The Crooked Compass Adventure Trek is part-adventure racing, part-rogaining, and part-walk in the woods! Solos and teams of 2-4 will travel by foot, using pre-plotted, water-resistant AR-style, USGS maps as they locate as many checkpoints as possible within the time allotted. For those new to adventure racing, this is a great introductory event that will challenge and give you a taste of the sport while still being accessible and fun.The Crooked Compass is also the perfect training ground for bigger events, whether you're taking on a one-day race like our 24-hour Two Rivers Adventure Race; a stage race like our two-day Stockville; or an expedition race like our five-day Endless Mountains Adventure Race.

This race has been created to honor the memory of Raeann Rose Merlino and raise funds for the Memorial Scholarship in her name.

Raeann Rose Merlino, 10, of West Pittston, departed from this world Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, after a brief battle with the flu and RSV.

Her untimely passing has left her loved ones with unimaginable sorrow in their hearts, for she was a beacon of love that effortlessly filled one with joy.

Raeann, born to Jamie Merlino and Dawn Gazda on June 25, 2012, is remembered for her energetic, caring and strong-willed personality.

She was a fifth-grade student in the Wyoming Area School District. Twirling and giggling, Rae was constantly dancing with exceptional rhythm. Her love of dance led her to cheerleading, which became a passion and outlet for her creativity and energy. Empathetic to her core, compassion for animals, especially her canine companion, Gus, was abundant in Rae.

Raeann was always eager to help, whether at the Hughestown Fire Department, the Pittston Memorial Library or her grandparents' house. She had many friends, all of whom can agree that she made life brighter for anyone lucky enough to meet her. Water was certainly her element, and most of her summers were spent swimming with family and friends. Her freckled, smiling face was an embodiment of summer, and her shining spirit a drop of sunshine on Earth.

Q: Is there a cutoff time for the half?

A: Yes! Due to the heat, we ask runners to finish in 3:00. There is a hard cutoff of 3:15. Those who may run longer than 3:00 are encouraged to run the quarter marathon.

Q: What is the course surface like?

A: The out-and-back course on The Susquehanna Warrior Trail is flat hard-packed dirt and gravel. 90% is shaded.

Q: Are dogs allowed on the course?

A: Yes, dogs are allowed on the course. However, due to safety and insurance reasons, we discourage participants from running with their dogs. The race is on a public trail that allows dogs, so we do not ban dogs from the race. We ask that if you choose to run with your dog, you only do so if your dog has extensive experience running in groups and with strangers. According to PA state law, all dogs, whether running or spectating or just meandering through on a Saturday walk, MUST be leashed while on public property.

Q: Are strollers allowed on the course?

A: No. The trail is not well-suited for strollers.

Q: Can I see a map of the half course?

A: Yes! (And the quarter marathon is the first half the half). FOLLOW THIS LINK HERE.
