Welcome to the Battle of the Run Clubs Team XC Challenge
And by run clubs, we mean Run Clubs, but we also mean run...."clubs".
You can sign up with a group of friends, with family members, and even as an individual. You do not need a complete team to enter; if for some reason your friends don't quite get organized and your team ends up a little short, we'll combine mixed teams to make sure everyone has a chance at a final score. Individuals can enter as "Free Agents," and will be combined into these mixed teams or possibly a team of their own. It's a great way to meet local runners and make new friends.
. If you are entering as an individual, please enter "Free Agent" Team.
So how will the scoring work?
There will be 4 races:
1 mile "Steeplechase" @ 8am - obstacles comprised of small horse jumps (2'-2'6"), ditches, potentially through water and banks
10 Mile @ 8:30am
10k @ 9:00am
5k @ 9:30am
If you register for the 10 mile/10k or 5k and would like to add the 1-mile obstacle course, we’d love to have you give it a try! Simply email [email protected] to request a promo code that will allow you to add the obstacle course to your registration for FREE.
Each runner may choose the distance that suits them best. Each race will be scored equally, as follows:
1st place - 1 point
2nd place - 2 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 4 points
And so on....
Team scores will consist of the top 4 best placings, with the goal of earning the LOWEST overall team score. Additional runners on a team will not add to the score, but can contribute by bumping runners from other teams down in the rankings.
All teams may be of the same gender and run the same race, or any combination of distances/genders that you choose and there is no limit to the number of racers from a single club. The more the merrier.
Deadline for any requests to change or merge teams is 12pm on Friday, January 22.
There is a tiny bit of strategy involved, as a "perfect" team score of 4 (4 wins) does actually require multiple distances and genders.
After the race, stick around for amazing food provided by Stable View's famous Graze and Gaze, relax, play lawn games, and mingle as you wait for your team to finish. Showers are available on site and adult beverages will be available at cost in the Tavern.
Race Schedule:
7 am check in/packet pickup begins
8am 1 mile Obstacle Race starts
8:30 10 mile Race starts
9:00 10k Race starts
9:30 5k Race starts
Awards to follow
Winning team's name will be engraved on a perpetual trophy to be displayed at Stable View and individual trophies will be awarded to winners.
For those wishing to wake up near the Start Line or to linger longer after the race, Stable View offers contemporary lodging - perfect for easing those post-race muscles - or RV Hook Ups. Participants can enjoy the peaceful country setting, but also not be too far away from dining, sightseeing and shopping in historic downtown Aiken. Further details, pictures and booking for accommodations is on Airbnb or via email [email protected] to reserve directly with Stable View. All RV reservations must reserve directly via Stable View.
Event will proceed rain or shine.
T-shirts and exact sizes are not guaranteed after 1/15/2027
🦬 Be the Buffalo 🦬
Do you know why we call this the “Be the Buffalo” Race and why we are so passionate about continuing it each year?
Dianne Sullivan Wells (FiA name: Digits) was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and a well-known runner in Lexington that started the run group Running Wild that still meets to this day. Digits was tragically taken from us during one of our early morning runs in December 2018. That week the local FiA & F3 groups converged and held a prayer circle, and a friend read a story about buffalo. You see, when a storm arises buffalo gather together & face the storm head on, and because of this they get through the storm quicker compared to other animals. For us “Being the Buffalo” is herding together & facing storms together. All storms are different, and it doesn’t mean the journey is easy. It doesn’t mean the journey doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t mean the pain will end quicker. But it means that together with your people & your community, you will get through it by praying for each other, lifting each other up, helping each other. Facing it together.
A year and a half later we lost another beloved runner unexpectedly during a battle with breast cancer. Edith Edy Pearson (FiA name: Needle) was also a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, fierce runner, and our biggest cheerleader.
The Be the Buffalo 5K Memorial Run for Digits and Needle was started in honor of Digits & Needle. A way to remember them for their impact on us and to our community, for their love of running, and for their legacy to live on.
Each year a portion of the proceeds of the Be the Buffalo Race is donated to a charity close to the heart of the families of Digits & Needle. For the 2026 race, we have decided to continue to support our local community. The same community that showed up for us, that carried us through the storm.
So, if you’re a runner, sign-up to join us on Feb 7th. If you don’t run, sign up to walk with us. Or if you’re unable to do either one, you can donate to support, because one thing I know for sure is this community shows up. We face the storm together.
We are currently looking for sponsors. Please reach out if you are interested. The deadline for sponsorship is January 7th, 2026.
This race will make donations annually to the charity of choice decided by families of Digits (Dianne Wells) and Needle (Edy Pearson). The proceeds for the 2026 race will go to the family of Kathy Young. She was a secretary at Rocky Creek Elementary School, whose life was taken too soon earlier this year.
