We decided to pull The Forge Gravel Grinder from the complexities of the Old Forge Marathon Weekend and will now offer The Forge GG as a stand alone event on Saturday August 22, 2026. Just one
course, 26.2 miles so hopefully there will be no confusion with course signage/direction. That's the plan anyway!
For 2026 the Start and Finish will be at the George T. Hiltebrandt Rec Center @ 225 North Street, Old Forge, NY 13420. There will not be a pre-race parade through Town.
Forging takes a mighty hammer and for riders who complete the 26.2 Mile event under 1 hour 42 minutes (102 minutes total)and under 1 hour 50 minutes (110 minutes) for Female riders. , you're earning the custom hammer! You smashed it and this hammer will be one of your most unique pieces among other trophies and medals! Hop up on your gravel, cx, 29er hardtail, full squisher or fatbike. Keep your eyes up, get that tire pressure not too soft-not too hard.
Important: The surface of the course has a lot of loose rock around the size of a cue ball to baseball size. On your cx/gravel bike, go with robust casing and wider the better. It's all good if you show up with 35mm, but please be super careful at speed while descending to avoid punctures. Front suspension crowd won't have this concern but gravel bikes, please bring tube(or 2) and co2's to address punctures. Support is in the form of water and a sag. No mechanical support on course.
The surface and elevation gain will be in the spirit of true Gravel Grit and you're invited to ride as competitively or as comfortably as you like. There are several short watts buster inclines which present the challenge of a clean line rather than burning a match. Recommended low gearing minimum 34/30(1 to 1 for a very short period isn't a bad idea) for a lightly supported grinder from Thendara to nearing Big Moose and back.
The Gravel Grinder will be a timed event with overall winners (Male/Female/Masters Male/Female) 1st-3rd. If we end up with 10 or more Fat Bikes we will also award this Division. The 26.2M race start and finish at the George T. Hiltebrandt Rec Center @ 201 North St., Old Forge, NY. We will not parade through Town as we have done years past when the event was held in early September.

The New England Green River Marathon is one of the most beautiful races in New England. Starting in Marlboro, Vermont and
following the course of the Green River through an 1870’s covered bridge, and ending with a finish-line celebration in the shade of maple trees at Greenfield Community College in Massachusetts. This USATF-certified (Certification MA18003JK) course has a net 1,400 foot drop over a rolling, downhill course that has seen many personal best and Boston qualifying times for well-trained runners. Choose below from either the regular entry, OR if you want to support the Connecticut River Conservancy by raising an additional $250, join the Stream Team! This funding will go directly to the CRC for their efforts to restore and advocate for clean water, healthy habitats, and resilient communities to support a diverse and thriving watershed.

Note for 5k Course: Known among DCA athletes as “the loop,” the scenic, single-lap 5K course begins at the playground on the school’s main campus on Page
Road. The course begins mostly flat and runs south down Page Road, turns east (left) on Craig Road, north (left) on Route 137, west
(left) on Windmill Hill Road where the elevation gradually rises, and finally, south (left) on Page Road up Alsi’s Hill, west (right) on
the dirt loop beyond the playground, north (left) back on to Page Road, and ends back at DCA’s playground. This gently rolling, open-road course has a mix of paved road and gravel.
Note for our Fun Run: We have a beautiful quarter-mile fun run begins at the DCA playground and follows the dirt drive past the shop, then turns south (right) onto
the dirt drive that leads to the field cottage with a view of Mount Monadnock on the right. The course continues east (left) up Carriage
Path (grass path between the stone walls) and then turns north (left) at the gate onto Page Road, ending back at the playground

New to bike racing?: Hydra Cross is a great event to try out bike racing or cyclocross for the first time. There is a free intro to cyclocross racing clinic at 8:00 am on race day that is taught by local, friendly bike racers. Learn the basics to help you enjoy your race. Beginner races following shortly after -- novice men should sign up for the 9:00 am category 4 and beginner race and novice women should sign up for the 11:00 am women's category 4 and 5 race. Just a note on lingo, brand-new racers and novices start as 'category 5' racers. Since we are a USA Cycling sanctioned race, you will need a license but can purchase one when you register at http://bikereg.com/hydracross for $15. If you have any questions about the clinic or racing, please just shoot us an email at [email protected] and we'll respond with what you need.
Course Description: A fun, fast, twisty course that is primarily flat but has some surprising uphill kickers. After a slightly uphill, wide start from the "Legion Shelf," the course heads towards Holyoke's "Muscle Beach" and the hilly southern end of the park. The course design takes full advantage of the elevation to make riders work–but then also brings rewards with a swooping downhill that cuts back and forth across the hill. We have some stinging off-camber sections that will require your skills, with the most challenging and decisive sector coming at the end of the course (see Youtube videos below for a preview). The course runs the full length of the long, linear park with ample opportunities for spectating, with continuous announcing throughout the race by the voice of NCC Hydra Cross 2025, Jake Kravitz. Mountain and river views abound.
Equipment Recommendation: File treads (if dry) and all-around tires will work well for most riders. The course is a mix of grass, dirt, and some pavement. New to cyclocross? Mountain bikes, in any shape, work fine for getting started racing. Road or touring bikes that allow for 32mm tires also work fine.
Race Atmosphere: Come for the race, stay for the atmosphere. Our beer garden and picnic area are family-friendly. There is a playground, splash pad, and popular skate park as well. Our race is known for its good vibes and community-driven feel.
The excellent Thai Chili Street Food Hub will be serving food in the American Legion Parking lot at lunch time. As usual, expect the American Legion to be serving up coffee, breakfast items, beer and alcohol throughout the day, in addition to lunch and snack items.
Thai Chili Food Truck, 100 State St Stockhouse 122, Ludlow, MA, United States, Massachusetts 01056, 24 April
Want to do a second race? Great, the second race is just $15, just register for two races at the same time when you sign up.

In order to bring this race to you again this year, we can't do it without volunteers. Seriously, we can't do it without you, and we appreciate you believing in the value, community, and camaraderie that this grassroots race brings to Holyoke and NECX.
Please sign up to volunteer where you can. Volunteers will receive special “staff only” swag this year!
We pride ourselves on taking great care of our volunteers. Friday course setup volunteers will be provided with lunch. All setup, reg, and course maintenance volunteers will receive a free (refunded) race entry AND invite to the volunteers-only after-party (including a free beer ticket) hosted right on-site at our incredible hosts, the American Legion, at 4:30pm or as soon as the course tear-down is complete.
We need folks to stick around and help us tear down the course immediately after the last race--if you stay to tear down the course, dinner from Pizza d'Action (Holyoke's best, with ample vegan and vegetarian pizzas) will be provided for you on-site while the last race is in progress so that you can stay and help with a full stomach. Volunteers who work registration or course repair jobs during race day will also be provided with lunch.

FAQ
I'm not sure what my FTP is or which wave to register for? Don't stress it! The waves are just to get groups of riders with similar ability the chance to challenge themselves against each other. Just pick one you think is about right. You can always go in and edit your wave later in Bikereg if you change your mind.
I'm not super interested in head to head, I just want to race against the clock? No problem! We will still have official timing so you can see your official time and how to you stack up against your age group and/or your previous best.
I'm only a Cat 4 but I smash up hills and want to race in Wave A against the heavy hitters? Go for it! The USAC categories are listed as a guide just to help you find the right level of competition, there are no official Cat restrictions.
What happens if I decide to change my Wave? You can change your category after registering in Bikereg up until registration closes.

Number pick-up open from 8:45 AM until 10 AM.
Course is open to riders from 8:45 - 10:15 AM on race day.

The course will close to all traffic promptly at 10:15am
No riders or vehicles will be allowed back down the course until the last rider has finished.
First wave starts at 10:30 AM.
Awards ceremony will take place at the summit after last racer finishes and results are tallied
Going back down:
Racers need to arrange their own car rides down from the top of the mountain or ride down.
Limited parking at the finish line (top of the mountain). Carpooling is strongly encouraged for those who want to drive down.
You may bicycle down after the race. Use caution when descending, there are some frost heaves.
Stop frequently to let your brakes and rims cool! Be especially careful if you have carbon rims. Letting a little air out if your tires before starting the ride down the mountain is recommended.
WEATHER
If it does happen to rain the race will go on, an extra challenge!
If conditions are severe (driving rain, high winds, lightning) we will postpone the start for as long as our vendors can accommodate. We will only cancel the race if the conditions refuse to improve and make the course unsafe to ride.
In a worst case scenario where we have to cancel we can all head over to Harpoon brewery and commiserate. We have created a virtual route that mimics the course and will schedule a date for a virtual race if needed!
All proceeds are going to the Ascutney Trails Association non-profit, so in the end its all for a great cause.
