Downey, Commanding Officer of the Special Operations Command (SOC), died in the line of duty, while helping others escape from the fire and collapse scene of the twin towers at the World Trade Center on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The fire service was a major force in his life, as evidenced by his sterling career. He truly was a legend in his own time.
As a tribute to Chief Downey's legacy, his family has established the D.C. Raymond Downey Scholarship Charity Fund to keep his memory alive and to benefit the many organizations that Chief Downey cherished.

Little known facts about the trails of Forest Park:
The Wisconsinian glaciation molded this land between 20,000 and 10,000 years ago and left the Harbor Hill Moraine, a series of small hills known as “knob and kettle” terrain, including Forest Park. Which means the trails are naturally carved, not manmade like most nyc parks. Come explore and experience the beautiful 100 year old pine grove and longest continuous oak forest in Queens!
This race is dedicated to Pinky the Pacer, the lil white and brown dog with the pink nose who completed several thousand miles of trail running through the woods of Forest Park in Queens. Legends never die.

In 1993 the Nasau Police Running Club held a 5K run in memory of Nassau County Police Officer Gary R. Farley who tragically died in the line of duty. PO Farley was the first officer to lose his life
in the line of duty since the inception of the Nassau Police Running Club in 1980.
Since 1993, the Nassau County Police has tragically lost many additional members who were serving the people they were sworn to protect.
The Nassau Police Running Club has vowed to ensure that these officers lives would not be lost in vain and the club is committed to making sure all members and their families know that we will never forget the sacrifice their loved ones have endured.
The Nassau County Police Officer Memorial Run is held annually and proceeds from the Nassau Police Officer Memorial Run will be used to present scholarships in the names of our fallen officers. These scholarships will be presented to graduating high school seniors attending secondary education and who are involved in their schools running clubs.
