Friendship APL is a private, independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit humane society founded in Elyria, Ohio in 1957. We own and operate the largest animal shelter in Lorain County.
We are dedicated to ensuring that no animal should suffer without the basic necessities to live a healthy life, providing the education to promote and nurture the human/animal bond and treating all those who seek our help with kindness, dignity and respect.
Friendship APL receives no government funding. We depend on the generosity and financial support of friends and neighbors, and on various fundraisers, to serve the people and animals of Lorain County.
For sponsorship information, please contact Friendship Animal Protective League [email protected].
100% of proceeds from this race go to Friendship APL's mission. Thank you for your support!
We ask that those running with dogs start towards the back and please keep your dogs on a short leash. The race route is out and back so we will need all participants to be aware of runners coming back on the other side of the trail.
*The number of "rentable" shelter dogs available will be dependent upon the dogs up for adoption at the shelter as of the day of the event, as well as the weather that day. FAPL will bring as many dogs as is possible, but please be aware that we may only be able to bring a handful, and potentially none, depending upon the aforementioned circumstances. Available dogs can be "rented" for a discretionary donation to the shelter, with a suggested donation of $15-20.

On March 15, 2010, a tragic event took the life of a great man. James A. Kerstetter was not just a son, husband, father, friend, and police officer; he was a beacon of light in our community. In July of that same year, an event was created to honor and remember Jim's legacy. Now, sixteen years later, the Kerstetter 5K has evolved into more than just a memorial; it has become a symbol of unity, remembrance, and community support, embraced by countless individuals and organizations.

When you support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County, you’re not just participating in an event – you’re joining a movement! Together, we are empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Research shows that under-resourced children and youth who have volunteer mentors and support services are far more likely to attend school regularly, thrive academically, exhibit healthy behaviors, build nurturing relationships, exude high self-esteem, and graduate from high school with a plan for the future.
Your support and the support of others help our children achieve great things! Through one-on-one mentoring relationships with caring adults, we empower children ages 6 – 19 to dream big, build resilience, and unlock their full potential. Moreover, our support services strengthen our mentoring with social and emotional learning, academic enrichment and tutoring, career and college readiness programming, summer camps, a Learning Resource Center, and family engagement activities.
