Why the SISU Backyard Ultra?
The SISU Backyard Ultra at Lake Rebecca brings together running, grit, community, and a true Finnish touch — complete with a sauna and swim option after your run.Inspired by the Finnish word sisu — meaning determination, toughness, resilience, and the willingness to keep going when things get hard — this race is built to challenge runners of all experience levels. The format is simple, but the challenge is not: runners complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour. Finish the loop with time to spare, and you can rest, refuel, change gear, hit the sauna, take a swim, or get ready for the next start. When the next hour begins, everyone still in the race starts again. If you do not finish the loop within the hour, or you are unable to start the next loop on time, your race is over. Everyone else keeps going. That is the beauty of the backyard ultra: there is no set finish line. Your goal might be one loop, a half marathon, a marathon, 50K, 50 miles, 100 miles, or simply one more loop than you thought you could do. At SISU, every runner gets to define their own version of success. Our loop at Lake Rebecca will include a mix of gravel, asphalt, and trail, giving runners a scenic and varied course throughout the day and night.Whether you are attempting your first backyard ultra, chasing a new distance, or just coming to experience something different, SISU is designed to be hard, welcoming, memorable, and fun.Come run one loop. Come chase your first ultra. Come see how far you can go.Bring your crew, bring your friends, bring your stubbornness. This is SISU.

THE THUMBS UP MOVEMENT
Thumbs Up was founded in 2014 by several community members in honor of two great men, Bob Schmit and Chuck Dahlheimer, who, like many others, took their lives after living in silence from a mental illness. Thumbs Up is all about EMBRACING those struggling and breaking the stigma around mental health, connecting, supporting, and encouraging one another to talk about their feelings and challenges and to "KEEP MOVING FORWARD."
We are dedicated to educating and teaching about mental illness, the warning signs of suicide, what you can do to help others who struggle, and community awareness initiatives.
So, let's UNITE to help others to KEEP MOVING FORWARD.
MISSION STATEMENT
Bringing awareness to mental health and providing support and resources to all.
#KEEPMOVINGFORWARD
How far will you go
Get ready to test your endurance at the Icebox event, a timed challenge that allows you to accumulate as many miles as possible on a beautiful single-track course (5ish miles per loop) before time runs out. Choose between a 4-hour or 8-hour challenge and start anytime between 6:00 am and 8:00 am. In the race's final hour, you can tackle a 1-mile loop (1.05, actually) to push yourself even further. This event is an excellent opportunity to test stamina and explore the park's beautiful trails. Whether you're a seasoned runner or new to the sport, we hope you'll join us for the Icebox challenge.
Race Day Schedule
Registration opens: 5:30 amStarting time range: 6:00 am - 8:00 amBecause of the single-track course, we have opted for a time range start over a group start. This start allows runners to find their own pace instead of being stuck behind or ahead of another runner.
Location
800 Whitetail Blvd., River Falls, WI 54022The Icebox course is just across the border from the Twin Cities east down highway 94.
Start
Before you begin, you will record your start time on the large display board next to your name with a provided marker. As you return from your loop, you are responsible for tracking it on the display boards. When you finish, be it on your own or when your 480/240 minutes are complete, you will record your finish time on the display board.
1 Mile loop
We are bringing back the 1-mile loop (1.05, actually). Only when you have an hour remaining on your time can you start the 1-mile loop.
