1k 5k Fun Run Run Virtual

On March 14, Brenau University will host its annual Dempsey Dash 5K and 1K Fun Run in memory of the university’s long-time executive vice president and CFO, Wayne Dempsey. The event benefits the Wayne W. Dempsey Endowed Scholarship Fund, first funded in Dempsey’s memory in 2014 by an anonymous donor.

Official Dempsey Dash T-shirts provided for all pre-registered participants by February 20. All other registered participants through race day will receive shirt while supplies last.

Certified race: Certification # is GA24002DJ

Why A Bowtie?

Those who knew Dr. Dempsey remember him as quite the clotheshorse. Always dressed to the nines, he had a reputation for impeccable style. He was almost always seen around campus in a well-coordinated suit and tie or a fashionable sport coat. Even his sons recall him as a younger man cutting the grass in a pair of penny loafers! It's unclear exactly how his signature bow tie habit began. His older son claims to have started wearing bow ties in the late 80s, forging his own fashion identity. The elder Dempsey, admiring the look, decided to give them a try himself. Taking it a step further, Dr. Dempsey even sought out lessons to learn how to tie them properly. He and his son spent hours practicing and mastering the skill. From there, the trademark look was born. Dr. Dempsey frequently sported bow ties in his daily professional life, and they became his calling card. After his passing, his sons inherited his tie collection, and one continues to wear the bow ties today. In this way, the bow tie

has become a unique and touching way to remember a great and unique man

When to pick up participant bags or shirts?

    TRIATHLON COURSE:

Swim Course: The 600 m swim starts near the rowing tower and finishes at the boat ramp and is marked by large START and FINISH signs. Swimmers will swim 100 m out to the 1st buoy, make a right turn, swim parallel to the shore for 400 m, then make a right turn for the final 100 m. The wetsuit ruling will be made when the USAT Official takes the race day water temperature reading on the morning of the race. Wetsuits are legal when the water temperature is below 78 degrees. The swim portion of the race will be conducted in a time trial start with athletes lining up in race number sequence and starting every 5 seconds.

Bike Course: The 14.7 mile bike course follows the beautiful roads of northern Hall County. Riders will turn right out of the park and follow Clarks Bridge Road north for just over 6 miles. Turning left on Bogus Road, riders enter a 4 mile loop with rolling hills and green pastures on either side. The left turn at Napone Rd. brings the course back to Clarks Bridge Rd. where a right turn sends riders back to the park. Watch your speed as you approach the left turn into the park as it is a slight downhill approach.

The course is marked with directional signs and mile markers every two miles. All turns will be staffed with Tri the Parks personnel and uniformed Sheriff officers, but it is the racer’s responsibility to know the course. This course is open to traffic, so in addition to course turns, Sheriff personnel will be stationed at other significant intersections. Please do not turn just because a patrol car is at the intersection, look for signage and Tri the Parks personnel.

Run Course: The run is a 5k course that exits transition near the boat ramp wraps around the parking lot and turns left on Clarks Bridge Rd. Runners will remain in the left lane on Clarks Bridge to the run turn around where they will return along the same route. Upon returning to the park runners will turn right into the parking lot and wrap around transition to the finish line which is located on the plaza above the rowing grandstands.

    DUATHLON COURSE:

First run leg starts near the transition swim entrance by the boat ramp. The run circles the transition parking lot and then follows the run route described above. The bike leg and second run leg are the same as the triathlon course.

    AQUABIKE COURSE:

All Aquabikers start in the time trial swim start and complete the same swim and bike course as the triathletes. After completing the bike course, athletes should rack their bike and exit transition with the runners (opposite the bike in and out) and go around transition to the finish line. Aquabikers will find a green wristband in their packets to be worn during the race to help distinguish you.

    COURSE MAP:

Course maps are available below and will also be included in your race packet.

    PARKING:

Parking will open at 6:00 AM and will be on a first-come, first serve basis and volunteer attendants will direct you to a space. Parking will begin with the parking lot that contains transition. Overflow parking will be across the road on the boathouse side. A tunnel is available to use to safely cross under the road to get to transition. Please remember to bring your photo ID with you as it could be a long walk to race check-in/transition.
