Bascom Lodge on Mt Greylock Summit
Doug Jansen's Account:
The Mt Greylock Hill Climb TT begins at the Heritage State Park entrance on Furnace Bypass. A few seconds after starting, a sharp hook to the left is taken on Reservoir Rd. This will climb earnestly for the next 0.8 miles, one of the steeper segments of the hill climb at about 9% average grade. Avoid the temptation of going out too hard here. When the steepness levels off, get ready for some rollers. You will need all of your gears on the next 1.3 miles of the climb. Stronger riders running compact cranks may spin out on the initial downhill. About 2.1 miles into the hill climb, Reservoir Rd will turn sharply to the right, and the grade will kick up again. You will quickly enter Mt Greylock Reservation on the recently reconstructed Notch Rd, which will take you all the way to the summit. Get ready to dig in. The next three miles will average 9% grade with some sections easily over 10% grade. This part of the climb is densely forested, which is nice if it is a warm day. At mile 5.4, the
grade relaxes again, and most of the hard work is done. Don't breathe easy yet. This is a time-trial. Resist the urge to let up on power when the grade becomes less strenuous by going faster, not easier. The last 3.5 miles of the climb average about 6% grade with some fairly flat sections and a few punchy steep bits. Some gorgeous views of the valley are reassuring that all that hard work is paying off in vertical gain. About 0.8 miles from the finish, a left is taken at the three-way intersection to access the summit. This piece of road will wrap around the peak in cartoon fashion at a persistent 8% grade. The view of Adams almost straight down below is incredible. Note the several pedestrian rumble strips during your climb. If you are riding back down after the race, you will want to avoid them. The finish can't come soon enough after you've full circled the peak to reach the monument at the top. Once you've regained clarity of thought, walk over to the monument and to the ledge on the
other side. You've just biked to the highest point in Massachusetts, and it is one of the grandest views in the state. It might be worth tossing an inexpensive camera in your drop bag sent to the summit.
Free to Run
The Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service (BURCS) is excited to present 2026's Free to Run Trail Races! This race supports Free to Run, Inc., an organization whose is to enable women and girls to safely and boldly engage in outdoor activity in conflict-affected regions. Through a combination of sports programs, life skills development, and community outreach, they help women to reclaim public spaces and work to change views about the roles that women can (and should!) play in a society. Their programs are designed to develop community leaders who can bring people together across cultural, ethnic and religious lines. They work to provide our participants with the tools to succeed because they can and will be a force for positive change.
The Basics
Date: September 12, 2026 - back to the fall this year!Distances: 50k - 25k - 15k - 5 mileStart Times: 50k: 8:00 AM. 25k and 15k: 9:00 AM. 5 miler; 9:30AM.Location: Pittsfield State Forest, Pittsfield MA.Course: This is BURCS' "hard" race! The course features long climbs, fast descents, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the county. We are stoked to share the wonderful Pittsfield State Forest with our running friends. Race options for 2026 include a 50k ultramarathon, a 25k, a 15k, and new for 2026 - a 5 mile option. All distances are approximate; if I'm being honest.. you're probably going to get a little bit of a bonus. The race course is designed as a double-loop/figure 8, combining for approximately 15.5 miles and 3000 feet of vertical gain. A few SLIGHT tweaks to the course for 2026, but we're keeping all the best bits. The "Big Loop" is ~10.5 miles, and consists of climbs to Pine Mountain, Tower Mountain, and Berry Hill. This loop features several breathtaking vistas, a fun section along the Taconic Crest Trail, and a fast, winding descent back to the start/finish line. The "Little Loop" is a little bit shorter than last year, now about 5.5 miles long. It still begins with an ascent up the gorgeous Lulu Brook trail, and then makes its way back down via a fast, windy descent to the start-finish line.50k runners will complete both the "Big Loop" and the "Little Loop" two times. 25k runners will do each loop onces. 15k runners will do the "Big Loop" once; 5 mile runners will do the "Little Loop". They're all great!Cutoffs: 50k must be completed within twelve hours (by 8:00 PM) for an official finish. One hard cutoff, the last "small loop" must be started by 6:00 PM (ten hours). Aid Stations: THREE aid stations this year! With all of your favorite aid station staples, plus perhaps a few surprises! This is designed to be a challenging race and the expectation is that runners will carry water and some calories with them on the course. Awards and Shirts: Each finisher will receive a finishers award. All runners who register prior to September 1st will receive a shirt; runners who register after that date will receive a shirt on a best-efforts basis. Pricing: We're keeping pricing the same as in prior years. If you're looking to save a couple of dollars - or if you already own WAY too many race shirts as it is - use the "NOSHIRT" code at checkout and we'll take $20 off your total. Camping: There are multiple campsites in Pittsfield State Forest complete with showers and bathrooms. Runners are responsible for booking their own campsites with Pittsfield State ForestWe reserve the right to convert this to a virtual event, should we be unable to secure race permits or if state or local officials prohibit our ability to hold this as an in-person event. Because we donate profits to charities, we do not offer refunds or deferrals, with the exception of pregnancy deferrals. If you can not make it to the event, please consider your registration a donation.

The Ride-to-Remember XV promises to again, be the best Charity Bicycle Ride in New England!
This year we are dedicating the R2R to the heroes of the 9-11 tragedy. This year will be the 25th Anniversary of 9-1,1 and we will be stopping at three 9-11 Memorials.
We will be starting again this year from Main & Boland Way in the middle of downtown Springfield. We will be escorted by 35 Police Officers on motorcycles. The group of riders will stay together in one big peloton, you'll never have to clip out of your pedals till we reach our rest-stops. Speaking of rest-stops … Our first official rest-stop will be the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT. They are rolling out the red carpet for us with a 911 theme.
There are three amazing rest stops along our scenic, New England, 75 mile route. Bike mechanics following us, if you get a flat, we fix it in minutes free of charge. You will be fed breakfast, lunch andf dinner. There is a huge after-party immediatley following the ride at Tower Square in downtown Springfield. We will have a great headlining band to dance and celebrate after you shower, steam, or sauna right inside Tower Square. If you're sore during the ride, we have licesnsed masseueses at the rest stops.
You will be provided with a link to order your Official Ride-to-Remember Bicycle Jersey soon.
We take care of you the entire day … From free parking, bike support, awesome swag, food, hydration and an amazing route! After this ride you will thank the organizers for a very memorable day.
The Cross-Connecticut Run for Mental Health Awareness Lace up your shoes for the 8th annual Cross-Connecticut Run for Mental Health Awareness (CCR)! In this group running challenge, you will traverse the state of Connecticut north to south along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail (FCT). This is a fundraiser for Mental Health Connecticut. The CCR will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, starting at 5:00 am. The course The route begins at the northern end of the FCT in West Suffield, CT and follows the FCT for roughly 56 miles to its terminus on the harbor in New Haven, CT, leading runners through rural, suburban, and urban centers through the state. The course is scenic and flat — very flat — the entire way. Fundraising There is no event fee to participate, however, all runners are asked to make a donation to, or raise donations for Mental Health Connecticut. Here is the link for setting up your personal fund raising page:
https://secure.givelively.org/donate/mental-health-connecticut-inc/the-2026-cross-connecticut-run-for-mental-health?utm_campaign=share_button&utm_medium=organic_social&utm_source=copylink&utm_content=campaign_page How about a $56 donation- a buck for every mile! It's got a nice ring to it, and you'll be helping others. Why participate This is not a race. We organize this event to give runners the opportunity to support some of the more important things in life: physical activity and wellness, helping others, and the chance to run across an entire state (pretty cool and a bonus perk of being in one of our country’s smallest states). Course support This trek, while epic, is unsupported. All runners will be sent a digital map with mile markers that correspond to convenience stores and other stops along the route, should they need to refuel or use a restroom. We will have several very basic aid stations along the way set up by volunteers, all of which will operating with an eye towards safety
first. Please bring your own cup and know that we won't have the smorgasbords you've seen at other events. We'll do our best to let you know where the aid stations will be if/when saintly volunteers tell us, however we can not guarantee how long the stations will be staffed. If you are planning to set a course record of some sort, you may get to planned aid spots before people can set up- you've been warned. Runners are encouraged to have a crew or work together to set up a group crew. This event requires a bit more self-support than an official race…because it’s not a race. Requirements All runners must be confident in their abilities to make this 56-ish mile journey on foot and on their own. There is a hard cut-off of 14 hours to complete this run, which comes out to about a 15 minutes/mile pace- on a completely flat, paved course with minimal disruptions and negative elevation. Runners who are not at the southern-most end of the Stop & Shop Plaza in Hamden (approx. mile 50) by 12 hours
(5:00pm) will be pulled. This is a safety issue, period. This is an end-to-end journey, so all runners must arrange for transportation to the start at the border by Southwick, MA, (parking lot/meet-up spot in West Suffield, CT), and from the end in New Haven, CT. Event organizers will do their best to facilitate ride sharing if possible, but that will NOT be done on the day of the event. All runners must have a headlamp, spare batteries, and some form of hydration. Please note that runners are responsible for their own health, safety and wellbeing during this trek. All runners are required to have a back-up plan, including for emergencies, medical issues and injuries, and for the unlikely event that you have to drop out. Please have someone reliable on standby, though there’s also always Uber or Lyft (hopefully, though may be limited). Should a runner need to stop early and drop out, said runner is responsible for his/her own transportation. Bring a cell phone and backup charger, please.
Finishers All finishers will earn unique bragging rights when they arrive back at work on Monday. When you’re asked the question, “Hey, what’d you do this weekend?” while filling up at the Keurig, you can respond with something that will no doubt impress: “I ran across the state of Connecticut and raised money for mental health awareness. What’d you do?” If we can score some donations or funds for swag, we'll let you know! Event's current local time: 4:25 AM ET
