The annual Lobo Cancer Challenge community fundraiser helps the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center to deliver the best cancer care in the world right here in New Mexico. Our generous Event Sponsors make it possible for 100% of every single fundraising dollar raised by our Challengers to go directly to their choice of program in cancer patient treatment and support, advanced cancer research, community outreach, or education and training — because no one should have to face cancer alone.
The Lobo Cancer Challenge event day, held at the UNM Lobo Football Stadium in September, features a 25 Mile Bike Ride, a 50 Mile Bike Ride, a 5K Run / Walk, a Stadium Stair Challenge, and a Cub Pack Fun Run for children ages 1-10, as well as a Virtual Challenger option. Sponsor booths populate a Participant Village, and games and activities are offered on the festive field in a celebration of community support.
Your Fundraising Supports:
The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only one in the New Mexico region designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center — in the top 3% of the nation’s elite cancer centers! This fundraising event helps us to deliver the best cancer care in the world. We are deeply grateful to our community for their tremendous support in helping all New Mexicans facing cancer.

A One-of-a-Kind Event
“I hope that people, when they come to the Lobo Cancer Challenge, feel that they are part of our family. They are part of our team. That the discoveries we make at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the people that we help, the lives that we save are all because of them.” — Yolanda Sanchez, PhD, CEO

The Tour of the Rio Grande Bicycle Century will not be an organized mass event in 2026.
For locals who are familiar with the South Valley area near the start / finish, there's been a lot of road work and construction. We have been talking with Bernalillo County and NMDOT for the past couple months in regards to the ride / permitting. They say with what is planned for Rio Bravo Blvd and its intersection with 2nd street, they cannot guarantee they will approve our permitting. They described how the state of the construction will make the road unsafe for cyclists. It is with this information I have chosen to make the event virtual.
A virtual event is one that doesn't have a particular ride date, start time or support outside of ridewithgps directions fournd on our website www.torgbc.com. This is being done so that the event holds its 4th / last Sunday of September spot on public calendars. It also gives fans of the ride the option to use the ridewithgps to find a place to park away from the construction, and attempt a part or all of the ride. There are a number of local businesses on the way that have food and beverage and they would love your support.
We did think about moving the start / finish to make the ride happen and we came to the conclusion to not change the ride in fear of ruining the experience.
Registration for the virtual tour is $5 or $20. Both options have fees and tax. The $20 dollar option will include a shirt and stickers for the virtual tour 2026 and local sponsor perks with shipping included. These will start being shipped in June and sent as they are ordered with an estimated two week turnaround time.
Online registration is open until 11:59pm MST Sunday September 27th.
