The Unforgettable Staten Island Half Marathon!

Welcome to the Inaugural Michael Hanly 5K.

Michael Hanly was a sanitation worker assigned to BK11 in Caesar’s Bay, Brooklyn in the late 1990s. While performing his regular duties, a bag containing hazardous chemicals exploded on his truck. Michael inhaled the chemicals and later passed away.

Following his death, Superintendent Saporito created a memorial race in Michael’s honor and in remembrance of other fallen DSNY members who suffered similar tragedies. The race grew over the years and ran for approximately eight years. After Superintendent Saporito retired, the race was not continued and eventually faded out.

Years later, his son, Anthony Saporito, now a Chief in the DSNY, joined the department and always hoped to bring the race back. Along with Michael Manna, President of the DSNY Running Club, they worked together to revive this meaningful event.

While the original race was held in Caesar’s Bay, Brooklyn, this year’s race will take place at Freshkills Park, offering a fresh start in the department’s own backyard.

About the Race

The Michael Hanly 5K is organized by the DSNY Running Club, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, and is professionally timed by Richard Re of ScoreYourRace.com.

After race expenses, all proceeds support families of sanitation workers who have experienced tragedies similar to that of Michael Hanly.

The course is well marked, super flat, and easy to manage so get ready to post your fastest time ever. Get there by car, bike, foot, subway, or bus. Support stations will be available at every 1.5 miles with water, Gatorade, and gel packs for you to "grab and go". Afterward, dig

into Brooklyn's best bagels, fruits, and drinks as we celebrate with a classy photo session and awards ceremony. Photographs and Video posted on the day of the event. The Half Marathon course consists of 3 loops, 10K - 2 loops, 5K-1 loop. Every loop will be timed in real time. Your family members will be able to track you every time you complete a loop! Start and finish are at the same point, just inside the base entrance.

Welcome to the 10th Annual SSG Michael Ollis 5K Run & Walk. Since the inaugural event, the Ollis run has grown into one of Staten Island's largest and running events. Our USTAF Certified race course serves as the first leg of the Staten Island Triple Crown. We are excited to welcome everyone back to this year's race and look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday, June 14 in New Dorp.

Triple Crown Registration:

For those runners interested in participating in the Staten Island Road Racing Triple Crown, there is a discounted registration available ($5 off each of the 3 races). The Ollis race will be the first leg, followed by the Firecracker 3-Mile Run and Michael's Cause Step for a Cure in September.

Race Packet Pick-Up:

Event participants can pick up their bibs and race packets at the SSG Michael Ollis VFW Post, located at 575 Mill Road on the following dates:

• Thursday, June 11: 3pm-8pm

• Friday, June 12: 3pm-8pm

In addition to the race packets, we will have tickets for raffles and 50/50 available. The winners will be selected following the completion of the race.

The Ollis race is organized by the SSG Michael Ollis Freedom Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, and is scored by Richard Re of ScoreYourRace.com. After payment of race expenses, all proceeds are used by the Ollis Freedom Foundation to provide assistance and support to combat veterans re-entering civilian life.
