Indoor bathrooms will be available in the City Center Common Space at 89 Main Street, adjacent to Onion River Outdoors.

Please allow EXTRA time to find on-street parking. Due to race insurance requirements and the use of downtown streets, headphones and strollers are not allowed. The races start and finish on Langdon Street. The street will be blocked off to traffic during the race.

The out-and-back course crosses in front of the Vermont State House and proceeds to the Montpelier Bike Path. The course includes a short loop through the Montpelier High School grounds. The 5k Power Walkers turn around at the 1.55-mile mark on the course. The 10k runners proceed to the turnaround off Junction Road. The relatively flat and fast 10k course is roughly half paved and half dirt road.

If you are 50 years of age or older, and your running pace is slower than 15 minutes per mile, please consider entering the 5k Power Walk vs the 10k run. Thank you!

The Capital City Stampede is the New England 65+ Runners Club's Vermont State Banner Race. Runners and power walkers, ages 64 and up are invited to a post-race lunch (pizza is free, drinks are on your own) at Positive Pie, 22 State Street in Montpelier. The gathering is hosted by Vermont NE-65+ Runners Club State Directors Darrel Lasell, Fab Pattison, and Elizabeth McCarthy.

    10k Race Awards Ceremony:

Immediately following the race on Langdon Street. Enjoy camaraderie with fellow runners and complimentary refreshments!

The Capital City Stampede 10k is the seventh event in the 2026 CVR/ORO Race Series and the third event in the GMAA Team Racing Performance Series. Race co-directors are Heather Tomlins, George Moltz, and Jim Flint

10k race prizes: (must be present to collect an award)

Onion River Outdoors gift certificates go to the first female, male, and non-binary finishers in each five-year age group! Gift certificates can be redeemed after the race at the Onion River Outdoors Store located at 89 Main Street in Montpelier.

The 10k race serves as the Vermont Senior Games Association's 10k state championship road race for ages 50 and up. VSGA will award gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, to the top three male, female, and nonbinary finishers (age 50 and up) based on five-year age groups. The race is a state qualifier for the 2027 National Senior Games, held June 30 - July 11, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Runners age 50 and up (regardless of home state) are automatically dual registered (no extra cost) and eligible for Vermont Senior Games medals.

VSGA 5k Power Walk State Championship (ages 50 and up):

Rules: When power walking, the heel strikes first; one foot is always in contact with the ground; the knee is slightly bent (not rigid as in race walking); and shuffle running is not allowed. Please click here for power walk tips and visuals.

Vermont Senior Games medals go to the top three female, male, and nonbinary finishers in five-year age groups (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90 and up). VSGA volunteers will award medals to power walkers immediately after the power walkers cross the finish line.

New this year: The 5k power walk at the Capital City Stampede is the 2026 VSGA state championship power walk event.

Common Ground Center is thrilled to present our first ever 5k run/walk race!

Sign up to benefit the community and run towards a common goal—proceeds from this event will go towards supporting CGC’s adventure camp program, summer camps, and other initiatives aimed at ensuring that all children and families have the opportunity to learn, play, and thrive.

Our 5k will be held at Common Ground Center in Starksboro, and will weave through the property’s trails, fields, and between camp cabins. While the 5k will be moderately challenging and officially timed, our family-friendly 1k will be fun for all ages and abilities. Regardless of ability, background, or any other factor, we all run on Common Ground.

Come and see what CGC is all about, and take part in this local race that is sure to become a favorite. We look forward to connecting with more of our Vermont community, and to making out-of-state (or even out of country!) connections as well.

More information to come. Get ready to experience a little bit of camp magic!
