On the Thursday before Labor Day Weekend of 2026, ultramarathoners will once again descend on Fred Deadman Park in Manchester, Tennessee. Led by a contingent of wheezing geezers, over a hundred of America’s finest foot warriors will circle the famed Deadman Mile for days on end in September of 2026.
All runners 41 and over will be allotted a number of hours equal to those hard-earned years of age in which to accumulate as many miles as possible. All the kids, 40 years, and below, will compete over the final 40 hours of the race. The winner will be the runner with the most miles accumulated by the finish. In contrast to most ultras, where the old guys must settle for a place at the rear, if they can make the time limit at all, the ARFTA is dominated by the super veterans of the sport. In 2025, 1 participant 90 +, 12 participants 80+, and 35 participants 70 years old and over competed in this event. Randy Ellis 73, and Steve Troxel 66, completed more than 200 miles! We had 63 participants completing over 100 miles were 70 and older! This is one race where the older guys are right in the running up until the very end. The footspeed may have diminished with the passing of the years, but the fires of competition still burn bright.
Of course it is not the competition which has made this event an instant classic. It is the stories. In the perfect setting of a one mile loop through the park, today’s ultrarunners have the opportunity to spend time with the legends and heroes of the long ago past of the sport. And the old guys and gals have the opportunity to rekindle old friendships (and rivalries) and to rehash the old days. The stories they have to tell are not tales immortalized on the internet, instead they exist only in the memories of those who were there. For all the hundreds of miles that are logged, and the fierce battles sometimes waged for position, it is the celebration of life atmosphere that has made the ARFTA a must-do event. Fathers and mothers sharing miles with daughters and sons as well as grandparents sharing miles with grandsons and granddaughters; these are moments too special to miss.
We rent most of the park for the duration of the event, and among the features of the race are: Ice is provided for purchase at the ICE HOUSE on the premises for $3.00 per bag. Usually set up next to the building not far from the start/finish area. Hot meals served every 6 hours (this is not aid station food, but fine southern cuisine catered by the local Cracker Barrel.) Additional meal plans may be purchased for crew members. The meals come prepackaged for each individual with whatever is on the menu that day. A mealtime rush is not necessary as you may take it with you to your tent or eat at the pavilions. A friendly reminder to allow the aid station volunteers time to set it up before you stop by to grab and go. We do not have the facility to set up multiple options or dietary needs.
There are real indoor bathrooms located on the course (the value of which cannot be overstated in a multiday run!) There will also be portapotties next to the building after you pass the start/finish line and two on the backside of the loop.
Accommodations are available at a full range of motels within 1 mile of the park, for crews, or runners wishing to sleep in a “real bed.” Ample TENT camping is available on site, with prime camping spots situated around the Deadman Mile.
This is a small park with limited parking. The course is in the parking lot as well as through the park. We have the pavilions reserved but not the whole park itself. Locals come enjoy the park throughout the event. Baseball and tennis is also going on at the same time. They have been very graciuos each year and share with us!
With that being said. RV Campers! We are asked every year about campers. A camper is allowed in the back parking area near the back ball field. See the map attached to this site. IF YOUR CAMPER FITS IN ONE PARKING SPOT THEN IT IS ALLOWED. The standard parking space is 8.5 feet wide by 18 feet long to give you an idea of the size.
There is plenty of camping space to set up a tent and all of your supplies. Not on the course itself but close to it!
There is a facebook group for the ARFTA: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1443235495936999/
Or you can send your questions below.
Any runners over 70 years of age with financial limitations precluding their entry should e-mail me, so that we can work something out. This is your day(s) in the sun, and we want to see you here! Last year we had 38 starters the age of 70 and older. I think that may be a record! 53 Runners logged in excess of 100 miles, 5 of which were 80 and older!! Last year 2 participants went 200 plus. Last year Doyle Carpenter, Harry Strohm, John Price, and Keith Dunn completed their 11th ARFTA! However, you do not need to aim for such a lofty goal, if you do not wish. It is perfectly all right to just come to share the weekend with your peers. What we most want is to see you here.

The Capt. Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial hosts the annual Top Gun Night Run 6k on Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Victory Recreation Park in Smyrna. The 3.7 mile course includes the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport and Smyrna Municipal golf course with the finish line at the memorial. Spectators and runners will enjoy live music and vendors in the park. The run will be chip-timed and USATF certified and limited to only 650 participants.
On June 2, 2016, our nation was deeply impacted by the plane crash of USMC Captain Jeff Kuss during the US Navy Blue Angels performance at the Great Tennessee Air Show, in Smyrna. Following this tragedy, the Smyrna community and Blue Angels fans around the country mourned and showed an outpouring of support for the Kuss Family. Town of Smyrna officials called upon the community to help establish a living memorial in tribute to the life, honorable service, and high ideals exhibited by Captain Kuss. The illuminated memorial is located in Smyrna’s Lee Victory Park along the beautiful greenway across from the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport. As centerpiece to the memorial, the National Naval Aviation Museum has generously provided, on permanent loan to the Town of Smyrna, recently retired Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, BUNO 163498, which depicts Captain Kuss’ plane number 6.
Proceeds from the annual Top Gun Night Run 6k are applied directly to ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the Captain Jeff Kuss USMC Memorial in addition to funding the Memorial Scholarship created in 2023.
What's a trash panda? It's a fun term for a raccoon...because they sort of look like giant pandas (in their coloring) and they sort of look like red pandas (which sort of look like raccoons) and also, they like to dig through the trash. It's also the slightly-bratty-but-still-kinda-cute little sister race to our perennial powerhouse, the spring Raccoon Mountain races.
START/FINISH: Laurel Point on Raccoon Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee
STUFF:
There will be swag. We have TECHNICALLY surpassed the amount of swag we ordered for this year, but in order to open up more spots to participate in the race, we have some alternative options for swag. If the swag item is something you're just going to toss in the trash, we’d rather you take the alternative swag. Tossing swag in the trash is raccoon behavior, not human behavior! We want to make sure you get something that will make your precious little heart happy.
Laser burned wooden finisher medal. Produced by a real, live, actual Tennessean. Maybe that Tennessean will dress up like a raccoon to burn them. Maybe that Tennessean will eat out of the trash can, in the name of authenticity. You never know!
Because we discontinued our Spring Raccoon Mountain race, and our favorite part of that race was the medals with your name on them, we're bringing that to this race. That's right, however you want your medal personalized, it'll be that way on race day! Burned right into the wood. Literally NOBODY ELSE will have a medal exactly like yours. (You MUST be registered by August 31st to guarantee your personalized medal. We’ll personalize what we can get to after that.)
The most stocked up aid stations you've ever encountered. We won't even make you root around in a trash can for any of it. We won't even pull any of it OUT of a trash can. It's fresh!
We have restocked our Into The Forest I Go mugs, as well as our "Stay Trashy Chattanooga" and "I Run So I Can Eat Garbage" shirts, we've got all new shirts (long sleeve and short sleeve), tank tops, and hoodies and other apparel too! (We don't give these away as swag because everyone has a preference, and we also don't get the cheapest shirt known to man, nor do we cover the back with logos.) We will also have the bargain items out!
You can also register for future races here, with a little discount for registering in cash. Later this year, we have Spookasaurus and the winter Grab Bag, and Freeze Your Half Off in January is also open for registration. We prefer cash but can also take credit cards, Venmo, and CashApp.
COURSE:
We will be using only the trails that connect to Laurel Point. The loop is a little bit more than 3.1-ish miles long. We'll have an out-and-back section marked for each distance to get you to the appropriate mileage. The 5K is a little longer than 3.1 miles, which is why it is a 5-ish K, and if you're not cool with -ish measurements, you probably won't enjoy running/walking/hiking/dorking around with us.
The trail is technical in that there are roots and rocks, but it's not particularly difficult. There are no water crossings. Trail shoes are useful, but not necessary. Hundreds of people have done this race without trail shoes. Beginners, hikers, children of all ages are welcome, and we are supportive to EVERYONE. There is an eight hour time limit for all distances. Yes, ALL distances. You must be out on your last lap by 3:45pm. (That's because the mountain closes, not because we're meanie pantsers.) We don't DNF; we'll give you a finish time for the distance you did complete.
AID STATION:
AKA, what we're known for. There will be one aid station mid-course, and another one at the start/finish/end of the 5-ishK lap. So you're never more than 2 miles from food/drinks/frivolity. that you'll pass on each lap. At the aid station will be Gatorade, water, Coke, Mountain Dew, energy gels, a variety of chips, candy, and cookies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pickles and pickle juice shots, and a full array of non-food supplies like Vaseline, salt pills, etc.
Please bring your own painkillers if you think you will need them (our insurance prohibits us giving any painkillers to you) and use them responsibly!
You are welcome to leave a drop bag at the designated area near the aid station. Feel free to bring a chair to put your drop bag on, a full change of clothes, your teddy bear, whatever you think you'll need to make it through your chosen race distance. Pop up tents with your crew are fine too. We have plenty of space.
Our crew is also known for their unparalleled support. We'll get you to the finish line if you let us help you! We drain and bandage blisters (we will even prep your feet BEFORE the race in an attempt to prevent those blisters from ever happening!), we keep you cooled down with ice, we work on cramps, we give great pep talks and we'll talk you out of quitting with some tough love if that's what it takes. We're here to help you, just like we've helped thousands of people before you. We consider you family, not just another runner with a number like many races.
We're not saying our family isn't a little bit dysfunctional from time to time, but it keeps things interesting, doesn't it? Seriously though, all we want is to get you to the finish line and we'll do what it takes to help you get there, and we'll be waiting there to celebrate with you!
Packet Pickup:
Saturday, September 13, 2025, 7:30am - 8:25am at Laurel Point on Raccoon Mountain.
We might do a "quick and dirty" packet pickup on Friday night. We might not. Depends on how big the race gets. We'll email you if we decide to do it.
This race will be timed and results will be posted. You will be emailed a link.
IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!! IMPORTANT!!! IMPORTANT!!!
This is NOT a slick, corporate, super-professionally produced race. We're still the same grassrootsy, laid-back people we've always been. We cater to the non-competitive, fun-loving runners of the world. We are a bunch of dorks that can measure a course and decorate it with silly raccoon signs and we do our best to make it fun. If you are expecting Ironman-levels of infrastructure and an army of volunteers, you aren't going to get it from us. You have been warned and we won't take you seriously if you complain that we're not like a typical race, because, well, that's never been a secret. If you want to have a good time in an atmosphere that is more 'giant group run' and less 'super professional NYC marathon' or 'snooty judgmental if-you-are-not-fast-we-won't-be-nice-to-you'-type thing, we'd love to invite you to join us! If you're only worried about running super fast and not about enjoying your experience and being around good humans, this is NOT the race for you. We welcome the fast AND
the slow, we just don't want anyone to be disappointed in what they get when they register, so we don't keep it a secret that we value camaraderie over competition! And we make ZERO apologies for that.

Course Description
5 Mile Swim: Around Hobbs Island
This is a five mile circumnavigation of Hobbs Island that will start at the public boat ramp, 1000 Hobbs Island Rd SE, between Forrest Paddle Boarding (swimmer/spectator parking) and Pit Stop Boat Ramp Public Parking (volunteer parking). Swimmers will enter the water via a boat ramp on the shoreline and will swim clockwise around Hobbs Island and finish at the same location as the start. Because the first few miles and the last few hundred meters are against the river current, this swim may take longer than a typical 5 mile swim in the pool.
2 Mile Swim Event
This is a two mile out and back that will start at the same public boat ramp as the 5 mile swim start. Start will be just after the 5 mile swim start. Swimmers will enter the water via a boat ramp on the shoreline. Swimmers will swim upstream approximately 1 mile and then turn around. The finish location will be the same as the start. Because the first mile is against the river current, this swim will take longer than a typical two mile swim in the pool. Please be aware that this is NOT an event for beginner swimmers. You should be able to swim 2.5 miles continuously in a pool before tackling this 2 mile event.
1 Mile Swim Event
This is a one mile out and back that will start at the same public boat ramp as the 5 and 2 mile swim start. Start will be just after the 2 mile swim start. Swimmers will enter the water via ramps on the shoreline. Swimmers will proceed upstream 0.5 mile and then turn around at the turnaround buoy. The finish location will be the same as the start. Because the first half mile is against the river current, this swim will take longer than a typical one mile swim in the pool.
Current and Time Cutoffs
Current in the Tennessee River normally varies greatly because this stretch of the river is controlled by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) via flow rates from the Guntersville Dam. However, every year we submit a flow reduction request to TVA for the race. NEVERTHELESS, they do not have to honor this, and they may not, and we have minimal input into this decision. We are grateful that they are often able to do this for our safety and comfort. For your information, typical TVA-adjusted flow rates for this race in the past have been ~19,000 cubic feet per second, which translates to a very reasonable current for most open water swimmers. That said, be prepared to swim longer than a typical 1, 2 or 5 mile swim in the pool. The 5 mile time cutoff is the tip of the island at 3.5 hrs or 12 noon and finish by 5 hours or 1:30 pm. No time cutoffs for 1 or 2 milers.
Temperature
Water temperatures are typically between 75 to 83 degrees. We encourage you to stay well hydrated before and after, select an appropriate pace for your temperature and comfort. If water temperature exceeds 87 degrees (extremely unlikely given historical conditions), we will cancel the swim due to safety.
Spectators
There is a small spot near the swim start/exit for spectator, however, it is very rocky and uneven terrain, so please use caution. There is also viewing at Old Madison County Marina, which is more stable, but not accessible from the swim start/exit by foot.
RULES
Swimmers must be at least 13 years of age.
Swimmers may wear wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower.
If the water temperature is between 78.1 – 83.9 degrees, competitors may wear wetsuits but will not be eligible for awards.
If the water temperature is 84 degrees or above, participants may NOT wear wetsuits.
Swimmers must wear issued swim cap.
The following items are NOT allowed: fins, paddles, gloves, floatation devices, or audio devices.
Participants may use any stroke to propel themselves thru the water and may tread water or float, if needed.
You may touch or hang onto a kayak for safety with no penalty against awards, but making forward progress with a kayak will be grounds for disqualification from awards. No touching other people other than incidental contact unless for safety reasons. Have your kayaker carry hydration and nutrition, and also carry extra nutrition with your kayaker in case this swim takes longer than you planned.
KAYAKERS
ALL FIVE MILE SWIMMERS ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN KAYAKER TO ACCOMPANY THEM. If you do not have a kayaker, you will not be allowed to swim. This rule is for your safety as the river will be open to boat traffic. Boats will be unable to see you if you are swimming alone.
YOUR KAYAKER WILL NEED TO REGISTER ON THE SAME REGISTRATION SITE WHICH IS THE SAME ONE THE SWIMMERS REGISTER ON (It will show a $0 balance at the end of registration). and specify who they are kayaking for (it will show a $0 balance at the end of registration). Your kayaker will receive a race t-shirt as they are a vital part of this race. All of this is included in the race fee that the swimmer pays. We have a very limited number of kayaks donated by various members of the local endurance community that can be allotted on a first-come first-serve basis, so, swimmer or kayaker, indicate in your registration if you need one.
KAYAKERS MUST HAVE AND WEAR LIFEJACKETS AT ALL TIMES.
5 MILE KAYAKERS ESPECIALLY: Here is a blog post by a friend of ours who is a very experienced open water marathon swimmer, sharing her tips and experiences on how to support your swimmer best. We recommend you review this! It’s simply fantastic! Thanks Sydne Didier!

Welcome to the Autumn Chase Fun Run: Kids Run For Kids
a Huntsville Track Club event
presented by The Huntsville Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter
Since 1981, the annual Autumn Chase Fun Run has been a 1-mile fun run promoting healthy habits in our community's youth through running with a local philanthropic impact! This is a FREE event and all Preschool, Elementary & Middle (PreK-8th) school age children are welcome. School Faculty are also welcome to join in the fun and we encourage you to promote this event through your school and get all children engaged.
The Huntsville Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter along with Huntsville Track Club are excited to provide our community and opportunity to get outside and give all children (PreK-8) in the Huntsville and surrounding areas the chance the run for the Autumn Chase Fun Run.
Help Us Support the Huntsville Hospital Pediatric Audiology Unit and local kid’s charities!
While the Autumn Chase Fun Run's focus is promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for our kids, the proceeds from sponsorships and donations go to benefit Huntsville Hospital's Pediatric Audiology Unit, along with local kids charitable organizations. If you would like to donate you have a couple of options!
Option 1: Online Donations. You can donate money to the unit via Paypal or Venmo!
Paypal: [email protected]
