2026 - 13th Annual Race
This race is in memory of Matthew Rairdon, whose life was tragically taken in November 2013. When preparing to go to college, Matt was extremely appreciative to receive a scholarship to attend St. Joseph's College. The intent of this scholarship fund is to help other people who want to pursue a nursing education at St. Joseph's. The first scholarship was awarded in the fall of 2014, and now we award 2 scholarships annually.
Here are the details for this year's race:
Packet Pickup will be done over 2 evenings, from 4-6 pm on Thursday, July 16th and Friday, July 17th at BreaLu, 511 Main Street in Westbrook.
We have a water station on the course route.
We will have an awards ceremony in the park after the race.
"Matt's Mile" is a short fun run for children, located in the park. The race is for children age 10 and under and will be split into 2 heats: first 1-5 year olds, and then 6-10 year olds. If you want a t-shirt that is smaller than a Youth Small, please email us at [email protected] with your request. Make sure to write Matt's Mile T-Shirt Request in the Re: line.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the course every year. We will have Westbrook Strong Dog Bandanas available for sale at packet pick up and in the park during race day. They are $5 each. You can pay with Venmo or cash.
This year's charitable gift recipient will be Safe Voices. Safe Voices currently operates the only shelter and support services for victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking and exploitation in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties. If you want more information on them, please go to their website: www.safevoices.org
Thank you for 13 years of support - the Rairdon Family very much appreciates it. Westbrook Strong!
The Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids is one of the oldest open water swims in the world; since before World War II thousands have braved Maine’s waters to swim the 2.4 miles from Peaks Island to Portland’s East End Beach.
The annual Drakes Island Road Race is back again this year! In addition to the 5K, we will have the 4th annual Kids Fun Run, which will be an untimed event from the Jetty to the Community House (approx 1/3 mile). All runners and their supporters are invited to post-race refreshments at the Community House.
Pre-race bib number and shirt pick up will be held at the Community House (8 Maple St) on Friday, July 17th, from 5-6 pm.
About the Race
Portland’s first multisport race for children, The Portland Kids Duathlon, is presented by Benchmark Real Estate. The race gives young people ages 3-12 an opportunity to participate in the fast-growing world of multi-sport racing. The run, bike, run format of a duathlon is fun and approachable, a great race for non-swimmers and triathletes alike. A bike only event for our youngest athletes as well as those with special needs makes the event even more accessible. All young athletes will finish the race with a smile on their face, a medal around their neck, and a boost of self-confidence and pride. All profits from this race will be donated to the Foundation for Portland Public Schools. Both in-person and virtual race options available.
Course
Transition will be at the triangle in front of Payson Park with separate transition areas for each race. We are on Baxter Boulevard with out-and-back bike courses on the road and out-and-back runs on the trail. Courses will parallel each other to make for easy viewing for spectators. All roads will be traffic free.
NOTE: All participants will need to purchase an annual membership with the USA Triathlon (USAT) for an additional $10. This is because our race is sanctioned and supported by USAT. See details below. USAT has now made this a one time fee.
About USAT
The Portland Kids Duathlon is USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event. This means that not only do you have the confidence to know that the race will be safe, sanctioned, and insured but also that we follow a uniform set of rules with other USAT events. The term “sanction” refers to the compliance of a multisport event to USA Triathlon’s safety requirements. Safety plans, course maps, and event details must be submitted for review by USA Triathlon staff. It further requires our race director undergo an annual background check and maintain a certification from the U.S. Center for SafeSport. As a member, you also have access to discounts from many of USAT's partners including sports related products and travel companies. Those are found once you've created an account and then added and logged in to your child's account at https://member.usatriathlon.org/.
The 47th annual Sebago Days celebration will again include a road race open to both runners and walkers. It'll be a 5-kilometer out-and-back course on Route 11, starting near the intersection of Route 114, and the course will be closed to traffic.

Long Course - https://strava.app.link/w5sfXrf4LLb
Event Website: www.mainelygravel.com
The Mainely Gravel ride is an event for all riders and is designed to challenge everybody on a mixed surface route over rolling hills. The gravel sections are everyday roads and can be ridden with either a road bike (30+mm tires ,recommended) or a gravel bike. PEDAL ASSIST BIKES are allowed but riders using such are not eligible for prizes. The dirt road surfaces can vary day to day depending on weather conditions and pot hole development. Please know that the last 5 kilometers of the route are on Pineland Farms xc ski trails that are well maintained and mown but could prove tricky on a road bike.
This year there are two course length options. The Long Course is 58 miles, and the short course (35 miles) is per the Long Course until mile 25 when the Short Course riders head for home while the Long Course riders do a 20-mile loop and then come back to hit the final 7 miles per the short course.
Registration check-in opens the day of the race at 8:30 with the mass start at 10:00. Riders will start en masse on Pineland Farms’ Oak Hill field adjacent to the parking lot. Please line up per your attitude toward the ride (Race? Ride? Adventure?). There is a lead car neutral start as the ride exits the 300 yards of the starting Oak Hill field and heads down Route 231 until the right hand turn onto Doughty Road.
Post race we are organize a gathering complete with food, drink and music. Food is provided by the Pineland Farms Deli and can be ordered on this registration page. Music is performed by local bands and we love giving them exposure. During the gathering we will have the awards presentation for Mainely Gravel short and long courses for all divisions. Our timing and results are handled by Eleven 11 Timing (www.eleven11timing.com) who do an absolutely wonderful job.
USA Cycling membership is not required for this ride.
Safety is paramount so follow the rules of the road. There will be road crossings. Stop! Check for traffic. The roads are open so stay right especially on blind sections such as corners and rolling hills.
Plenty to do at Pineland Farms. Bring the family who can enjoy a hike or run on the trails while registrants are out riding. Guests can buy lunch at the Pineland Farms market.
Port-a-johns are adjacent to the Oak Hill field parking lot.
Finally, Downeast Racing donates $5 of every registration to Independence Association (IA) which, for the last 60 years, has been dedicated to assisting adults and children with disabilities in obtaining full and inclusive lives in their chosen communities. As you will notice, we have included a donation option on the registration page. All donations (none too small!!) are used to enhance the programs for the Independence Association clients. Independence Association (IA) does fabulous work assisting those with disabilities lead full lives in the communities of the Maine Midcoast Region. Supervised independent living homes and apartments, outreach programs, work training, multiple physical fitness activities, friendship and caring. Mainely Gravel, through the generosity of its participants, has raised over $11,000 for Independence Association. We and the gang at IA thank you!!
In 2026, the Ruck for the Fallen will unite members of our community to honor our fallen Service Members in a 10k obstacle course race hosted at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, ME. We do this in tribute of those men and women from our local community whose lives were lost while serving in our nation's Armed Forces and who fought to defend the freedoms of America that we enjoy each and every day.
During this race, participants will strap packs to their backs and ruck through the beautiful (yet challenging) trails of Pineland Farms before undertaking "The Crucible," a series of 20+ obstacles that will test your strength, will, and endurance before crossing the finish line and earning your place amongst the elite.
Challenge. Serve. Inspire. These are the three pillars of R4TF that we encourage each member of our community to emulate. Together, we will carry forth the selfless service and extraordinary character that was exemplified by each of our fallen heroes. By doing so, we will remember them and continue to live a life worthy of their sacrifice.
