THE KILGORE HALF Also known as THE RUN FOR THE DEPLOYED

THE HISTORY OF THE CHRISTMAS EVE RUN

In 2009 Scott was deployed over Christmas. On Christmas Eve of that year he told me he was going to run a half marathon. When I asked him why, he said, because he was deployed and not able to be at home. The following year on a training run for a half marathon he and I were running together, he tells me he was going to do the same thing he did the year prior on Christmas Eve but from home this time. Knowing how our Oklahoma running community responds to a good cause and GOOD TIMES, we invited the Oklahoma City Southside Running Club to join us.

In 2010, our first year as hosts, we had 24 runners. Our second year we grew to 43 runners. Our last year as hosts (2012) in 11 degree temps, we had our best showing yet. 60 runners came to our home ready to run!!!!!

Since our move from OKC, we have hosted an event in Virginia Beach (in 2013), and our good friend Stacey Brown offered to carry on the tradition in Oklahoma City and host the run from her home there. My BFF in Auburn (Seattle), Washington hosts a contingent and our family members who gather in PA at Christmas also try and run. We have a former Okie Friend, also continuing the tradition in her new home state OREGON! We hope to keep it going year after year!

We thank you for caring about your service members, near and far. We appreciate you coming out each year, despite the conditions, in a showing of support for all they do and sacrifice. It's a small gesture, but one we feel is profoundly felt.

REGISTRATION IS NOT REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE, JUST SHOW UP WITH A FOOD DISH, RUNNING SHOES, AND A SMILE!

Be a part of history in a twilight track meet starring the best high school, collegiate, and elite runners in Oklahoma and beyond! Like last year's race, we'll hold races for all ages and abilities, with the night culminating in star-studded high school and elite fields attempting to break state records and legendary barriers. As always, we'll have plenty of heats, dozens of pacers, and the perfect environment to crush your personal best. The race will be free to spectators, and we'll have vendors and music to enjoy between and during the night's races!

Mile Night registrations and donations help support the Simon Greiner Program, which helps OKC public school students succeed in life and reach their full potential by creating new and expanded opportunities to participate and excel in cross country and track & field. Click here to learn more about the history and mission of the Simon Greiner Program.

    Order of events:

    • be bold. Running Elementary 800m - Two laps (half a mile) around the track for the little ones, with medals for all finishers courtesy of be bold. Running!

    • Arnold & Smith Law Middle School Mile

    • Scissortail Running Open Mile - Running veterans and novices alike take a turn to test their four-lap speed

    • OK Runner High School Mile - Join the hundreds of high schoolers who have set PRs at Mile Night

    • Simon Greiner Elite Mile* - The fastest one-mile race ever to be run on Oklahoma soil!

BACK AGAIN THIS YEAR - We will reserve one slot in the men's and women's elite fields so the fastest Oklahoma high schooler can compete alongside the best of the best!

We ask that all high schoolers still register only for the high school races. We will have target times for each heat based on the seeded entries, and pacers for as many heats as possible. After registration closes, the top high school boys' and girls' seed time from Oklahoma will be notified and moved to the elite field.

The Elite standards are 4:10 for men and 4:50 for women. All runners who do not meet the standards should register for the Open race. If there is still room in the elite fields after registration closes, we will reach out to the top seeds in the Open field about bumping you to the elite races.

Get ready to run for something bigger than the finish line at the 2026 Thunder Up Ultras—a community-powered ultrarunning event celebrating endurance, unity, and Thunder pride. Taking place on May 30, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., this unique event unfolds at the heart of Oklahoma City around the Paycom Center, home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, in support of the Thunder Community Foundation.

There’s no traditional race course here—just Thunder Loops. Runners will circle the Paycom Arena as many times as they choose, building their own ultra-distance experience loop by loop. Whether you’re aiming for your longest day on foot or just want to log meaningful miles with fellow fans, the distance is entirely up to you.

This is a true grassroots ultra:

    • No entry fee

    • No medals

    • No official timing

Each participant tracks their own time, distance, and number of loops, focusing on personal goals, community spirit, and the joy of running. The emphasis is on participation, perseverance, and supporting a great cause—not competition.

Come solo or bring friends, wear your Thunder gear proudly, and run as long—or as far—as you want. However many loops you complete, every step helps Thunder Up the Oklahoma City running community.

Run your distance. Run your way. Thunder Up. 🏀⚡🏃‍♂️
