Welcome to the third annual PANS/PANDAS Awareness event in Vermont! Join us for a 5K fun run and walk along in Burlington on October 11, 2025 to raise awareness for PANS/PANDAS here in Vermont—an often-overlooked autoimmune disorder affecting children and young adults. We’re calling on our citizens of Vermont to join us in raising awareness and moving towards change and healing.
Description
This is a family-friendly run/walk in Burlington. Everyone is welcome: from regular runners ready to race to walkers looking for some good community fun. We'll have a DJ, snacks, cool t-shirts, medals, prizes, and some resources and experts to help us learn about this important condition facing our kids.
We are again partnering with The Alex Manfull Fund (TAMF), a New Hampshire-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that supports awareness, education, and research to further understand the incidence, etiology, and best treatment of post-infectious neuroimmune disorders (aka PANDAS, PANS, and Autoimmune Encephalitis) with an emphasis on their manifestation in Adolescents and Young Adults. TAMF has established a fellowship fund at Dartmouth Hospital’s Neuroimmune Psychiatric Disorder (NIPD) clinic. Net proceeds from our event will be given to NIPD in support of their clinic.
What are PANS and PANDAS?
PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections) occur when a child’s immune response to an infection causes inflammation in the brain. The inflammation can cause the sudden onset of behavioral, neurological, and personality changes. The effects of PANS/PANDAS on children and their families are devastating—yet these conditions are still relatively unknown in Vermont, making diagnosis and treatment extremely difficult. Learn more about this condition and its symptoms.
A note from Gaskell family
Welcome to the PANDAS/PANS 5K! We are a family of 5 living in Burlington looking to transform the hardship of our own PANDAS journey into a beacon of hope and progress for others.
In September 2022, at age 8, our son experienced a sudden, acute onset of extreme neuropsychiatric symptoms. As his parents, we sought help from doctors, psychiatrists, and local resources but to no avail; his condition continued to spiral. Thanks to one of our son's former teachers, who witnessed our struggle and had read about PANDAS on Facebook, we got a first glimpse of what could be happening. In June 2023, a clinic at Dartmouth Hospital diagnosed our son with PANDAS. Since then, treatment and recovery have been long and arduous, however finally—now almost two years later—his condition has improved significantly. With a bit of blue sky returning for our family, we’ve emerged with a clear mission: to help others living with this devastating condition.

Clinics will be tailored for novice to intermediate skill levels. Each clinic will be capped at 20 riders, with spots reserved for individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) participants. Clinic check-in will be at the Catamount Outdoor Family Center starting at 2:00 PM, and the clinics will start at 3:00. Don't have a cyclocross bike? That's ok! Your gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike is good enough to get you started!
THE VENUE: The Catamount Outdoor Family Center (COFC) is in Williston, Vermont, just outside of Burlington, with beautiful views of the Green Mountains. COFC began as a cross country ski center in 1978. It quickly expanded to include mountain bike and trail running, and now also hosts a variety of youth outdoor and educational programming. It has a rich history of hosting local, regional, and international level bike racing, including UCI cyclocross and mountain bike events. Racing GMCX will directly support Catamount's ongoing outdoor efforts!
Take on the Devil After the devil licked it's wounds from the runners defeating it in 2025, it's back for more in 2026. Take on the rugged Vermont trails on this 6.4 mile course with three different race lengths of 30-hour, 12-hour, and 10K. The devil will be testing what you believe you are capable of on all distances.Race will cap at 100 runners total30-hour runners Who do not register by 9/1/2026 will not be guaranteed an event hoodie/shirt. NO REFUNDS The Course The Devil's Den Course is a 10K loop on Wright's Mountain located in Bradford Vermont. The course can be found at the following link: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-4de7542--63?u=i&sh=tndajdThe trail is a mix of easy runnable to steep, rocky and rooty. The beginning of the course is a steeper climb to the peak of Wright's Mountain. After reaching the peak, you will have a fun downhill through the woods before moving your way back through the woods to return to the start/finish area. There is one road crossing at the
beginning of the course and the loops starts on private property. Please do not visit the area of private property outside of the race and stay on the public trails for training. Tarot Cards and Awards Each runner will be given a upside down Devil Tarot card for finishing their race. There is one for the 10K, 12-hour, and 30-hour. For 30-hour and 12-hour, have the option to receive more cards for your "tarot reading". 12-Hour: All runners who finish will receive the devil tarot card and the runner with the top miles during the day (which the 12-hour is ran all throughout the day) will receive The Sun Tarot card. The 12-hour runners will all be given a place to store a drop bin. We cannot promise that this area will be able to get out of the elements, so come prepared. Please keep your drop bin to a smaller bin to leave room for all the runners. The 30-hour runners will be given a 10'X10' section that they will be able to set up their pit area. We do not care what you put in that 10'X10' section, just as long as you stay within that space. We want to make sure that everyone has enough room so please be courteous of your neighbors. to set up their tents in their space and any 12-hour runner that pre registers can leave their drop bin if they would like. We suggest doing this option if you can because race morning will be hectic and early if you need to check-in and setup on race day. The pre registration will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At 8:00:01 PM, registration will be closed and you will need to register in the morning. 30-hour runners are allowed to stay within their tents the night before the race after they have registered. For 12-hour runners, please check with local airBNB or campgrounds if you are coming up the night before. Please reach out to me if you have any issues finding a place to stay. trouble finding the funds, we are more than happy to work with everyone. Simply reach out and we are happy to discuss options that will work with your finances Event's current local time: 4:45 AM ET
About the event
A challenging half and full marathon distance trail run in the heart of the Green Mountains at beautiful Trapp Family Lodge. Fall is the best time to visit Vermont and we think that running through crisp, colorful, fall foliage on the Trapp Lodge trail system is just the way to do it. October is a particularly special time to be in Stowe, winter is just around the corner and Oktoberfest is in full swing in and around town.
About the course
This race will challenge you! Although Trapp lodge has some of the smoothest, most runnable trail around for running, they also boast some incredible single track. Steep climbs and descents and a newly updated climb to the highest point on the Trapp Lodge Property; Round Top Mountain! The 13.1 mile loop course is approximately 2/3 double track wide trails and dirt roads, and 1/3 serpentine, rugged single track. Full marathon racers will traverse this loop twice. This is a challenging trail race with significant elevation gain and loss and some steep scrambling segments.
Event's current local time: 4:49 AM ET
