In April 2014, six sore runners stood outside Surabaya City Hall with a name born from honest pain: Kendos Running Crew, drawn from the Javanese phrase Kenthol Mbledos, meaning exploding calves. A decade later, that joke has become the crew's truest statement. Today Kendos counts around 80 members, from office workers to retirees, all showing up Saturday mornings to move through Surabaya's colonial streets at dawn before the heat builds. Founders Satria, Aris, Ardi, and early member Risa set a pattern that stuck: no performance targets, no narrow membership, just runners of every level gathering for an easy pace, good company, and coffee after. Captains Azzam and Reza now steward that energy. What started as a shared attempt to survive one long run became Surabaya's most accessible crew, one Saturday ritual at a time.
