The name stops people in their tracks: The Mortifying Ordeal of Running Club sounds like punishment, not pleasure. But Daniel and Aza, the Chicago couple behind this deliberately vulnerable running community, understand that the hardest part of running isn't the physical effort. It's being seen trying. Born from Daniel's own recovery through miles, the crew emerged from a simple realization: running's power is social. Around a dozen runners gather twice weekly at Magnífico Coffee Roasters, their headquarters and confession booth rolled into one warm space. Wednesday brings a 06:30 5K for those easing into the week. Fridays offer flexible staggered starts where faster runners circle back to collect newcomers, creating natural partnerships and ensuring no one runs alone. The crew's genius lies in its openness to all approaches: some members run twice weekly, others monthly, some try once and return months later. All receive equal welcome. In a city known for massive running communities and elite clubs, The Mortifying Ordeal chooses intimacy over scale, grounding runners in neighborhood streets rather than anonymous lakefront crowds.

Tortugas Run Club was founded in March 2021 by David, who created a running community where slower-paced runners finally feel welcome. The name honors a family photo of his mother and her sisters racing as "Las Tortugas." Now around 60 members strong, the crew gathers on Chicago's Lower West Side under captains Kristin, Chris, JLuis, and Chino. Their philosophy is clear: the back of the pack is a valid place to run from, and pace is never a measure of belonging. Every runner receives the same energy, and no one gets left behind. Every Sunday at 10:00, Tortugas Run Club meets at Harrison Park for their weekly group run, a tradition that feels exactly right for this tight-knit, genuinely inclusive crew.
