3 running events in Taupō, Waikato

It's time to set aside Sunday, 1st March 2026 for Taupo’s annual Wairakei Estate Ironkidz event.

The fun triathlon for 7 to 16 year olds is run on the Taupo lakefront (near the Mere Road intersection) part of the same course the Ironman New Zealand competitor’s use.

Wairakei Estate Ironkidz offers a triathlon over varying distances to suit different age groups.

The emphasis is on participating and having fun, although there is a timed elite section for 10 to 16 year olds. Children can enter as individuals or in a team for the non Elite events.

There is also a fun Splash and Dash event for 5 to 7 year olds, consisting of a splash in Lake Taupo and a short dash along the lakefront .

Safety is a key consideration, with volunteers and safety kayakers on hand for the swim section. Taupo’s Lake Terrace is closed for the duration of the event so that children can compete the bike leg without traffic.

There is a huge range of spot prizes up for grabs and each child who completes Wairakei Estate Ironkidz comes away with a fantastic experience.
