier beaches and the silty outwash of the Cape Fear River as it drains the southeast coast of North Carolina through an estuary south of Wilmington.
Cape Fear is formed by the intersection of two sweeping arcs of shifting, low-lying beach, the result of longshore currents which also form the treacherous, shifting Frying Pan Shoals, part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Dunes dominated by sea oats occur from the upper beach driftline back to the stable secondary dunes, where they mix with other grasses such as Saltmeadow Cordgrass and panic grass, as well as seaside goldenrod, spurge and other herbs to form a stable salt- tolerant grassland.
The Cape Fear estuary drains the largest watershed in North Carolina, containing 27% of the state’s population.
Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian explorer sailing for France, made landfall after crossing the Atlantic at or near Cape Fear on March 1, 1524.
The name comes from the 1585 expedition of Sir Richard Grenville. Sailing to Roanoke Island, his ship became embayed behind the cape. Some of the crew were afraid they would wreck, giving rise to the name Cape Fear.[1] It is the fifth-oldest surviving English place name in the U.S.
Cape Fear was the landing place of General Sir Henry Clinton during the American Revolutionary War on May 3, 1775. The 1962 movie Cape Fear and its 1991 remake were set at Cape Fear.
The legend of Cape Fear lives on with BADWATER® CAPE FEAR, and now the CAPE FEAR MARATHON!

MORE ABOUT OLD BALDY:
Bald Head Lighthouse, known as Old Baldy, is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. It was built to help guide ships past the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. Old Baldy was completed by 1817 for just under $16,000 using bricks salvaged from the previous Bald Head lighthouse. A stone plaque above the entrance identifies the builder as Daniel S. Way, and the foundry for the lantern room, that was also salvaged from the old tower, as R. Cochran. Old Baldy was originally equipped with an array of 15 lamps and reflectors, and as technology improved, it later housed a Fresnel lens. It was decommissioned in 1958, but stands as a day beacon and symbol of Bald Head Island. The lighthouse has been restored and is open to the public; come climb its stairs to the top! Since 2014, Old Baldy has stood watch over the Badwater Cape Fear start line. Learn more at OldBaldy.org.

Badwater fans and race participants will appreciate that BHIC cares for the pristine setting for the Badwater Cape Fear race route and its role as a seat turtle nesting site and sanctuary. The Conservancy also serves as the host and finish line for our event. As such, our goal is to annually raise $10,000 to purchase one of the special UTV vehicles which BHIC uses to patrol the beach and care for sea turtle nesting sites.
Since 2014, AdventureCORPS has made or facilitated more than $155,000 in donations to the Bald Head Island Conservancy.
