Great River Ride 2026
A Fundraiser for the Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail Inc.
Post Ride Entertainment and Buffet at the finish
2026 marks the 39th Anniversary of the Great River Ride. Over the years the GRR has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and Bicycling Magazine as one of the top century rides in America. A variety of routes are offered to match the skill levels of all participants. Event proceeds will benefit the programs of the Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (FOCGRT), a 501 3c nonprofit organization.
Staffed refreshment stops along the ride as well as a post-ride buffet with live entertainment from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
You will encounter knee-popping hills, breathtaking views, awesome descents, and gorgeous fall foliage as you tour the hilltowns of the Eastern Berkshires. Add in miles of stone walls, waterfalls, plenty of New England white churches, loads of colonial homes, historic keystone arches, a wild and scenic river, and did I mention hills. But thats not all, we've got rest stops staffed with friendly cyclists and snacks, including our famous "Baked Potato" stop.
The Westfield River, the Great River in the river ride, is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River. The GRR wanders the course of this scenic river to give you a unique cycling experience. For 2026 we're using most of the original route, thanks to Mass Highways repaving projects.
The GRR Gravel Route is a mix of pavement, gravel, dirt and seasonal roads that we’ve enjoyed fall riding on for over 50 years. The 72 mile route is 40% unpaved.. The route will take you through the remote Knightville Basin and Chesterfield Gorge with stunning vistas along the East Branch of the Westfield River. You’ll pass through the Knightville Meadows, the Rainbow Pool, the Little Gorge and the Chesterfield Gorge on your ride. Most climbs are paved but Thayer Rd. is a moderately difficult climb of 1.4 miles on dirt ranging from 10% to 7%. A long descent to River Rd. follows a seasonal road with some steep downgrades. At River Rd. you will have a choice of the final gravel climb up Maynard Rd. or the bailout paved climb up East River Hill to the Spud stop at the Chester Hill Church. Gravel/Dirt sections will not be monitored by SAG vehicles and Cell Phone coverage is limited. Be prepared to handle mechanical problems, and flats. Several miles of the route follows a gated road closed
to motor vehicles. We recommend teaming up with other riders on these sections. Tire widths of 38mm or wider are recommended. Fallen leaves will hide loose and bony surfaces, so caution on descents is advised.
Our Winery Ride uses the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail and New Haven/Northampton Canal Trail for a flat 28 mile ride with a stop at the Brignole Vineyard for snacks (wine will be available for purchase).
Our 42 mile road route includes one moderate climb up the Granville Gorge with a mid ride rest stop at the Brignole Vineyard. At the vineyard you will have the choice of returning on the road (rolling terrain) or using the rail trail (flat).
The 25 mile route will give you a taste of the area's hills. While there is no mid-point rest stop on this route, you will be able to visit the Granville Harvest Festival mid-way through the ride. Visit craft booths, sample local Mead and take a break before heading back to the finish party.
Family Friendly - Free entry for children 15 & under riding with a registered adult.
Riders choosing to ride the RUSA sanctioned 200K must be current RUSA members and are expected to comply with RUSA Randonneuring Rules and the official start times for their respective event.
The RUSA Brevet and Populaires options are a timed events. A Poulaire is a timed long distance event of less than 200K while a brevet is 200K or greater conducted under the rules of the Adaux Club Parisien and its American counterpart, Randonneurs USA. Like a Gran Fondo pace line riding is permitted and there is an upper time limit for finishing. Brevet and Populaire riders cannot start before the posted start time. The clock start at the posted start time for each ride, no adjustments are made for late starts. All brevet and populaire riders are issued a route card that must be signed/stamped at each control (rest stop). Completed cards must be signed and handed in at the finish. The RUSA (Randonneurs USA) Brevet and Populaire are timed with a 6:00 AM start time for the 200K ride. No adjustments are made for late starts and all finishers must turn in a completed ride passport at the end of the ride to have a time recorded. 200K Brevet riders are required to have lights
(front and rear), a reflective vest and reflective ankle bands.
The Great River Ride benefits the Bicycle Advocacy efforts of New Horizons Bikes and the Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail.
Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail exists to ensure that the Columbia Greenway project is realized. Specifically, Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (FOCGRT) will advocate for the planning, design, construction, maintenance and continuance to the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail, as well as advocating for cycling improvements to make Westfield a bicycle friendly community.

New England's Fall Classic, the Lime Rock Park Epic
Based at the legendary Lime Rock Park in Connecticut's Litchfield County, this gravel fondo showcasing waterfalls and covered bridges has emerged as an autumn classic in the Berkshires. Perhaps the most beautiful ride in the region, this course and format are welcoming to riders of most abilities on a proper bike. For those who want to go hard, the timed segments will challenge them. For those looking for a nice fall tour, these roads will enrapture you…especially given the fall foliage that peaks earlier than the rest of New England.
All riders will start and finish on the fabled raceway near the Sam Posey Bridge, complete a lap on the raceway and then exit the venue. Riders will be offered three distances: The Epic (70 miles), the Explorer (55 miles) and the Express (25 miles). The Epic and Explorer will feature chip timed segments. Cumulative times across multiple segments will be compared for podium places. All riders will receive a meal and drink ticket for the post-ride celebration.
RETURNING FOR 2026: 5K Running Race to Support the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. After the gravel riders depart the venue for the Epic and Explorer events, organizers will hand the venue over to our friends of the Berkshire Running Center to host a 5k running event on the fabled Lime Rock Park racetrack. To find out about that, click HERE.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES. Riders seeking discounted or comp entries may be able to provide volunteer service in exchange for such discounts. Parents of juniors are encouraged to do so. Contact [email protected] for more information.
PINK PATROL DOMESTIQUES WANTED! Would you like to ride the event and help out with getting differing levels of riders to the finish for a deep discount as part of our Pink Patrol? If so, come join our team and help make someone's experience better along the way. Domestiques are welcome and encouraged to ride at their own pace in the timed segments and will be considered for awards, if so desired. To be considered for this exciting opportunity to contribute, contact [email protected] for more information.
ENTRY DEFERMENT POLICY: While Domestique Events DOES NOT OFFER REFUNDS for any reason, organizers will allow entrants to either transfer their entry in the Lime Rock Park Epic to another person OR defer the entry to the 2027 Natchaug Epic being held March 27. Entries may only be deferred one time. The deadline to do so is 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5. To request a deferment and/or transfer send email to [email protected].
The Routes
THE EPIC
70 miles, 5,200 ft of elevation, 20 sectors, 5 timed segments, 2 rest stops
If Ralph Lauren could design a bike ride, this might just be the product. With road names "Wildcat Hollow," "Dark Hollow", “Old Asylum,” and "Race Track," we knew that Paul and Bob found some good stuff for our course. And that's all BEFORE Rest Stop 1. The Epic will send riders north by The Great Falls along the Housatonic River before cutting "Between the Lakes." The route turns south and carries riders through several rolling gravel sectors to Sharon. Then we truly make it epic. A 3.3-mile gravel climb sets the tone before the long haulers whistle down a seven-mile "pedalers" descent, 3.5 of which is un-paved. The course offers some autumnal heaven along the river before spooning out a taste of hell: a 3-mile climb, most of which is unpaved, forces riders to grind out of the valley. The best of riders will be technically, aerobically and spiritually challenged. Regroup and recover at the top. The second rest stop, positioned in a classic Grange Hall converted into a fire house. From
there, a rider gets to celebrate a series of blissful ridges, eye-watering descents, scenic farmlands, a new challenging timed segment on Jeep track before dropping down to the covered bridge in West Cornwall. The final timed segment will be on the Lime Rock raceway and Rattlesnake Ridge in the opposite direction. Then come home to an amazing meal, friends and stories of the day with some cold ones.
NOTE: Epic riders are eligible for the team-based Berkshire Cup competition. (Details below)
THE EXPLORER
55 miles, 3700 ft of elevation, 14 sectors, 4 timed segments, 2 rest stops
The Explorer is comprised of the northern loop of the Epic route. The first half is fairly flat with the same gravel sectors. After the rest stop the challenging stuff really starts, with a 4.5-mile gravel step climb. This route provides riders a good taste of the Epic without suffering the agony of the Epic's descent into the infernal Kent Valley. The Explorer riders reconnect with the Epic route and enjoy the second rest stop together. Be warned, this route is truly a challenge for even an accomplished rider.
NOTE: PEDAL-ASSISTED E-BIKES ARE WELCOMED ON THE EXPLORER RIDE (but are EXCLUDED from any timed competitions).
THE EXPRESS
25 miles, 1000 ft of elevation, 5 sectors, no timed segments, lots of snack stops and clinics
The Express offers an approachable route for the "gravel curious." There are five unpaved sectors, three of which offer paved “bailouts.” The Pink Patrol, comprised of experienced ride leaders, will divide up the group based on skills and experience. While some will take on the challenging Mount Easter Loops, others may stay on the paved route for the “tap-out” option to the covered bridge. From there we will descend down to the picturesque West Cornwall Covered Bridge. There the route turns north to traverse the third unpaved sector of the ride, a flat three miles along the Housatonic River. Five miles of rolling roads with a photo stop and snacks at the Great Falls will bring you back to Lime Rock Park.
NOTE: PEDAL-ASSISTED E-BIKES ARE WELCOMED ON THE EXPRESS RIDE.
The Express will feature five unpaved sectors; approximately one fourth of the route is unpaved. There will be frequent photo stops with snacks. Riders will be timed but not scored.
THE BERKSHIRE CUP TEAM COMPETITION
There will be a team competition. To be eligible each member must register with their team affiliation. Team membership will be determined based on the 'Team/Club/Company' field during BikeReg checkout. Please ensure all team members use the same name for your team.
Rules are as follows:
There are two categories: Men and Women.
Men must have a minimum of four riders; women must have a minimum of three riders.
There is no maximum number of riders one team can have.
Only riders who enter and complete the Epic course and all five timed segments by 3 p.m. will be scored
Only the time of the fourth best rider of each men's team in each segment will be used for scoring. The aggregate of those scores will be tabulated for the team's result.
Only the time of the third best rider of each women's team in each segment will be used for scoring. The aggregate of those scores will be tabulated for the team's result.
Any combination of riders on a team can be scored. For example, a team may have different riders scored in each of the segments.
The overall individual results have no bearing on the team competition.
Only one men's and one women's team will be awarded the Berkshire Cup.
ENTRANTS TO RECEIVE
All paid entrants to the Lime Rock Park Epic will receive the following:
