What is RUN YOUR LUNGS OUT?
RUN YOUR LUNGS OUT is a 24-Hour Treadmill Challenge in support of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. RYLO is THE LARGEST fundraising event for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation that is put on by a 3^rd party.
Our goal is to raise money and mobilize + inspire our community to create awareness of lung cancer through physical activity. Everyone has been touched by this devasting disease and by coming together we can create positive energy and generate funds to support the research and treatment of lung cancer in Manitoba.
Run Your Lungs Out was born by two Winnipeg philanthropist community members named Jonathan Torchia and Junel Malapad who both wanted to test their personal limits, and run for 24 hours on a treadmill with a goal to complete 100 miles ( 160kms ) each and raise money for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
In its inaugural year in 2018, RUN YOUR LUNGS OUT had four treadmills occupied by 96 different runners going nonstop for 24 hours straight. Both Jonathan and Junel completed 100 miles in those 24 hours. The event was hosted inside the lululemon store at the outlet mall. In addition to our dedicated runners, we also hosted two spin classes, two yoga classes and live streamed the Winnipeg Jets playoff game – creating an electric atmosphere. Visitors to the event reached the thousands, all stopping by to cheer and support the event. At the end of 24 hours we had raised over $40,000.
In 2019, RUN YOUR LUNGS OUT took things to the next level and moved to Center Court Polo Park. We doubled our treadmills to eight, with 384 runners keeping them going for 24 hours straight in 30 minute increments. We again hosted two spin classes, and two bootcamp classes. With our new location at Centre Court Polo Park, our audience was astronomical, and we almost tripled our donations to $114,000.
In 2025 we returned to Center Court Polo Park! The event was a complete sell out and a massive success!
We saw 382 runners occupy those 8 treadmills for 24 hours straight enroute to raising $125,884 for CancerCare Manitoba Foundation! It was ELECTRIC and quite honestly, an absolute remarkable 24 hours for the participants, volunteers, and the community as whole! The event was widely covered by all media outlets, print, social, and major waves in the community were made!
Center Court was FILLED with people from start to finish! And YES, we were there for 24 hours straight!

After 20 years, race day continues to be a very special day for everyone involved. It is a day when we get to see all our hard work and amazing running community come together while raising money for a cause that is important to us all. Without fail, every single year hundreds volunteers donate countless hours of their time. To date, we have raised over 2.8 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Fundraising
The Canadian Cancer Society needs us more than ever. Cancer has not gone away. The need for a cure has not gone away either. If you are able to donate and fundraise, we hope that you will. Our race team works directly with the Canadian Cancer Society to join up with research projects where ALL donation dollars are directed to. We also choose research projects where donation dollars are dollar matched which doubles every dollar raised. It is important to us, as an event, and to you, as participants and donors to know exactly where your donation dollars are going to. Even more important is when we can see first hand the impact we have made together. Please visit www.wpshalfmarathon.ca for more information.
All other information you may need, including dates and times for kit pick-up, race day information, as well as course route information can also be found on our website www.wpshalfmarathon.ca

This event is being held in loving memory of Dr. Paul Wawryko, who passed away in December of 2023. Paul was a beloved friend, coworker, and family member to countless people and we plan to honour his memory with an annual 5K event. He was an avid runner, completing the Chicago Marathon 3 times, the Boston Marathon twice, and a half Ironman in Chattanooga. Paul was an incredibly talented and hard working runner, accomplishing the incredible feat of a sub-3 hour marathon on his first attempt, and completed all 5 of his marathons with sub-3 hour finish times. He aspired to complete the 6 global major marathons and intended to compete in the Boston Marathon annually. Seeing his loved ones commemorate him in this way would mean a lot to him.
The proceeds from the event will be used to fund an annual scholarship for the department of Pathology, where Paul worked and won a prestigious teaching award as the educator of the year. The remaining funds will be donated to various causes which were near and dear to Paul’s heart. A post-race event will be held featuring a beer created specifically for this event. We believe that an event combining fitness, camaraderie, and the outdoors is a perfect way to remember Paul, and we hope to see you all there.
