Marathon Description
There is a reason race spectators chant “You Survived the Savage Gulf Marathon!” once you cross the finish line. This marathon is known to be one of the toughest in the Southeast. The marathon features two steep descents and climbs into and out of the Savage Gulf on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Along the route you will encounter challenging terrain with a variety of beautiful scenery including large stone formations, waterfalls, historic sites, wildflowers and old growth forest. To qualify to participate in this race you must have completed a marathon or longer race, this isn’t your average trail run with finishing times ranging between 4.5 hours to 8 hours. You are guaranteed to challenge yourself with this very grueling and scenic marathon. Join us at the Savage Gulf Marathon for 26.2 miles of rugged terrain as you trek up and down the steep gorge known as Savage Gulf, cross several streams, and run along the edge of the bluff. This is a technical race you don’t want to miss.

About The Park
Savage Gulf is a 14,357 acre State Natural Area that contains some of the most spectacular natural rock formations in Tennessee. Purchased by the state in 1973 to protect one of the last known stands of virgin timber in the Eastern United States, Savage Gulf has 55 miles of trails and ten primitive campsites. The Savage Gulf Ranger Station is the eastern access point to the Savage Gulf-Stone Door trail system that traverses the most rugged and scenic areas of the South Cumberland complex. The Stone Door Ranger Station is within the Savage Gulf area and is accessible off State Highway 56 near Beersheba Springs. It is named for the Great Stone Door, a 150-foot deep crevice at the crest of the Plateau. It is the western access for the Savage Gulf-Stone Door trails network.

Other
Medical Care/First Aid**Important: Trail running is dangerous and can lead to injuries or death. There are portions of this trail which will require your focus and patience. If you're willing to accept these risks and still be humble, then we welcome you with open arms (this is not meant to dissuade you, only to be upfront and honest). Please note that we do not have a medical staff, but can provide you with basic first-aid once we get to you in the field. In short, you're on your own and responsible for your safety. In the event of a rescue, runners will incur all costs of such a rescue from the state. However, we will have basic first aid sweepers that can help you out if you need an extra hand.Common QuestionsCan I bring my dog? Yes, as long as it is leashed. What is the elevation per 13 miles? Around 3,500ft.Is this a full half and marathon distance? Yes, it is. We actually think it is slightly over due to the new trail. More trails for your money!!Is there camping available? Yes, but please check with TN parks and reserve a spot through their site. How technical is the trail? It is not easy but according to human mountain goat John Hardin, “I personally feel like it’s not too technical. There are a few small sections where you really need to watch your feet but that's about it.” Take that with a grain of salt knowing what you know about the Cumberland Plateau Stage Race and Music City Trail Ultra!

On the Thursday before Labor Day Weekend of 2026, ultramarathoners will once again descend on Fred Deadman Park in Manchester, Tennessee. Led by a contingent of wheezing geezers, over a hundred of America’s finest foot warriors will circle the famed Deadman Mile for days on end in September of 2026.
All runners 41 and over will be allotted a number of hours equal to those hard-earned years of age in which to accumulate as many miles as possible. All the kids, 40 years, and below, will compete over the final 40 hours of the race. The winner will be the runner with the most miles accumulated by the finish. In contrast to most ultras, where the old guys must settle for a place at the rear, if they can make the time limit at all, the ARFTA is dominated by the super veterans of the sport. In 2025, 1 participant 90 +, 12 participants 80+, and 35 participants 70 years old and over competed in this event. Randy Ellis 73, and Steve Troxel 66, completed more than 200 miles! We had 63 participants completing over 100 miles were 70 and older! This is one race where the older guys are right in the running up until the very end. The footspeed may have diminished with the passing of the years, but the fires of competition still burn bright.
Of course it is not the competition which has made this event an instant classic. It is the stories. In the perfect setting of a one mile loop through the park, today’s ultrarunners have the opportunity to spend time with the legends and heroes of the long ago past of the sport. And the old guys and gals have the opportunity to rekindle old friendships (and rivalries) and to rehash the old days. The stories they have to tell are not tales immortalized on the internet, instead they exist only in the memories of those who were there. For all the hundreds of miles that are logged, and the fierce battles sometimes waged for position, it is the celebration of life atmosphere that has made the ARFTA a must-do event. Fathers and mothers sharing miles with daughters and sons as well as grandparents sharing miles with grandsons and granddaughters; these are moments too special to miss.
We rent most of the park for the duration of the event, and among the features of the race are: Ice is provided for purchase at the ICE HOUSE on the premises for $3.00 per bag. Usually set up next to the building not far from the start/finish area. Hot meals served every 6 hours (this is not aid station food, but fine southern cuisine catered by the local Cracker Barrel.) Additional meal plans may be purchased for crew members. The meals come prepackaged for each individual with whatever is on the menu that day. A mealtime rush is not necessary as you may take it with you to your tent or eat at the pavilions. A friendly reminder to allow the aid station volunteers time to set it up before you stop by to grab and go. We do not have the facility to set up multiple options or dietary needs.
There are real indoor bathrooms located on the course (the value of which cannot be overstated in a multiday run!) There will also be portapotties next to the building after you pass the start/finish line and two on the backside of the loop.
Accommodations are available at a full range of motels within 1 mile of the park, for crews, or runners wishing to sleep in a “real bed.” Ample TENT camping is available on site, with prime camping spots situated around the Deadman Mile.
This is a small park with limited parking. The course is in the parking lot as well as through the park. We have the pavilions reserved but not the whole park itself. Locals come enjoy the park throughout the event. Baseball and tennis is also going on at the same time. They have been very graciuos each year and share with us!
With that being said. RV Campers! We are asked every year about campers. A camper is allowed in the back parking area near the back ball field. See the map attached to this site. IF YOUR CAMPER FITS IN ONE PARKING SPOT THEN IT IS ALLOWED. The standard parking space is 8.5 feet wide by 18 feet long to give you an idea of the size.
There is plenty of camping space to set up a tent and all of your supplies. Not on the course itself but close to it!
There is a facebook group for the ARFTA: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1443235495936999/
Or you can send your questions below.
Any runners over 70 years of age with financial limitations precluding their entry should e-mail me, so that we can work something out. This is your day(s) in the sun, and we want to see you here! Last year we had 38 starters the age of 70 and older. I think that may be a record! 53 Runners logged in excess of 100 miles, 5 of which were 80 and older!! Last year 2 participants went 200 plus. Last year Doyle Carpenter, Harry Strohm, John Price, and Keith Dunn completed their 11th ARFTA! However, you do not need to aim for such a lofty goal, if you do not wish. It is perfectly all right to just come to share the weekend with your peers. What we most want is to see you here.

The last annual Heart of the South Road Race (400 and 350 miles)
The HOTS is an adventure for only the most daring. The runners will assemble on Wednesday morning, park their vehicles in a cornfield atop Sand Mountain in North Georgia, and board tour buses. The only thing they will know about their destination is that it will be between 350 and 400 miles away. Once they arrive, they will be able to access maps of the course they will take to get them back to their vehicles. After an overnight stay in a hotel, the field will be bused to the start the following morning. From there, with only the supplies they can carry or obtain along the way, they have 10.5 days to get back. Twice daily tracking will be maintained, and runners wishing to drop will be transported back to their vehicles. Finishers will be shuttled with their vehicles to motels near the finish for a safe sleep before getting behind the wheel. There is no greater freedom, than being totally alone on the open road, relying only on your wits, your skill, and your physical ability to cover ground in order to reach the finish line. Come experience it for yourself.

About
The Vol-State is not just another ultramarathon. It is much more than that. The Vol-State is a journey, an adventure, and an exploration of inner space. It begins with a ferry ride across the Mississippi River, from Missouri to Kentucky, and finishes at “the Rock,” high atop Sand Mountain in Northeast Georgia. What lies in between are 314 miles of the great unknown. From the time the Vol-Stater steps off the Ferry, until they reach the Rock, they are totally reliant upon their own physical and mental resources. For the next three to ten days, in the face of the heat and humidity of July in Tennessee , the Vol-Stater must make their way on foot, along highways and backroads, from one small town to the next, over hills and across rivers, up mountains and down long valleys, all the while accounting for all of their most basic needs; “what will I eat?” “When will I find water?” Where will I sleep?” Success is not guaranteed. There are no aid stations, teeming with volunteers waiting to tend to your every need and encourage you to continue. There are just miles and miles of empty road. Your friends can follow your progress from afar, but no pacers can carry your burden for you. If you do encounter another runner, theirs is the same desperate plight as your own. You will have doubts. Finishing will often seem an unfathomable dream. Your worst enemy may become the knowledge that an air conditioned ride to your car at the finish (in the dreaded seat of disgrace”) is but a phone call away. Many will fail. But, for those who find the steely will and muster the sheer dogged tenacity to overcome the impossible obstacles, and reach the rock on foot, the Vol-State can be a transcendental experience. No words can adequately describe the sense of combined relief and amazement to be experienced at the Rock. No one can explain the regret that this incredible journey has actually come to an end. Former King, Barry Crumrine probably summed up the Vol-State experience as well as it can be put into words;“I found in myself something that I never knew was there.”
