10k 5k Run Trail

The Wild Irish Run, held on March 14, 2026, will mark its 48th Anniversary.

In 1979, “The Wild Irish Run” was called the Lake Guntersville 10,000 hosted by the Lake Guntersville Track Club. This course became sanctioned in 1980 by the Road Runners Club of America and added .2 miles to be an official 10K course. In 1984, the race was held on Saint Patrick’s Day and subtitled the “1984 Saint Patrick’s Wild Irish Run”; and the “Wild Irish Run” name stuck.

This race has earned the reputation of being one of the oldest 10K races in Alabama and has been chosen as an Alabama TopTen Event in past years. This all-paved fast course with small rolling hills takes you through downtown Guntersville and a scenic tour along beautiful Lake Guntersville (USATF certified course # AL12015JD).

Within the last 10 years, due to the popularity to the shorter runs, we implemented and had certified a 5K course into our Wild Irish Run event. Our 5K course is an all-paved surface that takes you through a scenic trail along Lake Guntersville (USATF certified course # AL19009JE).

The Wild Irish Run is now hosted by the City of Guntersville Recreation Department and is held on the Saturday of or the closest Saturday before Saint Patrick’s Day.

The top three overall female and male finishers will win the Wild Irish Run trophy and medal.

Age division medals will be awarded to the top three female and male finishers. T-shirts and other goodies will be provided in your race packet.

The race is headquartered at the City of Guntersville Recreation Center located at 1500 Sunset Drive. More info at 256-571-7590.

Packet pick-up will be held at the recreation center on Friday, March 13, 2026 from 3:00p.m. – 6:00p.m. and again on race day, March 14, 2026 from 5:00a.m. – 6:30a.m.

The 10K race starts at 7:00a.m. sharp with the 5K race starting at/around 7:05a.m.

Year 7 with new and exciting changes! This annual event hosted by Kidtopia Playground Association, takes place at Grant Town Park located at 401 Park Rd, Grant AL 35747.

This event began in memory of the late Dan Robinson whose love for God and country was known by many throughout our community. Dan was instrumental in the formation of our non-profit organization and laid the groundwork for the development of Kidtopia playground.

1st : This year we have updated our name so everyone knows exactly why we host this event, to benefit the playground! For 19 years this playground has served the families of Grant and surrounding areas with a wonderful place to gather and play. We want that to continue for the next 50 years, and we can't do that without wonderful sponsors and community!

2nd : You asked and we listened, this year we will run the 10K race first and the 5K race after that, for our dedicated runners who want to do 15K!

3rd: In 2025, our community lost 7 year old Gracie Morris suddenly and our children who went to school with, and cheered with Gracie wanted to do something to honor her, so all of this year's proceeds are going to an expansion dedicated to her memory!

Back by popular demand: CASH Prizes!

That's right, if you place as follows, you will be awarded with not only a cool finisher's medal but some cold, hard cash.

    1st place 5k / 10k - $200

    2nd place 5k / 10k - $100

    3rd place 5k / 10k - $50

The 5K and 10K: The 5k is a USTAF certified walk/run race and both races will begin at Grant City Park, travel through the scenic mountain town of Grant. The course is mostly flat with a few inclines, including "Cardiac Hill" at the end. Volunteers and directional signs will be strategically posted along the routes to help guide runners in the right direction. A water and first aid station will be set up near the halfway point of the 5K, which is approximately mile 3.75 of the 10K. These races will end back at Grant City Park in front of Kidtopia playground. Rehydration & nutritious snacks will be available before and after the races.

Please note that you must register by April 17th to be guaranteed a t-shirt!
