The Swamp Fox Ultra About The Race *Welcome to the Swamp Fox Ultra presented by The Foot Store under management of Palmetto Ultras! Embark on a truly unparalleled trail racing experience, as our event is the only trail race (that we know of at least) that spans across the entire Francis Marion National Forest. While I do love a good looped course with the convenience of having gear and nutrition close at hand (and we offer a few of those), this race demands a bit more strategic planning to ensure you're well-equipped throughout. The reward? You'll run through 52 miles of breathtaking lowcountry trails before heading back to the start/finish line if you've decided to tackle the 100 mile distance. And even though you're heading back on the same trail, once the sun sets the trail takes on a whole new feel. 50 mile, 50k, Half Marathon, and 10k runners will also run an out and back---no loops or repeated out and backs. This allows you to see more of the trails and provides an added element of
adventure as you'll need to strategically plan what you're carrying with you.Undertaking an adventure like this requires support, and in that spirit, we've bid farewell to only having drop bags in favor of strategically placed aid stations. My goal is simple: to see every participant cross the finish line, and I'm committed to providing the necessary support to make that happen. So, lace up your shoes, embrace the challenge, and let's make this an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Francis Marion National Forest.**You can still have drop bags at the aid stations. We will get them out to the aid stations and bring them back to the start/finish as aid stations close. You can either 1) go out to the aid station and get your bag if you need it back after the race or 2) pick it up at the start/finish line if you need it back. More details are in the runner guide**Women signing up for the 50 and 100 mile distances---once you register, email me for a half off discount code that you can
share with another female runner as part of our Trailblazers program in an effort to get more women doing these longer distances!Youth Runners: email [email protected] for a 15% discount code for runners who are 14 years old or younger...we want the whole family to come out to the race! Our race is TRAIL SISTERS & ATRA approved! Check out the Runner Guide HerePer our insurance policy--dogs are not allowed on the course during the race Packet Pickup & Pre Race Fun Packet Pickup will (likely) take place on Friday, March 5th from 11a-6p at The Foot Store in Mount Pleasant. It's highly encouraged to pick your packet up the day before to make your race morning easier. Plus you can stock up on any last minute gear or nutrition and support one of our sponsors while you're at it! We will also have packet pick up at the start/finish line on the morning of the race from 6-630am100 milers will also have their required gear checked from 6-630am at the start/finish line regardless if they picked
up their packet the day beforeThe Foot Store1909 N Hwy 17Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 Aid Stations There will be 4 aid stations + 3 water drops located along the 52 mile out and back course. Because it's an out and back you'll hit each aid station on your course (except the turnaround) twice. Exact locations can be found in the Runner Guide (linked above). It is very important that you are familiar with distances between aid stations so that you are carrying enough nutrition/hydration. If you are running the 100 miler---your longest stretch without aid is around 11 miles and if you are going the minimum pace to make cutoffs---that would take you around 4 hours. This is how you should plan out fuel and hydration for each section. Think about how long it will take you to complete it (plan to add some extra time in case things go south) and determine how much water and food and what gear you will need. Water drops should only be used to get enough water to take you to the next aid station. Please
note that for the half marathon distance there are no aid stations but there will be a water drop at the half marathon turnaround (we will drop cases of bottled water there). Aid stations will be fully stocked with all your favorite ultra snacks like chips, candy, pretzels, cookies, potatoes, water, Skratch hydration mix, and sodas .As the race moves into the afternoon we'll have some heavier options (quesadillas, pizza, etc.. for our 50mi/100mi runners). Sandwiches & bean roll ups will also be available at all aid stations throughout the day. At the start/finish line we will also be serving up some hot food throughout the race! Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast/Lunch on Sunday. Menu TBDRunners and volunteers eat for free. If anyone joining you would like a meal you can add that on when you register for $5/meal. If you'd like to have drop bags at the aid stations you can. We will gather them at the start/finish line and transport them to the appropriate aid station. More
details can be found in the runner guide. Coordinates for each aid station will be in the Runners Guide All of the aid stations will have a porta potty**Please note that our races have gone cupless in an effort to create less waste from these races! You will get a reusable collapsible cup in your bag at packet pick up. Plan on bringing that, bottles, bladder, etc.. that you can refill out on the course. There will be no cups available at the aid stations** Swamp Series The Swamp Fox Ultra is part of our Swamp Series that includes all 3 of our races that take place in the Francis Marion Forest! New for 2026 here's how it works:-Run any distance at all 3 races (Frozen, Swamp Fox, and Hell Hole)-Whoever accumulates the most miles at all 3 races will be crowned King/Queen of the swamp (there will be male and female winners)-If there is a tie for distance---we will award the crown to the male/female who completed the most miles in the fastest timeWhen you register for all 3 races be sure to
select "swamp series" on the page with additional questions Course Overview/Crew/Pacers We are SO excited to be able to use both the Awendaw and Swamp Fox Passages of the Palmetto Trail which will take you across the entire Francis Marion National Forest for those of you who plan to tackle the 100 miler. You'll start in McClellanville at Buck Hall Recreation Area (look for the overflow parking area and head to the very back) and run out your designated distance and then turn around and head back to the start/finish line. 100 milers will run out to the other end of the Swamp Fox Passage on Highway 52 in Moncks Corner and then turn around and head back to the start/finish line. We don't know of any other trail run that traverses across the entire distance of the Francis Marion National Forest! Tackling this course is a BIG accomplishment that not many people have tackled. Each distance will run out to their designated turnaround spot and head back to the start/finish line. The turnarounds for
each distance will be clearly marked. The course is very flat and runnable and is your typical east coast trail with some roots. The course is mostly single/double track trails with some fire road sections and a few boardwalks. The trail is mostly shaded except for a few sections and the fire roads. You are running in the lowcountry which means there may be some water on the course depending on what the weather looks like in the days leading up to the race. Boardwalks are in place to go over the spots that tend to hold water the most. The course will be marked well with flagging and signage. The Swamp Fox Trail is also marked with white blazes and once you start on that section of trail around mile 6---you will follow the white blazes and mile markers for the Swamp Fox Trail the entire time. Even though we will do our absolute best to mark the trail, it is your responsibility to know where you're going. Remember that we are not the only ones out in the woods which means there is always the
possibility of someone messing with the course markings. I **highly recommend** downloading the map to your watch/phone using an app like AllTrails that allows for offline navigation as there are some sections of the trail where service isn't great. The course GPX file will be made available in the Runners Guide.Pacers can join at the turnaround for the 100 milers and at the last aid station for the 50 milers. Crew can provide aid/drop bags/etc.. at any of the aid stations as well. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to have at least one crew member especially if you are running the 100 miler. Aid station volunteers are not responsible for driving you back to the start/finish line if you drop out any point. This is a big insurance liability to have volunteers driving runners around. Runners have suggested a shuttle but this race caps at 200 runners and the amount of DNFs that we have just don't warrant having a shuttle service. We will do our best to get you back to the start/finish but please don't
come into the race relying on that. Information concerning Civil Rights and affiliation with the Francis Marion National Forest: "In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.)The Swamp Fox Ultra is operated under special use permit with the Francis Marion National Forest. Start Times & Cutoffs 50 mile, and 100 mile will start at 7am50k and half marathon will start at 8am so that ya'll can crank up the speed and not have to worry about as much 2 way traffic on the trails. Cut off times are as follows: 100 miler: 34 hour cutoff 50 miler: 19 hour cutoff 50k: 12 hour cutoff Half Marathon: 6 hour cutoff *Please Note* that this is a trail race and that means that distances are not going to always be exact and that we all have different watches. These courses are not USATF certified. The 100 miler is
around 104 miles. I could have made it 100 exactly ish but then you would have missed out on running the entire length of the Swamp Fox trail by like 2 miles and that's just sillyThe 50 miler is around 53 miles. We need the turnaround to be somewhere that our volunteers can access so you can have an aid station with food/drinks/smiling faces which means that there's a few extra miles so that we can have the turnaround at a fire road where they can get their vehicles. Half Marathoners you get around 14 miles for the same reason---there won't be a full aid station at your turnaround point but there will be a water drop. < Tracking We are very excited to be working with Follow My Challenge USA to provide tracking for our 100 mile runners. This is included with your registration. 50 milers have the option to purchase tracking. The cost is $40 and you'll receive a small tracking device that will need to be carried on you at all times during the race. You'll also get a link that you can share
with family, friends, crew, etc.. so they can track you Gear Requirements 100 milers will be required to carry the following gear on them at all times during the race. Your gear will be checked at the start/finish line on the morning of the race. This gear is to be carried on you at all times:-PHONE with the GPX file of the course-Ability to carry 1.5L fluids-Emergency blanket-Lightweight jacket (patagonia houdini is a favorite)-Power bank-Crew is not required but is HIGHLY recommended so that if you drop somewhere out there you have someone to pick you up right away as we can't take volunteers away from the aid stations to shuttle runners around especially in the overnight hours50 milers:Anyone that leaves the Halfway Creek Aid Station (aid station 1) by or after 4pm will be required to have a head/waist lamp. My advice would be to just toss it in your pack or put it in that drop bag. It is highly recommended to carry at least 1.5L fluid when you leave any aid station (water drops should
only be used to top off and get you to the next aid station if needed) Swag & Awards Swag TBD but if you've ran our races before you know we do it right! Last year we did drop bags and those were a huge hit! Everyone who finishes the distance they registered for will get a medal!100 mile finishers will get an awesome custom made buckle as you finish your raceTop 3 male and female finishers for each distance will also get an award Night Running Those who are running the 50 miler and 100 miler are required to have some form of light on them( headlamp, waist light, flaming torch, etc..) once it gets dark out. If you don't have a light you're not running. Bring a spare, batteries, charging cables. 50 milers will be asked to show their light if leaving Halfway Creek Aid Station by/after 4pm (phone lights don't count) Cancellation & Refund Policy/ Distance Changes/Bib Transfers The race will take place rain or shine. If for any reason the event has to be shut down due to extreme weather, natural
disaster or zombies on the course (other than the runners…), you will be pulled from the course or held at an aid station until you can be removed from the course. Please, no arguing if this should happen. It is for your own safetyThere are no refunds/credits/deferrals. I know this is frustrating but we have to plan and budget for each race and just like any sporting event, concert, etc... all of our costs come before the race no matter if you show up or not. However-- Ultrasignup now offers race insurance that you can purchase when you sign up for the race. If you have any questions about this or need to redeem your race insurance policy please contact ultrasignup. If you would like to change your distance you can do that here on ultrasignup before registration closes. If you can't make the event for whatever reason you do have the option to transfer your bib to another runner via ultrasignup up to 3 days before the racePregnancy & Postpartum Deferral: We love our mother runners and we get
it---family comes first! If you find out your pregnant and don't feel comfortable running the race anymore or your post partum return to running timeline means the race is no longer feasible for you, we offer a 1 year deferral so you can come back and crush it when you're ready! You also have the option of transferring your bib to another runner right here on ultrasignup. Volunteers With our volunteer program you can earn free/discounted race entries by helping your fellow runners. If you finish your distance you could stick around and help out after. See the volunteer tab to sign up and I'll be in touch as the race gets closer. You can volunteer for as many hours as you'd like. This race will require more volunteers than any of our other races. Any help you can give to provide support at an aid station is greatly appreciated!6 hours volunteer time= 50% discount on any race entry12 hours volunteer time = 100% discount on any race entryThese hours can be accumulated over several races
Camping/Lodging Free primitive camping is available in the overflow parking area at Buck Hall (where the start/finish line is!) starting Friday at 3pm and through the duration of the race. You are welcome to set up right next to your car. Buck Hall has an actual campground just on the other side of the tree line that has RV hookups, electric, water, etc.. If you would like to book a site there you can do so on their website. There are not many sites so if you want one I would book sooner rather than later. Mount Pleasant will be the closest town with hotels (about 20 minutes away). You can also find some rentals in McClellanville and Awendaw which are even closer to the race. tell you that I personally spend a lot of time in these woods and have yet to have an encounter with most of those things. Remember that they are more scared of you and don't really want to hang out with smelly runners anyways. The course will be very well marked. The Jericho Horse Trail also uses blue blazes. We are not the only ones out in these woods which means there's always the possibility of someone messing with our course markings. I HIGHLY recommend downloading the course map to your watch/phone.
