This 10-mile swim follows the path of North Carolina’s devastating Great Flood of 1916 on the Catawba River. The storm's fierce blow prompted the construction of dams and, subsequently, the region's electrification. The race name is derived from news and film accounts of the event.

Unlike the epic conditions that sparked that historic event, you’ll enjoy a well-marked course in the Catawba River and mild conditions. You’ll pass 5 scenic bridges and railroad trestles. Safety is paramount with boat and kayak support. Shuttle service is included.

Course Distance: 200 YARD SWIM – 8 MILE BIKE – 2 MILE RUN

TRIATHLON (Swim, bike, and run and relay option):

Swim: Your event kicks off with a 200 yard swim in the indoor pool of the Harris YMCA. Swimmers will be self seeded according to the swim ability chart. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with lining up for the swim. You will be provided with a swim cap if you choose to wear it. After the swim, you'll experience the exhilaration of exiting the pool to the sound of cheers as you make your way to the transition area.

Bike: The bike is 8 miles on a 2 loop course. The bike course showcases the beautiful South Park area of Charlotte. It begins with a nice downhill section on Quail Hollow Road. The bike course has 5 major right-hand turns and includes Gleneagles Rd, Park Rd, and Sharon Rd.

Run: The majority of the run course keeps runners on the YMCA campus and close to the spectators. It’s an out-and-back course that includes quiet neighborhood roads. The great thing is that you’ll be able to share the energy with your fellow athletes as you approach the finish line!

Finish line party: Celebrate with your family and friends and take in your accomplishment!
