The Great Lake Plunge is Evanston's only open water swimming event. The swim consists of three events: 4K, 2K, 1K. This is a not-for-profit event which provides grants to support local water safety training and awareness This is a unique, family friendly event that will leave an impression for years to come. The racecourse is a 1K GPS buoyed rectangle. Swimmers will start at the southwest corner and be directed clockwise, first heading northwest, then turning northeast before returning southeast and finally southwest, back to the starting area. Buoys will be placed at the corners and halfway points.
The 1K swimmers swim 1 loop, 2K swimmers 2 loops, and 4K swimmers 4 loops.

- Participation requires an American Bicycle Racing (ABR) membership (annual or single-day). Purchase and sign the waiver here:

- Race-day/on-site registration is available for an additional $10 fee.
Race Schedule (times are approximate)

8:00am – Volunteers and Recumbents

9:00am – Men Cat 4-5

10:00am – Juniors (boys and girls) (5 laps for juniors under age 10)

11:00am – Women (all age groups and categories)

12:30pm – Men age groups 60 and above

2:30pm – Men Cat 1-2 and Cat 3
Start times will be emailed to participants after online registration closes on August 6.
Back for 2026: Road Bike Category

Choose between a Time Trial (TT) Bike or Road Bike for all categories.

Road Bike Definition:
-
Drop or straight handlebars permitted.
-
No tri-bars, clip-on bars, or Spinaci bars allowed.
-
No disc wheels; both wheels must have at least 12 spokes.
-
Maximum rim depth: 90mm.

Purpose: Encourages broader participation by leveling the playing field for racers without TT bikes. If your bike qualifies for a road race or criterium, it’s eligible here.
- Note: For this Track event, you can ride a fixed gear track bike. If it has aero bars and wheels, you should enter the TT Bike category. If it's just the basic track bike, you should enter the Road Bike category.

Parking: Plenty of parking is available in the lot outside of Velodrome.

Course Description: The race will be 10 laps (about 4K) on the famous Ed Rudolph Velodrome, a banked 383-meter track. Racers will go two at a time, starting on opposite sides of the track in “pursuit” format.
Safety & Guidelines

The course is closed to traffic — only two riders will race at a time and is very smooth. This is a great event to give time trialing a shot.

We invite youth between the ages of 5 and 14 to join us at the North Shore Youth Triathlon (NSYT). The NSYT challenges youth to develop fitness and achieve their personal best while having fun!
The NSYT is hosted by the not-for-profit Evanston-based OWLS (Open Water Lake Swimmers) and draws on over fifteen years of experience inspiring youth through triathlon.
The event is held at Evanston Township High School. This includes a pool swim, closed to traffic bike course, and run on ETHS grounds.
Event Distances:
11-14 year old: Swim 200 yards, Bike 5 miles, Run 1.2 miles
7-10 year old: swim 100 yard, Bike 2.5 miles, Run 0.7 miles
5-6 year old splash & dash: swim flexible based on skill and comfort level, Run 0.5 mile

*If your child would like to race in a different age category than their current age for any reason (Ex: shorter or longer swim), please register them for their current age group and then email [email protected] so we can make the change for you.

Both packet pickups will be located at ETHS in the grassy area near the pool entrance off of Dodge Avenue, north of Door 1.
