NOT YOUR AVERAGE BACKYARD ULTRA
Welcome to the most laid-back Backyard Ultra on this side of the Ultraverse. We have a basic format you’re probably familiar with, but also several “variations on the theme” that make this sucker a one-of-a-kind trail running experience.
The Format
Similar to other backyard races, you will run a 4 mile loop every hour until you stop. Each consecutive lap starts exactly on the hour.
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT'S DIFFERENT:
..
Double Winners
Most backyard ultras, or “last runner standing” events, are solely focused on one single winner. Well, not in our back yard! The Iron Turtle has two divisions: male and female. Runners will only be competing with others in their division, and we will crown both a male and female Last Runner Standing, or Ultimate Iron Turtle.
PR Focus
Instead of calling everyone else a DNF, we focus on personal PR’s. Run whatever distance you want, but we’re hoping many of you will use this format to try to run your longest distance ever. In fact, after you miss a cut-off, even though you will no longer be competing for Last Turtle Standing, we will still let you continue “unofficially” to reach your mileage goal. If you choose this option we will still record your overall mileage on Ultrasignup, because, who cares? You earned it. Also, all who achieve their PR will get a sexy Iron Turtle sticker (see photos).
The Squawking Chicken
Yes. He will be attending. He’s kind of like our mascot by now. He will announce the start of each lap, squawking gleefully at the top of every hour.
Finish Focus
No stress if you’re still tying your shoe or grabbing gear when the rubber chicken squawks to announce the start of the next lap – as long as you’re back off the trail before the next squawk, you’re still in.
Awards
Of course the male and female winners will get some fabulous swag. But, you’ll also get a finisher award showing your total mileage. And of course, everyone gets a cool shirt with a cool turtle on it.
The Shoot out Option
We have a shoot-out option after 12 hours. If the remaining runners agree, we will have one final 4 mile loop and the first runner back will be declared the winner. We will only trigger this format if all remaining runners agree. If just one person objects, then the regular format continues.
The Leap Frog Option
I know it's kind of crazy to bring a frog to a turtle race, but hear me out: We are also toying with the idea of having a “leap frog” or “tag team” division. Bring a running buddy. You run one loop, they run one loop, etc. This could go on for days, so if we add this division we will have some tricks up our sleeve that we can implement after the 12 hour mark to narrow the field -- we still have to go to work on Monday. Send me an email if you’re interested in this variation and we’ll see if we can pull it off.
ADDITIONAL RACE INFO
.
Park Ammenities
Beautiful Lake Lurleen offers camping, fishing, and swimming before or after the race. Also, hot showers! The park has recently been remodeled with new roads, new bathrooms, new pavilions, etc. Come check it out!
The Course
This is a well-groomed trail with minimal elevation (about 270 feet of gain per lap). The course is 95% single track, 5% paved road. The distance of the loop will be 4 miles.
Aid Stations
At the start / finish you will find a well-stocked aid station with all the usual treats and electrolytes, including lunch and dinner options for those who are in it for the long run (pun intended). This year the start / finish will be the pavilion straight in front of the main bridge. There will be plenty of room around this camping area to park, set up a tent, or use one of the surrounding pavilions for your set-up.
The Crew
We are here for you. We promise to provide an up-beat, encouraging environment to help you enjoy the event and reach your goal. We will be cranking the tunes so you can hear the finish line before you get there. We will do our best to get you what you need to keep you fueled up and staying in the game.
That's it

THERE IS NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION THERE IS NO RACE DAY REGISTRATIONRegistration on UltraSignup closes Monday, October 19th. There will be NO registration, for any distance, after 10/19. ENDLESS MILE - THE RACE Have you ever wondered just how far you could run in 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, or maybe even 48 or 72 hours on a smooth, level surface? Well, here is your chance. The Endless Mile will be held at Veterans Park in Alabaster, Alabama. The park is 26 miles south of downtown Birmingham, and 16 miles south of I-459. The address is 7305 Highway 119, Alabaster, AL 35007.The course is USATF Certified and Sanctioned. It is exactly 1.00203 miles - you can't get much closer to a mile than that! Runners will circle the paved and lighted path as many times as they can in the allotted time. The event will be electronically chip timed, instantly recording and displaying your exact distance covered.Run solo or with friends as an informal relay team. Either way, Endless Mile will be an experience
you'll never forget. Solo runners who reach 100 miles receive a beautiful 100-mile buckle. Reach 200 miles and earn the coveted 200-mile buckle! THE MULTI-DAY EXPERIENCE What's It Really Like?Running for 24, 48, or 72 hours isn't just about physical endurance—it's a journey through multiple sunrises, unexpected friendships, and discovering what you're truly capable of.The Rhythm of Multi-Day RunningAs day turns to night and back to day again, you'll find your own rhythm. The course transforms with each passing hour—misty mornings give way to blazing afternoons, peaceful starlit laps become sunrise celebrations. You'll experience the park in ways day visitors never imagine. The 3 AM Brotherhood (and Sisterhood)There's something magical about 3 AM on a multi-day race. The world shrinks to just the beam of your headlamp, the sound of footsteps, and the occasional greeting from fellow night owls. Conversations at this hour are different—more honest, more philosophical, sometimes more absurd.
You'll make friends you'll remember forever. The Mental GameAround hour 20, your brain starts negotiating. By hour 30, you're having full debates with yourself. By hour 40? You've transcended normal thought patterns entirely. This is where the real race happens—not against other runners, but with yourself. And when you keep going anyway? That's where the magic lives.Direction Changes - A Gift in DisguiseEvery 6 hours, we reverse direction on the course. What seems like a small detail becomes a major mental boost. Suddenly, you're seeing familiar faces head-on instead of from behind. The slight change in how your feet strike the pavement gives different muscles a break. It's like starting fresh without actually stopping. CHOOSE THE MARATHON OR 50K DISTANCE We've added Marathon and 50K distance options. Start anytime during the event - Thursday morning with the 72-hour runners, or any time day or night. We count your laps, nothing else. Just show up, get your HuTag, and let us know when you're
ready to start.Note: Marathon = 27 laps (27.055 miles). 50K = 31 laps (31.063 miles - exactly 29.9 feet too long!) THE LEGENDERY ENLDESS MILE AID STATION We provide REAL FOOD for 72 straight hours! Full breakfast (6-8 AM), lunch (11 AM-1 PM), and dinner (5-7 PM) every day of the race. Plus made-to-order food 24/7:• Hamburgers and cheeseburgers fresh off the grill• Nachos and quesadillas • Grilled potatoes with all kinds of toppings• Hot soup all night, every night• Pizza appearances in the evenings• Standard ultra fare: chips, cookies, candy, fruit• Tailwind, water, Coke, ginger ale, Sprite, coffee, tea, pickle juice• Popsicles when it's hot!Important: We provide real food, not gels. If you prefer gels, please bring your own.Cupless Race: Please bring your own cup(s) for cold drinks. We provide cups for hot beverages. THE COURSE The USATF-certified 1.00203-mile loop winds through Veterans Park on smooth asphalt paths, past wooded areas and several lakes. Total elevation gain per loop: about
12-15 feet. The park features real restrooms with running water, picnic areas, and playgrounds. The entire course is lighted (bring a headlamp for better visibility between lights). TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS Pace Yourself: Start slower than you think. Then slow down more. The walkers at hour 1 will still be moving at hour 47.Your Car is Your Castle: Set up a comfort zone at your vehicle - chair, cooler, changes of clothes, comfort foods. Many veterans bring lights to mark their spot at night.Create a Home-away-from-Home: Bring a Pup-up tent, or tents, chairs, a table, air mattress and sleeping bag, lights, food and drink. Create your own small “nest” along the winding course.Sleep Strategy: Some power through, some take 20-minute naps, some sleep 2-3 hours nightly. Find what works for you. Set multiple alarms!Weather: October in Alabama means everything from hot sun to cold rain. Layers are your friend. RACE TIMING We use HuTag ankle chips for all distances with backup bib chips. Over 10,000
successful reads last year! Check the TV monitor each lap to confirm your lap was recorded. We suggest wearing crew-length socks to prevent the HuTag from sitting directly on your skin. STUDENT DISCOUNT High school age and under: 50% discount with code Student-2026 RACE SHIRT CUTOFF - OCTOBER 6TH YOU MUST REGISTER BY OCTOBER 6TH to guarantee a race shirt. Please don't wait until the last minute. The HuTag is worn around your ankle with a soft neoprene strap held in place with Velcro. We suggest wearing crew
length socks to prevent the HuTag from sitting directly on your skin. We will also have timing chips on the back of the bibs. Last year we had over 10,000 reads over the 72 hours. Race start is at North Trailhead
Beginning with a short service road start, runners will quickly sort themselves before entering the single track of Blue Trail. After some rolling uphill, you will take a hard left up one of Oak Mountain's gnarliest climbs, and my favorite training hill, Outback Highway! Once summitted, good news, the most grueling stretch is behind you. But you still have 2.5 miles of rugged Alabama terrain. After the next, shorter, and gentler hill, you will crest over onto one of my favorite top-outs with boulders towards a slippery pine straw downhill. Next is a walk-worthy climb to your halfway point, your water station, and the crown of this race: King's Chair! After a quarter mile of mostly runnable trail, you will come to your second toughest, but final climb to Eagles Nest. From there, it's about a half mile of technical downhill till you get back to Red Road for a fast finish. But make sure you watch your ankles here!
So, come test your grit with the Southeast's toughest 5k. ~1,100 feet of climbing, and descending over only 3.1 miles, on Oak Mountain's rugged terrain.

Race Description The 3rd annual Kettlebell Kountdown is ON! This race is the most unique 50K in existence and is truly a one-of-a-kind competition. The format is unlike any competition you’ve ever experienced. There will be some changes at this year’s event! Mainly, the top 3 finishers in each division, male and female, will take home custom kettlebells as their reward for their efforts.- 1st Place – 20 lb custom kettlebell- 2nd Place – 15 lb custom kettlebell- 3rd Place – 10 lb custom kettlebellAre you tired of running the same old races over and over? Are you looking for a new challenge that is different than the traditional 5k, triathlon, obstacle course race, ultramarathon, etc.? Well, look no further. You have found the competition you’ve been looking for. The race consists of a one-mile loop. During each loop, the runner will carry a 20-pound kettlebell for the entire lap. Rules for carrying the kettlebell are listed below. There will be a specific time limit for the runner to
complete each one-mile loop. The next lap cannot be started until the time limit has expired for the previous lap. For example, if the time limit for a lap is 25 minutes and he/she completes the lap in 17 minutes, then the runner has the balance of the remaining time to rest until the next lap begins (8 minutes in this example). As long as the one-mile loop is completed within the time limit, the runner can continue in the competition. If, at any time, the runner fails to complete the one-mile loop within the time constraints, the runner is eliminated from the competition. Once the runner is eliminated from the competition, he/she will not be allowed back on the course for any reason. The time limits for each loop continue to decrease as the day goes on. Only those competitors that complete lap 31 will receive an official finisher’s medal. Also, only runners to finish lap 31 will be eligible for the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place custom kettlebells for each division. This event has been accurately
described as follows:- This is a one-mile race while carrying a kettlebell. The prerequisite to compete in this one-mile race is that you complete 30 previous one-mile laps carrying the kettlebell without getting eliminated. Race Course The course is a one-mile loop. The loop will be clearly marked. The total number of laps for this competition is 31 which will obviously end up being a total of 31 miles, or a 50K. There will be no time limit for the final loop, lap 31. If there are multiple runners remaining at the start of lap 31, the winner will be the runner who completes the final loop the fastest. The top 3 finishers of each division will receive a custom kettlebell as a trophy. The time limits for each lap are as follows:• Lap 1 starts at 8:00 AM - 30 minutes to complete• Lap 2 starts at 8:30 AM - 30 minutes to complete• Lap 3 starts at 9:00 AM - 29 minutes to complete• Lap 4 starts at 9:29 AM - 29 minutes to complete• Lap 5 starts at 9:58 AM - 28 minutes to complete• Lap 6 starts at
