BIKE: 21 Miles
RUN: 6 Kilometers
The Dam Tri moves into its 16th season in 2025. Voted the athlete's favorite several years during its existence, this Sprinternational distance event provides a longer distance than your typical sprint tri but doesn't expect quite as much from you as the international distance. The entire triathlon incorporates segments of the Lake Murray Dam. Starting with the 1000 meter lake swim, athletes will be comfortable with or without wetsuits as water temperature will be around 73 degrees. The swim is one large triangle starting alongside the massive spillway of the dam. Once out of the water it is a quick dash to transition and onto the 2 loop mostly flat to rolling bike course. Athletes get to cycle over the dam 4 times and experience the amazing views from atop this monumental structure. The entire run course is held on the dam with an out and back format and is unlike any other run you will experience. Don't miss this exciting event just minutes from downtown Columbia.

🦬 Be the Buffalo 🦬
Do you know why we call this the “Be the Buffalo” Race and why we are so passionate about continuing it each year?
Dianne Sullivan Wells (FiA name: Digits) was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and a well-known runner in Lexington that started the run group Running Wild that still meets to this day. Digits was tragically taken from us during one of our early morning runs in December 2018. That week the local FiA & F3 groups converged and held a prayer circle, and a friend read a story about buffalo. You see, when a storm arises buffalo gather together & face the storm head on, and because of this they get through the storm quicker compared to other animals. For us “Being the Buffalo” is herding together & facing storms together. All storms are different, and it doesn’t mean the journey is easy. It doesn’t mean the journey doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t mean the pain will end quicker. But it means that together with your people & your community, you will get through it by praying for each other, lifting each other up, helping each other. Facing it together.
A year and a half later we lost another beloved runner unexpectedly during a battle with breast cancer. Edith Edy Pearson (FiA name: Needle) was also a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, fierce runner, and our biggest cheerleader.
The Be the Buffalo 5K Memorial Run for Digits and Needle was started in honor of Digits & Needle. A way to remember them for their impact on us and to our community, for their love of running, and for their legacy to live on.
Each year a portion of the proceeds of the Be the Buffalo Race is donated to a charity close to the heart of the families of Digits & Needle. For the 2026 race, we have decided to continue to support our local community. The same community that showed up for us, that carried us through the storm.
So, if you’re a runner, sign-up to join us on Feb 7th. If you don’t run, sign up to walk with us. Or if you’re unable to do either one, you can donate to support, because one thing I know for sure is this community shows up. We face the storm together.
We are currently looking for sponsors. Please reach out if you are interested. The deadline for sponsorship is January 7th, 2026.
This race will make donations annually to the charity of choice decided by families of Digits (Dianne Wells) and Needle (Edy Pearson). The proceeds for the 2026 race will go to the family of Kathy Young. She was a secretary at Rocky Creek Elementary School, whose life was taken too soon earlier this year.
Run Hard Half Marathon, 10k and 5k will be held on November 14, 2026.
There are three event options offered. Choose a race for more details! Our courses are fully certified from the USATF.

The Sesquilizer
This is a play on the Tortoise and the Hare, where the various age and gender groups get different start times to equalize the field. The name Sesquilizer is a combination of Sesquicentennial and Equalizer.
The inspiration for this format
Basically this is not a new type of racing but it is seemingly uncommon in SC and NC. Two races that were a source of inspiration - the Dipsea race in California and the Wauhatchie race in Tennessee. And although both these races have gender and age adjustments, they couldn’t be more different in terms of the way they look and feel. And we hope to offer you a unique experience - inspired but unique.
How will it work?
The fastest young men will start last at 9:30am and that is when the race clock starts. However there are 22 start groups total and 21 of them will have already have started in 1 minute intervals. The first group to leave at 9:08am will be women 66 and up and men 74 and up. If you want to run with a friend, sibling or spouse etc you may do so but you have to run then in the time slot of the later slot.
Will it be the same year after year?
We will evaluate after each event how closely the results match the set timed starts, and then might have to tweak it a bit. It however will not be changed just because of an outlier.
The course
Here are the files of the 8.67 mile course with about 700 feet of vert. The Strava segment for some reason says 800 but it is much closer to 700. The Sesquilizer StravaAnd the Garmin file
Awards, Swag etc
Awards will be likely top 8 overall. Since the race is age and gender equalized there is no need for separate categories. Plus we will do a fun raffle so please stick around. Each starter will also get a cool t-shirt without any logos on the back. When you register you get to select your unisex size XS - XL.
Event's current local time: 5:07 AM ET
The Sand Monster 6 Hour Ultra
In the heart of Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia SC you will be able to test your endurance at The Sand Monster 6 Hour Ultra, a uniquely challenging and fulfilling 6-hour timed trail race. This event is meant for runners, hikers or walkers of all abilities. Those who aim to push their personal limits but also those who simply enjoy time on trails with fellow trail runners.
6 Hours? That seems long.
6 hours indeed sounds long but most people who start one of these timed events do not go the whole time - be it 6, 12 or 24hours. In this 6 hour case it simply means athletes have 6 hours to run, hike or walk whatever distance they might find challenging. With no threats of cutoffs or being caught by the broom wagon. Instead you will have friendly company along the way to encourage you to go further.
The 6 Hour timed race explained
Athletes will have to finish only one 3.5 mile loop for it to be counted as a finish, and thus really allowing slower athletes to enter the race without feeling they will miss a cutoff. The only cutoff is 6 hours in (at 3pm) and all laps need to be finished then. A faster runner might be able to manage 9 loops which would add up to 31.5 miles and if that runner finishes the 9th loop at 5:25:06 race time he or she might be able to go out for one more loop. If the runner returns at 5:59:55 that 10th lap will count - giving that runner 35 miles total. But should that runner not return until 6:00:13 then that 10th lap will not be counted race finish wise. But clearly that runner still did 35 miles - in the result though he / she will be shown as 9 loops with a 5:25:06 finish time. Let us assume another runner managed 5 loops in 4:55 event time, that runner can then decide to be finished as there is no pressure to run a full 6 hours. But maybe that runner wants to go out one more time since it is likely based on available time to do one more lap. Should several runners finish with the same amount of loops (be it 10, 7, or 5 loops) then the place in the results is determined by the finish order of the last completed loop.
Course description
Set on a 3.5-mile loop course with 270 feet of vert athletes will find a great mix of single track and double track. The race is called Sand Monster because one of the 2 longer climbs is sandy but really is nothing like the beach and not that difficult to run on. Most of the trails are covered with pine needles and the sand underneath them is solid. With plenty of trees lining the course there will be shade and we will make sure that it is well marked.
Runner Experience
We aim for this event to be all about the experience. From communication before, during and after the event, the supportive atmosphere on course, having enough port-o-johns, having cool awards and swag - we want to do it right. Whether you are near the front of the race, spending more time in the middle or further back you’ll find plenty of like-minded runners to share your laps with. This is actually the beauty of a timed race - there is no broom wagon to pressure you and there are really no DNFs as long as you do one 3.5 mile lap within 6 hours. We also will install either a bell at the finish for folks who will go over their previous longest distance. Plus there will be hugs and / or high fives at the finish.
Swag, awards etc
Each starter (but possibly not those who register very late) and each volunteer will get a Boco Gear technical trucker hat with our very cool Sand Monster logo. The design of these Boco Gear hats changes each year so it will be different if you already have one. Each starter will also get a very personalized bib number, plus at least one personalized inspiration card from a local 5th grader. We are working with 2 elementary schools to get this done. We added an example of such a card to our images. . We will have unique awards for the top 4 overall male and female finishers. Why 4? Because missing out on the podium spot sucks. The plan is also to have an award for the top male and female grand masters (50+). That would be 1 place each and should a grand master finish in the top 4 overall that person won’t be eligible for the grand master award. There will however be no individual age group awards, but we will have some unique other awards such as a Spirit awards, a Honey Badger award and a Far Out award. At the time we are doing the awards we will also have a raffle where we will give out some cool stuff. So stick around.
The Schedule
Sunday March 217:30am-8:30am package pickup 8:45am pre race briefing 9am start for all athletes 3pm race ends 3:20pm awards and post race raffle
