Hungryland UltraAdventure!
In 2023, we proudly introduced the first 100 mile ultra to be permitted in a Palm Beach County Natural Area: the beautiful and brutal Hungryland 100 in the remote and rugged wilderness of Hungryland Slough Natural Area! This 100 miler has been a long time coming as we’ve done our due diligence through good trail stewardship, respectful treatment of the natural areas, and mirroring the mission of our race partner, Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management, by promoting and enhancing these local gems by bringing trail running to protected sites that are rich with both environmental and historical significance. Palm Beach County natural areas are essentially green spaces that have been meticulously restored through removal of non-native and invasive plant species, as well as reintroducing wildlife that had been pushed out to return these areas to their original glory. Because this is an environmentally sensitive natural area, we have an entrants capacity of just 75! If it sells out, we will go to waitlist! Don’t miss out! We changed the loop in 2024 into a 14.3 mile pseudo iron cross. It is a “true” loop with no out-and-backs, no u-turns, and no repeated sections, and we will be keeping it long-term as it is the most diverse and variable terrain and scenery of the entire Hungryland Slough Natural Area! This loop begins and ends in main parking area of Hungryland Slough but covers the entire 3,000 acre site using a network of management roads that wind through wetlands, prairies, swamps, hammocks, and pine flatwoods. NOTE: due to the unpredictable nature of this natural area, it is impossible to tell what course conditions will be like until about a week before the race, and in the case of 2024, the course went from dry to wet, and back to dry DURING the race! Hungryland Slough can range from wet and muddy to dry and dusty depending on the weather conditions leading up to the race. If you’re not up for adventure into the unknown, this might not be for you. Despite it being flat, it is a tremendously difficult race! No qualifying races necessary, but please register accordingly! * IMPORTANT! As stated above, because of the varied, unpredictable course conditions, weather conditions, and ability to service the entire race loop and support stations depending on these factors, the course is subject to change to accommodate your safety, the ability to extract runners if necessary, and supply aid stations. The number of aid stations, the locations, the contents, and the distance between them are subject to change if reroutes are necessary. You will be informed well before the race as to what current conditions are so you can be prepared accordingly.
Two Timed Choices!
You can register for either of two separate races: the Runner Gunner 6 Hour race is a great choice for speedsters or anyone who wants to get a single loop in (or two)! Think of it as a half marathon option with an extra mile - or a marathon with a couple extra miles. But as the title suggests, you only have 6 hours to traverse the entire 14.3 mile Hungryland loop or face the dreaded DNF!Or, take on the big daddy - The 33 Hour Jogger Slogger. You have 33 hours to run as many, or as few, loops as you care to. You must run a minimum of one. Your placement and ranking will be placed with other runners who ran the same number of loops as you. For instance, if you only choose to run two loops, you will be ranked with other runners who ran two loops. If you run three loops, you’ll be ranked with other runners who ran three loops. But here’s the kicker! You’ll only get credit for finished loops. If you successfully run two loops and go out for a third, but DNF on your third loop, you DNF your race. No credit will be given for your completed loops. Sucks, don’t it? You’ll want to be sure you’re feeling up to another 14.3 mile loop before you start. You may take as long between loops as you like, but the clock doesn’t stop ticking! If you start a loop late in the race and don’t get back to the start/finish before the 33 hours is up, you lose all your loops and will be listed as DNF. It’s savage, but it’s Hungryland. If you run seven loops, you will get a 100 mile buckle! But you’ll be ranked against anyone else who ran 7 loops as opposed to the 100 mile runners. You may run MORE than 7 loops! There will be a special award for runners running more than 7 loops within the 33 hour time limit in addition to the buckle! IF YOU WANT A 100 MILE FINISH AND A BUCKLE, REGISTER FOR THE 33 HOUR!
What is Hungryland?
At just over 3,000 acres, Hungryland Slough Natural Area is one of Palm Beach County’s largest natural areas. This 3,004-acre site contains a portion of the historic Hungryland Slough, which flowed to the east into the Loxahatchee Slough and to the west into the Everglades. There are eight native south Florida ecosystems on the site including flatwoods, swamps, hammocks, and prairies. It’s also a rugged and beautiful place with a rich history, though some of it mysterious and contradictory. The interior of Palm Beach County was occupied long before European settlers came to the area. Groups living within the interior would have relied on tree islands - areas with slightly raised elevation which would have provided abundant edible fruits and seeds like sea grape, as well as attracting wild game. “Hungryland” is a misnomer. Indigenous groups hunting and traveling through the area lived in a resource-rich environment and may have modified the landscape through controlled burns or even expanding the size of the tree islands, though, conversely, some groups claim living off this land during the Seminole War would have been difficult, thus giving way to the name “the hungry land”. Seminoles who fled there and took refuge after the Battle of Loxahatchee in 1838 referred to it as “hungry times.” Post war, European settlers who tried their hand at ranching and citrus farming were equally unsuccessful, so the name stuck. By the mid 20th century, developers sought to drain the area and create a residential development. Drainage canals were cut through the area in the 1960s, and by the 1970’s more than 1,300 lots were subdivided and sold to more than 900 buyers. But, a slough is essentially a wetland, and wetlands are very good at staying wet. Too wet for development, the suburbia that almost became a reality was abandoned and Mother Nature began to take over, though the grid of scars on the land that were to become streets are still visible on satellite images and still retain the street names assigned to them decades ago. Palm Beach County began acquiring the site in the mid 1990’s, filling in 12 miles of canals and removing 38 miles of roads. There are still remnants of the unnatural systems imposed on this land to inhabit it, but nature and time have slowly begun healing it and returning it to its original, wild splendor. While the work continues to this day, the progress has been tremendous. Hungryland is now thriving with native wildflowers and birds, deer, bobcat, fox, raccoons, and alligators. Long spans of pine and palm tree-lined corridors that were once to become neighborhood streets are some of the only reminders of what almost was.
Race Description
Much of Hungryland is resting and recovering, but our friends at Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management have permitted us access to use the miles of service roads and footpaths to create a 14.3 mile loop that will take you through every ecosystem Hungryland has to offer. This loop we’ve created is essentially the “grand tour” of Hungryland offering you a variety of terrains of varying degrees of difficulty. You’ll trek through pine flatwoods, open prairies, and marsh land on the network of management roads that snake their way through the entire 3,000 acre site. You’ll see swamps and open wetlands with big sky views that seem to go on forever, and lush corridors of pine and palm trees offering some shade. The loop surface is primarily double-track and will include dirt roads, hard packed grassy areas, and softer - but runnable - paths near wetlands and marsh areas. We picked March for this race for two reasons: March is beautiful in south Florida, and it’s also historically the driest month of the year for Hungryland. During the spring and summer, it fills up with water, filling the wetlands, then water levels begin to decrease during the fall and winter. March is the optimum month for this race as we expect the entire loop to be predominantly dry and runnable, though there may be wet sections, and there may dry, sandy sections. We won’t know what effects Mother Nature has bestowed onto the site until very close to race day. If wet sections become impassable, we will likely reroute. This is a flat race. There is no significant elevation gain/loss worth mentioning. This is about as flat as it gets. If you’re looking for vert, look elsewhere. The iron cross loop is ran clockwise and will have a full aid station at the start/finish, as well as the now infamous “Beeline Oasis” full air startion at mile 6.75, as well as an “abbreviated” aid station (water/ice) around mile 3, and water/ice/fuel stations around miles 8 and 11. This loop is easy to navigate and will give you a taste of everything Hungryland has to offer. You’ll never go more than 3-4 miles without aid of some sort!
Crews/Pacers/Support
This is a supported race, but be advised you will still have to carry hydration and nutrition due to length and difficulty of the course between aid. We will have 2 aid stations and 2 fluid/fuel/ice stations: one full aid station at the start/finish, one water/ice station approximately 3 miles into the loop, and a full aid station with drop bag access 7.8 miles into the loop. There will be another water/ice station at mile 10.7 of the loop to get you back to the start finish. The full aid stations will have all the ultra food fare you’d expect, as well as water, ice, and liquid nutrition. The start/finish aid station will have hot food (after dusk) like noodles, pierogies, bacon, quesadillas, grilled cheese, hot soups (nights can still get a bit nippy in March) and other goodies. * HOT FOODS/DRINKS available if there is no severe drought or burn ban in effect! Unmanned, self-serve aid stations with water, fuel, ice, and packaged snacks will be placed between manned aid stations at miles 3 and 10.7 should you need essentials along your journey. Pacers are allowed for both 100 milers and any Jogger Sloggers still running beginning at dusk on Saturday and through the night regardless of mileage achieved. 100 mile runners and Jogger Sloggers going long may also set up a small “base camp” near the start/finish to rest and recover between loops.
Refund/Deferral Policy
You may request a full refund for any reason through November 1st, 2025, minus your Ultrasignup fee. You may also opt to have your forfeited registration fee go directly to Palm Beach County’s Natural Areas Program fund as a donation made in your name, or you may choose a full deferral to the 2027 race. No refunds will be issued after November 1st no matter the circumstances. You may also transfer your registration to another person at any time. If there is a waitlist, that person would need to be on it and the transfer can only happen when/if that person’s name is next in line. If the event is cancelled for any reason such as natural disaster, pandemic, closure of the site, etc, no refunds will be issued en masse. A new date will be set and everyone will be deferred to the new date. By registering for this race, you agree to and accept these terms.

The 2026 Christmas Edition!
The 2026 Sand Spur will be a Christmas-themed extravaganza complete with holiday treats and goodies at the aid stations, Christmas themed awards, and oodles of sparking white sand you can pretend is snow as you grit your way through one of the prettiest and challenging trail races in Florida! Wear your most festive running gear as we celebrate 10 years of fun in the sandbox!
3 distances to choose from!
We’re going to make picking your distance easy this year as we offer our original 50k, the popular half marathon, or the 30k night race! The 50k is 7 loops on our 4.5 mile course and starts at 7 a.m. with a 9 hour cutoff. You’ll get around 1,400 feet of elevation gain using every permissible trail in Jupiter Ridge including the iconic Trident dunes and the sand pine Tunnel of Love. You’ll also get a clear view of the Intracoastal Waterway with each loop! The half marathon uses the same course with only 3 loops, and the start time is 9 a.m. with a 5 hour cutoff and approximately 600 feet of elevation gain/loss. The 30k night race is 4 loops and starts at 6 p.m. with a relaxed 6 hour cutoff. You’ll have until the clock strikes midnight to finish your race!
Run the ancient dunes!
The story of this ultramarathon began during the last ice ages. On the Florida peninsula, sandy hilltop island and coastal dune ridges were the only lands peeking above sea level over 2 million years ago. Then the seas fell, leaving the flat, broad finger of land we now know as Florida. These ancient sand dunes are known as one of the rarest living communities: Florida Scrub.Jupiter Ridge Natural Area is one of the last stands of Florida Scrub habitat in Palm Beach County. Only 2% of original Scrub in the county and less than one-third of the original Scrub in the state remain today. A gently rolling landscape of prickly, dense thickets spotted with bare patches of sparkling white sand, these 270 acres are protected by Palm Beach County as part of a countywide system of natural areas. Over 200 species of plants and animals call this home. Lightheartedly called “ the Death Valley of Palm Beach County”, in fact, this natural area is full of life with an amazing variety of plant and animal species - some found to exist nowhere else in the state. The Scrub habitat of Jupiter Ridge Natural Area is among the harshest environments, and the slowest to regenerate if damaged. It’s also some of the oldest living stands of Florida landscape; you’ll be running on ancient sand dunes millions of years old. It’s for this reason we have a runner cap of 80 runners this year. We are continually working with Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management to bring this race to fruition while preserving the integrity, and protection, of the natural area. Jupiter Ridge Sand Spur was the first and only outside entity to be permitted a running event in a Palm Beach County natural area with our 2017 inaugural race. We are tremendously proud of that, and will continue to work closely with them to ensure responsible execution and growth of this race. These natural areas are managed by the Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management team, and we are tremendously fortunate to be working with them to make this race a reality.
What so special about this race?
Now in our 10th year, we’ve enjoyed sold out races from the beginning thanks in part to our small entrants cap and high demand for Winter ultras in Florida. We have been able to welcome folks from all over the US, Canada, and overseas to introduce them to one of Florida’s hidden treasures; the Florida Coastal Scrub. Why is the entrants cap small? Why just 80 participants this year? From its inception, we’ve worked diligently with Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management to bring competitive trail running to the Natural Area setting. Our inaugural year was a “test” year of 20 lucky participants for our 50K. The process was closely monitored by the county before, during, and after the race to determine the effects of trail running impacts on environmentally sensitive grounds. We are proud to say we’ve been able to boost our numbers through the care of our runners who share our vision of appreciation and promotion of these amazing lands. Jupiter Ridge Natural Area is a coastal scrub environment, one of the rarest and slowest to rebound if damaged. It is home to 31 plant species and 14 animal species considered to be threatened, rare, or of special concern. Though it looks like a bit like a piece of Death Valley dropped into Palm Beach, it is in fact teaming with life. This 270 acre site, wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, is also home to some of the oldest living sand dunes in Florida. These dunes, also the highest natural points in Palm Beach County, have remained largely unchanged for over 2 million years. What makes this race so special is the both the rarity and beauty of it. Then add the challenge of the sand and the dunes, and it’s absolutely magical. Despite its challenge, it makes a great first ultra with a relatively small loop of just shy of approximately 4.5 miles!Make no mistake; this is not an easy race. It’s a race to train specifically for and to respect the course. The sand can be deep and brutal at times, but the course has been designed carefully and thoughtfully to offer sections of respite. Just when you think you can’t possibly run in sand for one second longer, you’ll be treated to a firm area for a bit of rest. We’d love to welcome you to sunny Jupiter Florida for our 10th installment of our flagship race! It fills up quickly, so don’t dilly-dally if you think you want to run it!
New, EZ Refund Policy!
Register with confidence! You are entitled to a FULL refund, minus the Ultrasignup fee, for any reason, until October 1st, 2026. Or a partial refund during October through November (to be determined based on when you cancel within the month of November) because we will then be spending your money on swag and supplies. Or a full race credit (rollover, deferral, etc) with no expiration date and totally transferable if you cancel on or after December 1st, 2026. You can also choose to submit your forfeited race fee as a donation to the Palm Beach County Natural Areas Program! We’ll work with you! *If the event is canceled or postponed due to natural disaster, pandemic, site closure, dogs and cats falling from the sky, etc, we will roll everyone over into the new date should that happen.
South Florida Elevation?
Florida is notoriously flat, and south Florida is about as flat as it gets. Runners have to resort to bridge repeats, landfills, and stairs to get any decent elevation training. Jupiter Ridge Natural Area is home to some of the tallest natural sand dunes in Palm Beach County, and one “peak” in particular is the highest natural point in the county! Affectionately called Mount Ridge, a massive dune stands a jaw-dropping 49 feet above sea level! You’ll summit Mt. Ridge twice per loop from four different directions, and that combined with the other smaller dunes and rollers, you’ll get about 1,400 feet of gain for the 50K, and 600 feet for the half marathon! We are proud to be the only ultramarathon in south Florida to boast such “lofty” numbers!
Awards galore!
This is one of the swaggiest trail ultra around! Every finisher gets a badass finishers medal, and top overall winners receive our coveted custom-made hourglasses to pay homage to your battle against sand and time! You can expect the amazing Brie from Wicked Skins to, once again, raise the bar with the creativity and craftsmanship of our awards for both every finisher, and exclusive awards for top finishers and DFL’ers!
Other deets!
Drop downs: drop downs will not be allowed on race day, or during the race. If you wish to drop down, or drop up, you’ll need to join that distance’s waitlist, so essentially you either finish or DNF the distance you decide on, as distance changes are incredibly unlikely as the race draws near. Refunds: your registration fee goes toward putting on a remarkable race with tons of cool stuff. We begin this process early on. We also strive to make a considerable donation to Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management’s Natural Areas program which helps maintain these amazing places. Your registration fee is 100% refundable (minus the Ultrasignup fee) by October 1st. After that, we will allow you to roll your registration over to next year’s event, or transfer it to one of our other races such as The Trident or Hungryland! Or, you can let us know you’d like it to be a donation to PBCERM and we’ll donate it to the Natural Areas program! If the race is canceled due to site closure, natural disaster, pandemic, wildfires, monkeys falling from the sky, etc - mass refunds will not be made available. Instead, a new date and/or race location will be announced and all participants will be moved to the new event. By registering for this race, you agree to these terms. 100% of surplus and proceeds will go to PBCERM’s Natural Areas program. Drop bags and aid stations: the start/finish area will have a drop bag zone. You’ll be permitted one small duffle or tote, or a small cooler, if you wish. It must be clearly labeled with your name and bib number. You’ll have access to your stuff each time you finish a loop. We’ll also have two aid stations on the course: one at the start/finish, and one around the 2.25 mile mark of the loop. It’s entirely possible to complete this ultra with simply a handheld bottle. You’ll never be more than 2.25 miles from aid. This race will be professionally and accurately chip timed by the one and only Justin Radley at Trailhead Ultras!

Run the beautiful trails at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. The course is an out and back with a lollipop loop. The course will be heavily marked with reflective arrows and wrong-way signs, employing the same safety procedures we use for our ULTRA-TRAIL events, including water aid stations, experienced trail-running volunteers, and medical staff. The trail is mostly flat dirt with some sand, and roots within the Pine Wood Forest section of the park. The trail starts as double-track with some single-track trails with 2 bridge crossings. The course can be wet in some sections depending on rainfall. We can never say for sure what the Owl will bring on race day but the course can be 100% bone dry or you might have to bring your snorkels. Lol

We invite you to join us at our 18th annual North Creek Explorer 5K Run & Walk race which has been a local favorite for many years! It is one of just a few Saturday evening races in the area praised for its great atmosphere with live music and food for all. This race keeps growing with record number of runners, families and friends and we hope to see even more runners on the course this year in support of the Coconut Creek Police Explorer Program. In 2025 we were able to donate $8,000 to the Explorer Program thanks to the support of our community.
The race will start at 5PM and conclude with an awards ceremony recognizing the top 3 overall male and female runners as well as top 3 age group male and female winners. There are also awards for top male and female first responders. First 175 finishers will receive a medal.
All proceeds will directly benefit the Coconut Creek Police Department Explorer Program that supports protecting and serving our future community. The Explorers Program provides students, ages 14 – 18, actual experience and training for a career in law enforcement. Proceeds will cover costs for uniforms, equipment, trips, regional competitions and supplies. Without your help students cannot cover these costs or pursue their passion - giving back to the community. Help us meet our fundraising goal of $5,000 and give these students and our community the bright future it deserves! Show your support by signing up for the race or simply donating below.
All runners will receive a swag bag with a long sleeve dri-fit logo shirt. Race day registration and packet pick up for all runners will start at 3PM on race day.
