With its first burial in 1807, Historic Congressional Cemetery is among the oldest institutions in Washington, DC, and is the final resting place of over 70,000 individuals.
Their stories are American history in microcosm, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Still an active burial ground, it is the only place in Washington where individuals can be buried at a site directly on Pierre L’Enfant’s 18th century city plan.
Historic Congressional Cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011 and continues to build upon the legacy of over 200 years of American history. The cemetery is administered by the nonprofit Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery and owned by Christ Church + Washington Parish. The association is constantly striving to maintain the historic, cultural, and aesthetic qualities of this natural landscape along the Anacostia River. Hundreds of volunteers each year help preserve the cemetery and further its nonprofit mission

About Kenzie
When Mackenzie Rose Beach was born on July 10, 2015, no one knew that this tiny baby possessed the spirit of a warrior. She was a happy little girl, and brought joy to everyone around her, especially her parents, Kate and Andrew, and her big sister, Maddie. However, life as a typical baby came to a screeching halt when, on March 22, 2016, Mackenzie began vomiting and was taken to the Emergency Room, where a scan showed a buildup of fluid as a result of a mass at the base of her brain. Mackenzie underwent surgery to insert a drain for the excess fluid and remove a portion of the tumor for biopsy. The pathology results returned as a malignant cancer, known as Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT). This is an extremely rare, aggressive cancer seen in only 3 children out of 1,000,000. Mackenzie endured many brain surgeries and flourished under a protocol by St. Jude, administered at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, involving an experimental drug and chemotherapy. In July
2016, a scan showed the result everyone was praying for – no evidence of disease! As Mackenzie and her family prepared for the next step in the treatment process – traveling to Boston in October 2016 for 6 weeks of radiation – an MRI confirmed the worst possible news. Despite being cancer-free just four months prior, the tumor had returned and spread to other areas in her tiny body. Mackenzie fought with all she had, but she passed away in the arms of her sister, and surrounded by her mother and father, on December 18, 2016.
Kenzie Rose, as she was affectionately known, showed us all what is important in life – family, spending time together, enjoying our blessings, and not taking a single moment for granted. We all hope to make her proud by continuing to live as she would want us to live. To honor her memory, we are organizing this triathlon to raise awareness for childhood cancer and as a fundraiser to support The Mackenzie Rose Foundation. The Foundation was incorporated at the beginning of the year to provide essential items to families experiencing unexpected admissions to the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s National Medical Center. With your generosity, we will be able to fill and deliver care packages containing everyday essentials directly to the hospital. These “Kenzie Kits” will allow parents to spend more time with their sick child instead of worrying about picking up a toothbrush, notebook, or snack - all things that are often forgotten with an unexpected hospital admission. All proceeds
from this event will fund the Foundation to help provide comfort and support to other families dealing with this devastating disease.

With August temperatures and humidity soaring, we are offering a great way to get a 5K run in! This indoor 5K takes place entirely inside the mall!
Perfectly timed with both Maryland tax-free week and back-to-school shopping, not only can you hit the halls of Arundel Mills, you can stop in for great specials at all of their retailer before or after your run!
Last race we had great specials from Hey Dude, Under Armour, Nike, Lindt Chocolate, Auntie Anne's, Medieval Times, Nandos, Merritt Athletics, and more! Stay tuned to hear who will be participating this summer.
Choose between completing multiple loops for the full 5K or opting for our family‑friendly fun run or walk, featuring a shorter distance perfect for kids and new runners. This race takes place before the mall opens! It won't be a great course for setting a personal best, but we can promise it will be a fun and unique one!
All finishers will receive a medal.
This race is hard capped. If you can still sign up, there is space! Once we hit our cap, we will have to welcome you next year! Strollers are only allowed during the Fun Run/Walk
Sunday Morning Check-In Time:
Elite Runners: 8:00 AM
5K: 8:40 AM
Fun Run/Walk: 9:45 AM
Post-Race Activities!
After you cross the finish line, stick around for post‑race activities, including fitness demos, recovery stretches, training tips, and workout ideas for all ages.
Packet Pick-Up
Bib, swag, and shirts will be handed out before the race! If you have not received it, please arrive by 7:30 AM for Elite Runners, 8:00 AM for the 5K, and 9:15 for the Fun Run/Walk.
Reminder- this is a cupless race! Waters will not be handed out. We have dozens of water fountains on site and want to ensure the floors stay as dry as possible. Please bring a container with a lid for your water.
Swag and Giveaways
All participants receive both a finisher's medal and a shirt! Check in for the swag bag our retailers and partners provide, including giveaways, raffles, promos, and discounts at Arundel Mills stores! Shirts are not guaranteed for runners who sign up after 8/1.
Hydration Station
In order to keep the floors as dry as possible, there will only be a water station at the start/finish line that racers will pass as they go around the mall. While water/drinks are allowed on the course, there will be no water cups while on the course except for water at the food court. The mall has several restrooms available throughout the course that have water fountains. Running with a cup without a lid is not permitted, but running with water or other fluids is permitted as long as it closes (water bottle, camelbak, sports bottle, etc.)
What to Bring
Your own water, bags, and gear are fine to bring! We will have waves starting/finishing in the food court that will provide plenty of tables and chairs to store your items. We cannot allow pets, selfie sticks, glass, or weapons. Note that neither Arundel Mills nor Peake Events is responsible for lost belongings.
Parking and Entrance Recommendation
The closest parking would be the Maryland Live Casino parking garage (free), and use the Food Court Entrance. Nando Peri Peri is located next to that Food Court entrance for reference.
Distance Disclaimer
Please note: Course distance and start times may adjust slightly based on registration numbers and logistics. Waved starts will help ensure plenty of space for running through the mall corridors. The 5k course will be four laps around the mall and is ~1/10th of a kilometer longer than an exact 5K.
Strollers and Children Note
The 5K race will have runners completing four laps around the mall, making for tight spots, especially in two sections that require a small ramp to go up/down. Runners can also opt to run up and down the three stairs as they see fit. Strollers will only be allowed during the Fun Run/walk and must start at the back. Any child participating in the 5K should be able to maintain a jogging pace and stick to the right-hand side of the course. We love kids, but know they like to take off and run around without always looking around their surroundings. Please ensure your child is both old enough for the 5K and can follow proper race etiquette. We invite everyone to join the Fun Run/Walk!
