The Matt Mason “Cowboy UP!” Triathlon/Duathlon has been established to honor, pay tribute, support and celebrate the lives of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. This triathlon is our way to stay close to our dear friend, Matt Mason, and keep his memory alive while focusing on supporting others like him and their families.
Race Distances:
Short Course Distance Duathlon is a 1.5 mile run (shotgun start), 11 mile bike course (2 laps), and a 5K run (mostly flat, out and back course).
Short Course Distance Triathlon is a 500 meter swim (time trial start), 11 mile bike course (2 laps), and a 5K run (mostly flat, out and back course).
Long Course Distance Triathlon is a 1,000 meter swim (time trial start), 18.8 mile bike course (4 laps), and a 10K run (mostly flat, out and back course).
Race Day Info:
Sunday, July 27, 2025
5:00am – Gates Open
5:15am – Transition/Body Marking Opens
6:15am – Swim Warmup Open
**6:30am – Park Gates/Roads Close
6:45am – Transition Closes
6:45 to 7:00am – Opening Ceremonies
7:00am – Race Starts (Long Course athletes in the water first)
10:30am (approx.) – Awards Ceremony and Raffle Winners
**Park roads will be closed until last biker is off the course
Transition:
Transition opens at 5:15am. All athletes will be body marked. Volunteers will be outside the transition entrance ready to help all athletes as they enter.
Swim Start:
Swim warmup opens at 6:15am. Transition closes at 6:45am and all athletes need to exit the area by that time. Race begins at 7am and long course athletes will enter the water first, followed by short course athletes. The swim course is clockwise, and the start will be a time trial start where athletes enter the water approximately every three seconds. You will see minute marker signs for both short and long course – athletes should place themselves in line according to the swim time that is most comfortable.
Duathlon Start:
Duathlon will shotgun start on the run path to the right of the beach away from the finish line at the same time the short course triathlon swim starts.
Bike Course:
Please keep in mind that there is an incline as you exit transition – please set your bike gears accordingly. After you exit transition, it is approximately 1.6 miles to exit the park and reach Highway E. At this point, you will need to count your loops around the course. Short Course will do 2 loops and Long Course will do 4 loops. There will be a timing box on the bike course for accuracy. A bike course map will be included in your packet.
Aid Stations:
There will be water stations along the run course. Short course athletes will pass 2 water stations and Long course athletes will pass 5 water stations.
Awards:
Age group and overall awards will be given for Men and Women for both the Short Course and Long Course Triathlon and Duathlon. The awards ceremony will be held near the finish line after the race.

• Series registration does not include entry into the individual races

Complete all three events to earn series recognition and exclusive series swag while becoming part of a community that celebrates perseverance, sportsmanship, and Midwest pride.

Athletes participating in the series must register for each race individually. Registration for the series does not include entry into the individual races, and athletes are responsible for completing separate registrations for all series events.

Join local Kansas City USAT and Ironman coaches for a one-of-a-kind clinic that will prepare you to conquer the dam hill on August 2nd. The clinic will cover all aspects of the Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon with a short open water swim session, riding the bike course, running the run course, and opportunities to work on transitions.
All participants need to bring their own tow buoy in order to participate in the open water swim portion of the clinic.

There are seven days in a week and “someday” isn’t one of them. Make the commitment to become a triathlete or duathlete today! The Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon takes athletes throughout the most visited park in the state that serves as a 1,250-acre urban refuge. Additionally, the course joins the Mill Creek Streamway Trail offering asphalt pathways snaking along the stream and through hillside forests. With five different events including relays, there is something for every athlete ranging in experience from first timer to the seasoned veteran. The Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon is featured as the USA Triathlon Kansas State Championship event with the top 35% of finishers in the Short Course and Olympic Triathlons qualifying for USA Triathlon Nationals.
COURSE OPTIONS
Triathlon - Olympic
1500 meter swim, 27 mile bike (6 laps), and a 6.1 mile run
Triathlon - Long
1000 meter swim, 18 mile bike (4 laps), and 4.68 mile run
Triathlon - Short
500 meter swim, 9 mile bike (2 laps), and 3.1 mile run
Triathlon - Super Sprint (athletes 11 and older)
200 meter swim, 4.5 mile bike (1 lap), and 2.25 mile run
Duathlon
3.1 mile run, 13.5 mile bike (3 laps), 3.1 mile run
The duathlon race begins on the main park road near the check-in tent. The run segments will take place on the main park road and the Mill Creek Streamway Trail. The first run course will be in a loop going in a counterclockwise direction, and the second run course will be the same loop but in a clockwise direction. The bike segment will consist of three laps around the park on the main park road.
USAT-Sanctioned Para Friendly Race
The Shawnee Mission Triathlon & Duathlon has again been designated by the USA Triathlon Paratriathlon Committee as “Paratriathlon Friendly”. Athletes wishing to race in this division will register under "Individual Adaptive Open Division".

Athena and Clydesdale Categories
The triathlon races in this event hosts Athena divisions for women and Clydesdale divisions for men. The minimum weight for men is 220 pounds and for women is 165 pounds. The age categories for these divisions for men and women will be 39 years of age and under, and 40 years of age and over. Participants are not eligible to compete in these divisions and in an age group division at the same event.

They're always on the move anyway, why not make it official? Join one of the fastest growing and confidence boosting kid's sports in the country by challenging them to become triathletes! This youth triathlon is specifically designed to let the kids be the stars of the show. Athletes aged 14 years and younger will compete in individual age groups in this race that is truly an event for all abilities.
Please note that this a USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Athletes will need to register in the race that corresponds with their age as of 12/31 of the current year.

Tots Triathlon: Ages 5 & Under
25 meter splash/0.15 mile bike/0.20 mile run
The swim will be a “splash” in the lake (Athletes are allowed to wear flotation devices).
The bike will take place on a paved trail near transition.
The run will be a short out and back on a paved trail.
*Parents must accompany athletes registered in this category on the entire course.
Super Sprint Triathlon: Ages 6-8
50 meter swim/1.6 mile bike/1 mile run
The swim will be inside the swim beach area with buoys/ropes on the right and life safety staff on the left
The bike will be inside Kill Creek Park on completely closed roads - athletes will complete 1 lap on the bike
Sprint Triathlon: Ages 9-10
100 meter swim/3.2 mile bike/1 mile run
The swim will be inside the swim beach area with buoys/ropes on the right and life safety staff on the left
The bike will be inside Kill Creek Park on completely closed roads - athletes will complete 2 laps on the bike
Long Triathlon: Ages 11-14
200 meter swim/4.8 mile bike/2 mile run
The swim will be inside the swim beach area with buoys/ropes on the right and life safety staff on the left. Athletes will run from east to west on the beach at the beginning of the swim and in between the first and second laps of the swim
The bike will be inside Kill Creek Park on completely closed roads - athletes will complete 3 laps on the bike

Packet pickup for this event will take place on the following days/times:
Friday, August 7th from 10am-6pm at Elite Cycling in Overland Park
Saturday, August 8th from 530-10am at the Kill Creek Park beach house. *Please note, this option is only available to those already racing the adult triathlon. Do not make a special trip to the park during this time if you are not racing the adult race.
Sunday, August 9th from 6-8am at the Kill Creek Park beach house 11670 Homestead Lane Olathe, KS 66061 (event site)
