Ovarian Cancer

About 21,010 women in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2026 — that’s roughly one diagnosis every 25 minutes. In Oregon and Washington, the American Cancer Society estimates 1,610 new diagnoses. These are our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, partners, colleagues, and friends.

Ovarian cancer remains the deadliest gynecologic cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death among women in the United States. Because symptoms are often subtle and easily dismissed, nearly three-quarters of cases are diagnosed after the cancer has spread beyond the ovaries. While the overall five-year survival rate is about 50 percent, survival drops significantly — to around 30 percent — when the disease is diagnosed at a distant stage.

Call to Action: Teal Ribbon Fun Walk

These statistics make one thing clear: awareness matters. That’s why OCAOSW is hosting the 4th Annual Teal Ribbon Fun Walk on June 27, 2026. There is currently no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer, which makes education about symptoms and risk factors critical. When ovarian cancer is detected at an earlier stage, survival rates improve significantly — and informed communities are better equipped to act.

This 1.5-mile walk at the Oregon Zoo brings together survivors, families, friends, and advocates in visible support of those impacted by ovarian cancer. It’s a chance to show up, stand together, and move the conversation forward.

Goals

  • Promote education and awareness about ovarian cancer

  • Unite our local ovarian cancer community, including survivors, friends, families, medical professionals, and advocates, for a common goal

  • Raise funds for OCAOSW - donate here
