    General info/introduction

Come join us for the 11th Annual Building Healthy Communities 5K Run/Walk & Wellness Expo. The 5K run/walk will raise funds to benefit the MUSC Children's Health Wellness Works Program. Come run or walk a USATF-certified 5K course to help us in our work of supporting healthy lifestyle habits for kids and their families. We also have a lot of exciting raffle prizes to offer, so bring cash or a card to purchase raffle tickets and participate in the drawing after the race (no checks will be accepted).

Your registration fee includes a t-shirt, a race packet with exciting freebies, water, and healthy snacks. We also offer official timing and overall/age-group awards (top three in each group)! A finisher's medal will be given to all who complete the entire 5K course. The Wellness Expo, day-of registration, and on-site packet pick-up begin at 8:00 am. A mandatory pre-race meeting is at 8:45am, group warm-up kicks off at 8:50 am, and the run/walk starts at 9:00 am. The finish-line party including food truck (food for purchase), face painting (free), Wellness Expo, prize raffle, age-group awards, and healthy snacks will follow!

You can pick up your packet (timing bib, t-shirt, freebies) on Friday, February 13th from 1:00-6:00pm at Fleet Feet West Ashley (1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd Suite 5, Charleston, SC 29407) or starting at 8:00am on event morning.

You do not have to be a paid and registered participant to enjoy the Wellness Expo and raffle--everyone is welcome. Please come and enjoy the Expo. Portable toilets will be available at the event for your convenience.

    Wellness Works Program Information

MUSC Children's Health Wellness Works program is a wellness/weight management program and lipid treatment clinic for kids and teens. We work with kids and their families to promote healthy habits through individualized clinic visits, group education sessions, and a fitness program. We have had fantastic success and we currently have over 600 families enrolled from all over the state! Since we are a non-profit program, we rely heavily on fundraising events that also promote our healthy message through exercise and health promotion.

Thank you so much for your support of these children and their families and for helping us build healthy communities! More information can be found on our website at www.MUSCKids.org/WellnessWorks and our Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/MUSCkidsWellnessWorks.

Join the community for the 11th Annual #Race4Wanza Doughnut Dash 5k in honor of TyWanza Sanders! TyWanza Sanders, a man with a philanthropic spirit and a commitment to the achievement of youth in his community and beyond, was the youngest victim of the 2015 Mother Emanuel Church Massacre. To honor his life and continue his legacy, Race 4 Achievement Inc. (R4A) created this family-friendly community run/walk (3.5 miles) to provide funds for R4A's TyWanza Sanders Scholarship Fund and other philanthropic outreach programs.

This community event is R4A's primary fundraiser, enabling us to persist in our mission of supporting the community and championing diversity within the Charleston #commUNITY. Proceeds from this event have allowed R4A to award over $30,000 worth of scholarships since the event's inception to minority high school graduates in the Charleston area. The TyWanza Sanders Scholarship Fund includes the following $1,000 scholarships TyWanza Sanders Scholarship at James Island Charter High, West Ashley High, and Burke High School, the Dan Stern Citadel Scholarship, the Malik Samir Werts Scholarship at the Charleston County School of the Arts, and the Kevin White Jr. Fort Dorchester High School Scholarship.

FAQs so you are ready to race:

    Q. Where do I park?

    A. Head to 3883 Betsy Kerrison Parkway (you'll see a big dark fence at the front of the Kiawah River neighborhood). Once you turn into the driveway, you will follow the road for 1.5 miles where you'll meet our parking attendants. We highly encourage carpooling to the race to lighten our carbon footprint. If you're traveling from Charleston or Mount Pleasant, please allow yourself plenty of driving time before the race start.

Q: Where can I pick up my race packet?

    A. You can pick up your race packet on Friday, April 24th from 10am - 6pm at Blue Sky Endurance at 624 Coleman Blvd. Mount Pleasant, SC. There will also be race day packet pickup from 7:30-8am on site at the Goatery.

    Q. Is the race chip-timed?

    A. Yes, the 5K race is chip-timed.

    Q. Are strollers welcome?

    A. The 5K terrain will require all-terrain strollers. We ask that strollers start in the back.

    Q. Are participants permitted to walk in the races?

    A. Absolutely! Walkers are welcome. The 5K course is a natural course with beautiful scenery.

    Q. Are dogs welcome?

    A. We ask that you leave dogs at home, as they do disturb the donkeys at The Goatery. Goats are chill. Donkeys, not so much. Trust us on this one!

    Q. What does registration include?

    A. 5K registration includes: Chip-timed trail run, race trucker hat, eco-friendly plants for all finishers in lieu of medals. Farm friendly prize baskets for top 3 female and top 3 male race winners and top age group winners.

    Q. How much is registration?

    A. The 5K registration is $45, price increases 4/1/25 to $55. Race day registration is $60.

    Q. What do the funds raised support?

    A. We are proud to honor the Hampton Wildlife Fund as our 2026 race beneficiary. The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, Inc. is a private, non-profit corporation which partners with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for the promotion of education, research, management and the administration of game and fish laws, which will benefit conservation of wildlife, marine and other natural resources in South Carolina. Net proceeds from the G.O.A.T. 5K support this essential local nonprofit.

Michael W Leibowitz was always on the move. A fixture in the Charleston running community, he once participated in more than 70 races in a single year! Michael traveled across the globe for a good cause, bringing family and friends with him whenever they obliged. His motto, which he routinely shared accompanied by a photo on every trek, was “If I can do it, so can you.”

Michael was tragically killed at age 71, along with his friend Christina Chung, in an accident in July 2024. His grandchildren, children, family, and friends wish to honor his memory with this annual event. Why 5.12 K? In honor of Michael’s birthday, May 12 - and because he revered being a little different with measurements. All proceeds from this memorial event will be donated to the Michael W Leibowitz Family Fund, to support the charitable causes closest to his heart. Through these efforts, Michael’s generous spirit and dedication to helping others will continue to inspire and uplift those in need. An engineer, pilot, avid runner and travel enthusiast, you can learn more about Michael here.

This event is open to people of all levels of athletic ability and will not be timed (Feel free to time yourself with your watch of course).

Due to insurance and liability concerns, we cannot allow dogs on the racecourse.

We hope you'll come out and honor Michael's legacy with us!

If you have any questions or concerns, please call Lisa 843-224-7878.
