The Turkey Trot 5K is a family-favorite tradition that takes place on Thanksgiving morning before all of the festivities begin for the day. Be sure to bring your friends and family so that you can wobble before you gobble!
The 5K begins at the LYCC of Gardner-Webb University and the race route goes throughout the beautiful town of Boiling Springs. Running a race that matters this holiday season is what the Turkey Trot is all about; all proceeds from the race go to the YMCA's We Build People Scholarship Fund so that we can provide financial assistance to those in need so that they can have access to the YMCA. We can't wait to see you there!
General Info
Brought to you by Tanawha Adventures, the South Mountains Marathons are a collection of trail races which are held in the beautiful South Mountains State Park in North Carolina. Hope you are psyched for chilly weather, steep trails, gorgeous views, and a few creek crossings! Due to lingering damage to the park, some trails remain closed, but we are happy to bring you an incredibly scenic mountain race with multiple new overlooks never seen before in the half marathon. Our longer distances are on pause this year as access to our backcountry aid station is inaccessible for the time being. We hope to bring back the 50k and marathon in 2027! Come enjoy testing your abilities on these prime running trails in this pristine mountain range. There will be times that your head will be between your knees on the climbs, times when your quads will feel like they are going to bust through your skin, and times when your feet will feel like ice cubes. With all kidding aside, the trails are very runnable, but challenging. We consider this an excellent entry level mountain trail race if you are seeking a little more climbing (well a lot more actually) than the local park trails in your neighborhood. The half marathon includes approximately 2,600 ft in elevation gain. It will be challenging, but these are highly runnable trails! If the race needs to be postponed due to inclement weather (significant ice/snow), the race will be held on January 24th. If roads look to be mostly clear to drive to the course, the race will be one as normally scheduled.

Our Mission
Our mission for putting on this race is three fold. First, we want to show off this jewel of a park located in Western North Carolina and how great the trails are for running. Secondly, we want to support the Foothills Conservancy in their mission to protect the South Mountains, the Blue Ridge Escarpment, and other lands in the Western Piedmont. Through the help of the Foothills Conservancy, the South Mountains are one of the most well protected mountain ranges in the country. Lastly, we want to provide the best race experience for you that we can. We've designed a top notch, beautiful course that is challenging but doable even for the lesser experienced trail runners, and provide excellent aid station support throughout the run, so you can keep your mind on the trail and the majestic views around you, not your water bottle.
Refund Policy
Refunds of 75% of entry fee (does not include taxes and fees) will be granted up to October 15th. A refund of 50% of entry fee (does not include taxes and fees) will be granted up until December 15th. After this time, no refunds will be given. We do not allow transfers or deferments in any case at any time.If the race needs to be canceled for any reason (unforeseen acts of nature or COVID), the race will be run virtually "Tanawha style" (aka on the actual course, not anywhere) if rescheduled dates of January 25th/26th are a no go as well. Please plan your calendar accordingly. No refunds, transfers, or deferrals will be given in the case of race moving to virtual.

Gather your friends to run/walk the R-S Central High School Cross Country course. This two-lap course features mostly packed dirt or grass trails and has some paved sections. Runners start the race on the north end zone of the football field and head into the woods where they will wind their way through a canopy of foliage and fields until they return to the stadium for a finish on a beautiful track. This is a great 5k for runners, joggers, and walkers alike. Spectators will also love it because they will get to see and cheer you on multiple times throughout the race.
A 5K off road/cross country run in the Vein Mtn. area (south of Glenwood). T-shirts will be limited to the 1st 30 registered runners and medals will be given to all finishers.
This 12 hour event is at Lake James State Park located at the edge of the Linville Gorge area of North Carolina.
This will be the last race in our series.
This will be our 7th year at the state park, and we look forward to offering another great time in the great outdoors. As with all our races, we like to offer racers a little bit of everything. This race will be no different: a bushwhacking O-course, single track and some road mountain bike riding, and some scenic paddling.
Teams of 1-4 will travel together along the course. The objective of the race is to gather a punch from as many Check Points (unmanned flags in the woods) within the allotted time. The team with the most points in the least amount of time wins.
Bring the lights!
We’re off to the races again at Tryon International Equestrian Center. TIEC is a world class equestrian facility that hosts many prestigious events throughout the year. While you may feel removed from the hustle and bustle at TIEC, you'll find no shortage of amazing lodging options, ample food and entertainment in the village (nearly every night of the week), beautiful surroundings. This dynamic course features well-trodden horse trails, thigh burning red clay hill climbs, and rushing creek-beds will test your dexterity if you want to reach the finish line.
The Rotary Club of Morganton, with the sponsorship support of UNC Health Blue Ridge, will present their First Annual Zombie Run 5K and One Mile Family Fun Run on October 10, 2026 at the Courthouse Square in downtown Morganton, NC. The morning will start at 9:00 AM with participant check-in with the Family Fun Run (no chasing Zombies in the Fun Run, but they may be lurking along the way) starting at 10:00am and the 5K Zombie Run starting at 11:00. The run will be followed by an After Party at Courthouse Square with Big Daddy's Food Truck & Kountry Girl Bakery & Arepitas Food Truck on site along with Zombie beers and an Oktoberfest brew from Sidetracked available for purchase.
What is the Zombie Run? Who wants to run just a simple 5K? In a Zombie Run, you run a 5k while avoiding the advances of the Zombies!! Runners are equipped with Velcro belts holding 3 flags and the goal is to finish the run with as many flags as you can. Zombies are stationed intermittently throughout the route and they will try to steal the runners’ flags. Flags will be turned in for prizes. In addition, there will be overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for those who manage to finish with the fastest times and most flags. In a world with Zombies, running fastest, out in the lead, may not be the best strategy to preserve your flags - there is something to be said for not drawing attention to yourself.
Timers will be stationed along the route shouting out times; a timeclock will be located at the finish line; and volunteers will be at the finish line sorting finishers.
What is the Family Fun Run? This run is for anyone who wants to be part of the festivities but doesn’t want to run 3.1 miles or interact with Zombies. It’s a great opportunity for families and friends to run…or walk…together.
What happens after the runs? There will be an after party with food and music back at the starting pavilions - a fall festival atmosphere to round out the day. Two food trucks will be on site: Arepitas and Big Daddy's Food Truck & Kountry Girl Bakery. Sidetracked Brewery will be selling Zombie and Oktoberfest beers. There will be activities and games, music, and fun for all.
What is the cost to participate and what is included? Registration for the Zombie Run 5K starts at $30. After September 1, registration cost increases to $35. Registration costs increase again after October 1 to $40. Registration for the Family Fun Run is $10. Fun Run participants receive two special gifts they can collect after the run. Zombie Run participants are assured a long-sleeve t-shirt through 9/25, 2026.
Where do the proceeds go? The Rotary Club of Morganton raises funds to distribute to organizations and agencies that help the community. The funds raised through this event in 2026 will be awarded to Burke County Habitat for Humanity and The Enola Group.

Volunteers and RD will vote for their favorite costume of the day and award that person with a free entry into any Tanawha Adventures race of their choosing in the 2026
calendar! We will give out a free entry to both the 50k and half marathon winner of the contest. About Us Tanawha Adventures grew out of a desire to give back to the very land and trails so many of us enjoy. Our goal is to Run. Inspire. Conserve. Our hope is that our participants become inspired by the scenic beauty surrounding them and join us in efforts to conserve and protect our wild lands and trails. We accomplish this by designing beautiful courses, partnering with local conservation and advocacy groups, and allocating a substancial percentage of our profits to the cause. Tanawha Adventures was created in 2016 by Brandon Thrower, a passionite lover of trails and public land. After gaining experience in directing ultra marathon races over many years, Brandon saw a great opportunity to make a greater impact in the area of funding for conservation efforts. What better way to create more advocates for public land and recreation by creating events that put people in the places most needed
of conservation. We hope that you leave our events inspired to stand up and make a difference and know that your support of our events leaves a lasting impact on the protection of our trails and wild lands. Waitlist FAQ - How do I know my order on the waitlist? Click on the waitlist button above on this page to view where you stand currently on the waitlist.- What are my chances of getting off the waitlist? If you are in the top 15 of the waitlist, your chances of getting in by race day are very high, but not a full qaurantee. You should go ahead and be training as if you are in the event. If you are lower than 15 down the waitlist, your chances diminish the further you are down the list. Historically, we've never exceeded inviting any more than 25 people off a waitlist and that is very high, but know that not everyone accepts a registration invite and many decline. So you could be number 35 on the waitlist, but still get in by race day.- When will I know that I got off the waitlist? An
email will be sent to invite you to signup for the race off the waitlist after a spot opens up. You will have one week to confirm your entry before the invite will be removed- How soon should I expect an invite? Most likely you will not receive an invite until the final few weeks before the event up to two days before the event. Description
While the date remains the same, the events and course are all new this year. Though we appreciate everyone who took part in the 5K, 10K, 10M, and fun run in the past, attendance never took off. So, we're going to try a different type of race that in some ways adds more flexibility and possibilities for the participants, but is also easier for us to manage. For 2026, we're switching the Lake Rhodhiss Trailfest to be a 3 hour, 6 hour, and 12 hour event where your objective is to get as many miles as possible on a 3ish mile loop that includes two miles of trail and one mile of crushed cinder greenway. The flexibility for the participants is that if you aren't interested in maximizing your miles, you can now come with a goal distance you'd like to reach and sign up for the event that allows you time to do so. For example, if you've always wanted to do a 50K, you could sign up for the six hour and run at a 5 mph pace to reach your goal. Or, you could sign up for the 12 hour and even hike your way to your goal.Lake Rhodhiss Trailfest is still the kickoff event for the Great State Trail Day the following weekend. More details will be coming out soon, but there will be space for you to put up a 10x10 tent or table at the start/finish area and an assortment of food and beverages will be available during the races. We also hope to have live music on the pavilion stage at times during the race. Whatever it takes to motivate you into "one more loop."

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Lincolnton, is a North Carolina non-profit 501 (c)(3) and donations may be tax deductible.
ABOUT THE RAIL TRAIL:
The Marcia H. Cloninger Rail-Trail, known locally as the Lincolnton Rail-Trail, is a 1.5-mile paved trail, and is especially popular with walkers, joggers, bikers, and parents pushing baby strollers. Benches line the route, inviting you to pause and take in this enchanting town and trail. The trail is maintained by the City of Lincolnton.
The trail offers a chance to search the heart of this small Southern town, highlighted by a stately courthouse, model Main Street, thriving arts scene, and nearby lakes and mountains. Once an eyesore covered in kudzu and debris, the former Norfolk Southern Railroad corridor is now the pride and joy of “Lovable Lincolnton”.
For more information on the Lincolnton Rail Trail visit https://www.carolinathreadtrailmap.org/trails/trail/marcia-h-cloninger-rail-trail
ABOUT THE PIRATE:
"In 2021, a book entitled Jean Lafitte Revealed, Unraveling One of America’s Longest-Running Mysteries by Ashley Oliphant and Beth Yarbrough presents the theory that Jean Laffite, did in fact successfully change his name and live out the rest of his natural life, dying 1875 at the age of 96, under the pseudonym, “Lorenzo Ferrer” in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Ferrer is buried in a marked grave at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Lincolnton, North Carolina. The grave is commonly referred to as locals as “The Pirate’s Grave.” Whether or not the story is true, it would make for a great movie."
https://potus-geeks.livejournal.com/1456158.html
The Current:
"Laffite’s legend in Lincolnton involves a possible son by Louisa, an alleged murder at a plantation, an argument with another Frenchmen also living undercover and a sword with his initials hidden in plain sight."
It's Back!
The Slam the Dam 10K is back! As most of you know, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure were devastated by Hurricane Helene in 2024.
While the area is slowly recovering, the Lake Lure Olympiad Committee is pleased to be able to bring back both the Slam the Dam 10K as well as the Race to the Rock 5K, as part of their "Race for Recovery" weekend. Unfortunately, the Lake Lure Triathlon will have to wait another year as the lake is still not up to proper standards for safe swimming.
NOTE: This is a difficult course with lots of elevation changes.

NOT your Typical Backyard Ultra
Race Description: NOT Your Typical Backyard UltraThis isn’t your average backyard ultra. In fact, it flips the format entirely. Most backyard races demand runners complete a loop every hour — no more, no less — until only one is left. But in this race, the clock is your ally… and then suddenly, it’s not. You’ll run a 3.1-mile (5K) loop on repeat. What makes it different? The time limit changes. It starts with 40 minutes to complete your first loop. Then the next loop gives you 45 minutes. Then 50. Then 55. Then 60.Just when it starts to feel a bit easier… the clock resets back to 40 minutes. From there, the cycle begins again: 40 → 45 → 50 → 55 → 60 → reset… and so on.This format continues until there’s only one runner left. But finishing isn’t guaranteed. The last runner standing must complete one final loop solo within the current time limit. Fail to finish in time, and the race ends with no winner. This event blends strategy, endurance, and mental toughness in a format that rewards patience — but punishes hesitation. Runners must decide when to push, when to recover, and how to adapt as the clock shifts beneath their feet.Quick Facts:Loop Distance: 3.1 miles (5K)Time Format: Increases from 40 → 45 → 50 → 55 → 60 minutes, then resetsElimination: Miss the cutoff, you're outFinal Rule: One runner must complete a solo loop within the time limit to claim victoryThis is not your typical ultra. This is a race where time gives... then takes.Where the strategy is as important as the speed.Where only one can finish — and even that’s not guaranteed. Are you ready to test your limits?
