Description
For over five decades, the Volksläufe has brought together runners from all walks of life, making it far more than a race; it’s a cherished community tradition. The Volksläufe, meaning “The People’s Race” in German, embraces the spirit of family, friendship, and fitness, inviting participants to a fun and meaningful celebration.
In 2026, we celebrate something even bigger.
As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, this year’s Volksläufe carries an extra layer of pride and purpose. Hosted by the Frankenmuth Jaycees, this Fourth of July tradition will honor 250 years of American spirit with every mile, every cheer, and every finish-line moment, all while continuing our mission to support charitable causes close to our community’s heart.
Our 51st Annual race will feature the traditional 5K, 10K, and Half-Marathon, guiding runners through Frankenmuth’s picturesque Bavarian streets, scenic countryside, and along the peaceful Cass River. And for our youngest runners and those new to racing, we proudly offer the 2K Fun Run, a shorter route filled with the same high spirits and patriotic energy as the longer distances.
Whether you’re chasing a personal best, running in red, white, and blue with friends, or starting a new family tradition, the Volksläufe has something for everyone.

Live entertainment
Food vendors
A bustling community marketplace
Family-friendly activities and music
And of course, the spectacular Frankenmuth fireworks display will light up the night sky as we kick off Independence Day weekend.
There is no better way to begin America’s 250th birthday celebration than surrounded by community, music, and the unmistakable tradition of a Fourth of July in Frankenmuth.
As always, the Frankenmuth Jaycees’ mission goes far beyond the race. Every dollar raised helps fund the July 3rd fireworks display and supports charitable initiatives throughout the year. When you run Volksläufe, you are investing directly back into the community.
After crossing the finish line on July 4th, stick around for post-race festivities filled with food, music, and celebration.
The Volksläufe is about people: racers, families, friends, sponsors, and our incredible volunteers. Together, we will make this 51st edition, and America’s 250th birthday, unforgettable.
Thank you for supporting this tradition and helping us continue to make a meaningful difference in our community.

Add an all-American angle to your outing by opting for one of our 3 special holiday divisions:
☆It's Back for 2026☆
Rucking Division: Rucking is simply walking or hiking while carrying a weighted rucksack or backpack. It is a staple of military training, as soldiers must be able to carry weapons, food and other supplies for long distances. Embrace an even HEAVIER challenge when you sign up for the Ruck Division.
The Flag Carrying Division: Participants in this patriotic category will run or walk their 5K proudly bearing a mounted 3 x 5 American flag from start to finish.
Hot Dog Eating Division: It’s simply not the Fourth of July without hot dogs, and those who choose this challenge — up to 20 competitors — will try to chow down on four dogs in 76 seconds, then get their 5K underway. Consider it our version of the world-famous Nathan’s Hot-Dog Eating Contest, which is held annually in New York City every Independence Day.
Don't have the time for 5K? Try our timed 1-Mile Fun Run! A fun, friendly course awaits runners and walkers of all ages who want to show their Firecracker fervor but with a little less mileage. Whether you choose to make it competitive or relaxed, enjoy this frolic through downtown on the 4th of July!
Our littlest firecrackers are invited to make a bang all their own in our Kids’ 200-Meter Dash. Open to competitors ages 8 and under, our Kids’ Dash offers children the opportunity soar like eagles down Liberty Street, completing their race at the same finish line as Mom or Dad!
Kids can continue celebrating Independence Day at the corner of State and William, where they can take part in the Epic Races float in the Ann Arbor Jaycees' 4th of July parade (accompanied by a parent or guardian)!
The Firecracker 5K is walker friendly!
Sunglasses and medals for all participants in all divisions!

Event Details
When: Saturday, July 11th
Time: Race starts at 9:00 AM
Where: Dequindre Cut Freight Yard, Detroit
Stay for the Fun
The finish line is just the beginning! After the race, stick around to enjoy the best of Detroit’s riverfront district:
Relax at the Freight Yard beer & wine garden: We’re requesting an early opening of the beer and wine garden for our participants and guests.
Explore Eastern Market: Take a post-race stroll through the historic market.
Hit the Riverfront: Enjoy a scenic walk along one of the city's most beautiful landmarks.
Dine Local: Refuel at one of the many excellent restaurants just steps away from the course.
Your Impact: Turning Miles into Milestones
When you participate, you aren’t just finishing a race—you’re helping neighbors in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park cross the finish line into stable housing.
Housing is the first step, but stability is the journey: Your contribution ensures no one has to walk that path alone. Funds raised provide more than just a roof; they provide the foundation for a fresh start. Your support directly funds:
Essential Documentation: Obtaining IDs, Social Security cards, and birth certificates.
Move-in Costs: Covering fees and deposits that often stand in the way of a new home.
Home & Life Essentials
Household Necessities: Providing items to turn a house into a home.
Daily Support: Funding transportation passes and school supplies.
Long-Term Stability: Wraparound Services: We provide counseling and support services to ensure lasting independence.
