Following the incredible success of last year, we are thrilled to announce the 3rd year of The Charlie Holder Sr. Memorial Charity Race featuring the annual 5k run/fun walk and adding a 10K option. This run will begin at 7:30am on Saturday, May 9th. One step at a time we are working together to help support our community by raising money for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Community Center and the Newport County YMCA Summer Scholarship Fund.
Last year the race raised $10,000 for each organization - this year our goal is $15,000!
Thanks for helping us remember a great guy who inspired many - Charlie Holder Sr.
"I FOUGHT THE FIGHT, I FINISHED THE RACE, I KEPT THE FAITH."
This was the mantra of a Newport Legend, Charlie Holder Sr.
Charlie was born and raised in the Park Holm district of Newport. It was here that he made life long friends and first learned his love for sports. He attended Newport Public Schools and was an outstanding athlete in three sports; basketball, football and golf (captain). After graduation from Rogers in 1963, Charlie joined the U.S. Army where he became a paratrooper with the 82nd airborne division. He loved his country and was proud to serve.
Charlie returned to Newport to marry his high school sweetheart, Elaine Parkos in 1967. Together, they had three children and 6 grandchildren. Throughout his adult life, Charlie continued to play sports and coached several championship teams at the Portsmouth Abbey School. He played in the city basketball and softball leagues. He played in the over 30 basketball league until he was 51 when he was first diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. In his 40's, Charlie took on a new challenge, his love for running. Although not an ideal sport for a 6'5'' man, he found peace and harmony in running and loved competing against himself.

Round out the summer with one last coastal challenge.
The Second Beach Sprint Triathlon is a late-season race set entirely within some of Aquidneck Island’s most scenic and protected landscapes. Designed to be welcoming for first-time triathletes while still offering a rewarding course for experienced racers, this sprint is the perfect way to close out your summer of training.
The Course:
Swim
The race begins with an open-ocean swim off iconic Second Beach. Athletes will experience true coastal conditions in a clearly marked course with excellent sightlines and shoreline support.
Bike
The bike leg rolls through the scenic farmland of Middletown, featuring quiet roads, open views, and gentle elevation changes that reward steady effort without being overly technical.
Run
The run is the signature piece of the race, taking athletes out toward Sachuest Point and looping around the reservoir near Third Beach and Hanging Rock Road. This section winds entirely through protected nature preserve areas, offering a rare and beautiful racing environment surrounded by open land, water, and coastal views.

Each year, the Newport County YMCA hosts the annual Pie Run on Thanksgiving Day. This USATF sanctioned race, originally founded in 1985 by the Newport Running Club, collects food donations for the MLK Community Center as well as raises necessary funds for the Y's Community Support Campaign. Typically, this beloved annual event draws over 2,000 walkers and runners who gather at the Newport County YMCA parking lot. This year, the Y is again offering a LIVE/IN-PERSON or VIRTUAL option, opening the event so that ALL members of our Y community can participate in a way that works for them!
“Every year, we are so grateful to all our Pie Run participants as well as volunteers. This holiday tradition brings our community together while honoring the Y’s core values of health and wellness and social responsibility. The success of the event enables us to help those in our community with life-changing programs and Y scholarships. We are so thrilled that once again, Saccucci Honda will be our Premier Sponsor as we hit the road once more!” Mike Miller, CEO at the Newport County YMCA.
